I went to the Laundromat to wash some of my big items for the bed... the
front load model without the agitator in the middle seems to work better for
the thick bead spreads and all. I picked up a paper (don't read the paper
much but I'm looking for a new car so I picked it up) Sundays is the big
paper and they usually do something of great length to give life to a topic
of importance. This week it was about child drownings. Broke my heart.
This family gave permission not only to interview them but they had pictures
of the family at the funeral (just last month) and the child layed out in
the casket. A 20 month old little girl. As usual they really went over the
details in graphic illustration of her life and her death.
This is a big problem here in Arizona. We have laws in some cities that
state you must fence your pool if you have one. One of our smaller towns
fought the law recently saying it's against their constitutional rights to
force individuals to fence off their pools. Of course this is the town with
the highest rate of drownings. I just go nuts because people get pools and
don't fence the thing off... I get mad because I don't think child drownings
should happen (and every time they occur it's something that didn't need to
happen, it's almost always more than just having a child that wanders out)
but my heart went out to these people also. I can't imagine losing a child.
They gave permission to print all this hoping it reaches someone who either
didn't fence their pool or someone who has a door that won't latch, just
whatever the risk is. I felt bad when I told my own mother to fence her
pool or we wouldn't bring our daughter over. She insisted that she had
double latches on the door and never opened it up without locking it after.
She got so mad but we insisted and she relented. After reading this I'm
glad we did and I hope my mom is reading it also and is greatful she did it.
My heart just broke...

Having brought the kids up with respect for the water and taught to swim, I
have little fear for them (and the fact that they're so big now the water is
only chest height really helps!!) but now I have lots of visitors with
littlies - so I watch them all like hawks again.

I read more of the article... It's a very long one. These folks were at the
grandfather's house. Through the article they say...
the door kept being left open.
And the grandfather didn't have to have a gate or fence because he had no
littles. And they watched so carefully.
Just made me really upset because this is how it is. I got furious as a
matter of fact as I talked with my dh and he pointed out
to me that this is one of the really sad things that the family still has
not put afence up there at this pool and the g-father let it go (green
pool).
So it's not really a good piece of publicity either because the article is
stirring up more sentiment of saddness for the family than
it is making people aware. (although I disagreed with dh some on this... I
think that people may be paying attention also, it's just getting
to mixed up in the saddness for the family) I wouldn't go so far as to say
they are bad parents. I would just say judging them is not
the point...
Recently our Electric company had a campaign to have a card to give to the
designated "Watch" person. The person holding the card
is designated to watch with great vigilance whomever is in the pool for 10
minutes and then hand off the card to another "watcher".
We need this to be advocated stronger and louder.

other people's houses are just excruciating in that way (even when there's
no immediate danger, like your dad's pond.) none of my parents understand
why it makes me so tense to just be there (atm while my kids are still

When my son was little, my mom put all her breakables away, and let me
child-proof for her :-) He spent every Sat. night at her place as I was
working then, and she got weary of having to put everything away and put it
back after we left, lol.

That's one of the things that annoys me about staying at my MIL's
house. I told her the way we do things at home and what Drew tends
to do that he needs to be discouraged from (eg pulling CDs out and
chucking them over his shoulder) and she just told me that his
cousin doesn't do it so she doesn't think it will be a problem. She
still doesn't seem to understand that Drew and Lyarnie are two
completely different kids.

Mum to Drew (11 Mar 99) and Reece (4 Oct 00)
The weekend of July 7th, our neighbours had a party. Thomas was
playing at the pool (wading pool to my knees) and he went in Head
first. His legs were in the air, his head was under. All I saw was wet
red curls. I was stunned and yanked him out by his shirt. His waist
was on the edge of the pool. He was fine but mommy was a nut.

Before I got my job, Em and I were going to go down to Alabama to visit my
in-laws. Dh was going to stay here, as he has no available time off work.
My mil offered to drive up here to IN to get us, and take us back the next
day, then drive us home again when I was ready to come home...bless her
heart :)
At first, I was really excited about getting away for a few days or even a
week, and we made tentative plans, as I was waiting to hear about this job,
as well. The more I thought about visiting, however, the more I started to
dread the idea. Their home is very tastefully decorated with all manner of
little goodies and breakables *all over* the place. I knew I could take the
baby gates, but I didn't want to inconvenience everyone by having to step
over them all the time like we do around here. Not to mention, there isn't
one room in their house that doesn't have *tons* of things within reach of a
curious tot.
I started to feel like it wouldn't feel like a vacation to me at all, as I'd
have to be constantly vigilant about everything Em was near, and I knew I'd
be constantly telling her "No", and redirecting her *all* the time. I got
tired just at the thought, lol! I've met my in-laws one time last summer,
and just didn't feel comfortable asking them to practically rearrange
everything for our visit. There is a low bookshelf along the entire living
room wall, full of books and breakables. I couldn't imagine them having to
remove all that just for us.
When I got called that I got this job, I was actually relieved to not have
to go visit. Sounds terrible, doesn't it? The funny thing is, I've never
met dh's mom (his dad is divorced and remarried), but I don't feel as if I'd
have trouble asking her to put some things away.

Just last night we are at the pool. I have two kids and I'm supervising
mine and my friend has two kids and her MIL was with her. This girls son
goes in and is under water (1 year old) and we finally see him. It's too
easy. The stats (Another article in the paper monday) are that many kids
drown with people right there.

I felt it needed something, and on one of those afternoons when I was
supposed to be napping, I found a sharp object and added a little carving
here and there. Little people I could admire when ever I was in my room.
When mom came to get me up and saw what I had done, she freaked! Yelled for
my dad and told him to deal with me!
He did! He took me by the hand and led me to his and moms room. Their
furniture had been his when he was growing up......... and he pulled out the
chest of drawers from the wall........ and there on the side were creatures
who looked just like mine!
So there! MOM!

PS....... My third daughter has now christened the foot board of her

I think this is like the crayon marks on the wall thing, every child does
it. Every child thinks their artwork is extraordinary, and every child

You're brave, Christi. I don't know that I'm ready to do the crayons with
dd yet, after she decided to use her chalk all over the kitchen, LOL!

Hehe, Emily did that yesterday morning with her chalk. I finally got smart
and put it up out of her reach, and we take it *outside* to draw with. I
was sitting on the sidewalk drawing a smiley face for her when I look up,
and she's got bright pink all over her mouth, and I spy two little teeth
marks in the chalk. She's got her tongue hanging out, trying to wipe it off
with chalk covered fingers, saying "bleah, bleah, bleah"... Priceless :-)

oh boy... my walls have taken a beating. My dd also drew in a few pieces
of furniture and my white floor. I got it out of everything but a few
pieces of furniture and the floor. I was getting so frustrated because she
was good at finding pens no matter how hard I tried to hide them. Then I
went to my brother and sister in laws house and they had built frames around
the stuff their kids did on the walls and put up huge pieces of paper all
over the walls so that their little artists can have a go at it.
Hey did I get a great thing too... Rainbow Art. It's these spongy brushes
and paint on a little wheel that you can take water on the brush (you supply
it) and then brush it over the paint and it does the coolest stuff. Fun.
Anybody heard of this. At first it was only on T.V. but it's now in some
stores.
I'd say it's for kids 4 and on. I've watched my dd change in her skills
with this... She is quite creative and it's fun to see.

Apparently Drew tried to pick his nose with a green highlighter this
morning after drawing on his forehead for a bit first. I wasn't
