I'm interested in starting a bit of a collection for Pascal but I have no
idea what is out there. I vaguely remember seeing Dumbo when I was pretty
young but have hardly seen any animated films other than Toy Story.

What would you say are the 5 (or 10) best videos for kids under 5? I'm
thinking film type things rather than TV shows like Wiggles or Hi-5.

Emily loves Jungle Book - the original, she doesn't mind Jungle Book 2 but
prefers the original... It would be her all time favourite.. Wendy has
said some of the ones we have..
They also like Peter Pan, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Piglets Big Movie and
The Tigger Movie... They pretty much like most movies as long as they have
seen it 3 times, for some strange reason, they have to watch it 3 times
before they like it enough to talk about etc...

Not sure about under 5 exactly but:
Bedknobs and broomsticks; Mary Poppins; Jungle book versions; Shrek maybe a
little too old; Ice Age; Monsters Inc - maybe a bit scary;

I missed the OP but anyway :) .....
These are the DVD's and tapes that are requested by my 5 year old most often:

Snowman (a British animated short film, not frosty)
The Red Balloon
Yoga for Kids
The Fox and the Hound
The Secret of NIMH (I loved this book when I was a kid)
Lately my DD is very into 'The Munsters' and 'The Adams Family'
I would like to get some DVD's of the old Little Rascals, but they are hard to
find! :)

Aww, I love the Snowman - makes me all weepy. Its the one that katherine
summarised a couple of years ago by telling me 'its all about a 'nowman

you might want to preview *any* Disney movie with your kid's
quirks in mind before letting them watch. in the beginning of
Dumbo, for example, his mother is killed for acting to protect
Dumbo... the newer Disney movies (since Walt died) are way
more saccarine, but the older ones are truer to the original
stories, at least.
as far as videos, Boo has loved the I Love Toy Trains series
(they're up to around 14 now, plus 2 Christmas, a Big Trains &
a 'music' video). he also likes Phoebe's Farm (a farm tour
guided by an adorable 4 year old).
movies he likes are: Monsters, Inc., Nightmare Before
Christmas, & Chicken Run (but he finds parts of it scary). he
loves Wallace & Grommit.
he has Kipper, Bob the Builder & Thomas the Tank engine on
video (i dislike Thomas. it encourages his tendency to crash
his toys). we rarely watch tv.
i dislike Disney's (well, Eisner's) business practices, so we
don't have any Disney videos (i think NMBC, James & the Giant
Peach & Monster, Inc were distributed by Disney, but they
aren't Disney films).

In no order,

Shrek (bought it when testing TV screens when we wanted a new TV set)
Shrek 2 ( yet to be released on video/DVD cept our house :P )
Wiggles bay (got for birthday this year)
Wiggles (other) like yummy yummy, clock etc,
Cartoon things (like bugs bunny, daffy duck etc on DVD for $5 each at big w)
Finding nemo
Ice age
Bob the builder (was a faze)
Teletubbies (was a faze)
Hi 5
Play school
The Simpson's

The out list and never liked,
Arthur (on channel 2, he is a mouse)
Monster Inc (to scary)
Barbie of swan lake (or something like that)

I have to say most of the stuff my dd has watched or likes watching has to
be pretty exciting or fun to watch, or various noises/shapes etc otherwise
she will lose interest and complain it is boring.
Having said that she now loads and unloads her own DVD's into the machine
and knows how to play and stop them. (which is great as I don't have to sit
and watch the wiggles 50 times with her in a week, if she had her own way of
course which she doesn't)

(In no particular order)
1. Nemo
2. Toy Story
3. Babe (the pig)
4. Brave Little Toaster (my sister who just turned 4 is OBSESSED with this
movie!)
5. Rugrats Movies

She likes TV show movies a lot. The problem with most movies is that there
are a few scary parts that might throw them off like in Lion King, Snow
White, 101 Dalmatians, Nemo, etc. She enjoys watching 'Casper the Friendly
Ghost' movies which are NOT scary but I always wonder if she thinks about it
after the movie is over.

We have done a few that are a line called Feature Films for Families. They
are expensive but the young kiddo ones are really decent. Otherwise I liked
the Blue's Clues and that type... Dd learned alot from them.

Mine love Monsters, Inc. and there is only one scary part that I skip

We only have to skip one part in Shrek as well.

We have quite a few Disney movies but we have to skip parts in all of them.

Winnie the Pooh is good and no skipping parts required.

They also like Charlotte's Web.

I bought Sinbad recently (about 3 weeks ago) and I haven't watched it
because it starts out scarey for them and they request that I take it
out. Therefore, I have no idea if it's any good.

Anything Veggie Tales. Iron Giant, almost anything Disney, main exception
would be The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It shows the murder of Quasimodo's
mother and the attempted burning of a family's home with them still in it.
Hmmmm Let's see. DS's all time favorite movie is Godzilla. He would watch
it 5x a day sometimes. Bambi is one of his favorites.

I like to buy them used. The baby thrift shop (as i call it, but it's Once
Upon A Child) has them for 3.40 And i rent them free at the library, ours
has a HUGE selection and most rentals a for a week! Others we get as gifts.

DS is 3 and is watching a Thimas DVD right now. He loves:

There Goes a Train
Choo-Choo Trains: Up CLose and real persoanl (something like that)
Alphabet Train
I wanna be an engineer

(catching the theme yet??)

Great one's for the younger crowd are:
Alphabet Jungle
The Numbers Game
These are both Sesame Street and kids learn to count and learn the alphabet
from them

The Sesame Street tapes Silly Songs 1 & 2 were a ton of fun too. But that's
from TV - not what you wanted - sorry.

DS isn't into Disney films yet - except NEMO, loves Nemo! The others have
not held his attention, and he has a great attention span.

Maybe i will try watching one of the movies listed with him.

BTW - why does the mom always have to bite it in disney movies?

Hi!

My kids like the Winnie Pooh movies, and the Pippa Longstockings movies.
We had the latter from the library, and they still ask for them - two
months later!
We tested some others, but my son has scenes in them where he starts to
cry. So Shrek or Monsters,Inc. are out.

My DH also found a series called "Once upon a time there was man", in
German, obviously, don't know if there is an English version as well.
Quite short pieces, but my kids seem to like the first two or three parts.
But those are meant for older kids, so I guess they did not learn much out
of those.

Sometimes Bob the Builder or "Benjamin Bluemchen" (a German series about a
talking elephant living in a zoo with a human friend called Peter, a
series I know from my own childhood) are asked for, but not often.

Most questions I get is for Pippa Longstockings.

Bye from Hamburg,
Diana

I can't go for 5 - but we've recently discovered that ds (22m) loves The
Sound of Music....he loves the children, music, dancing, singing bicycles,
cars, water...you name it. When we've had it playing he stands there
absolutely entranced, apart from the odd occasion he takes himself off to
dance along with the children.

another video we've bought, but haven't shown him yet as he's too young, but
which we were both brought up on and loved, is Jungle Book

Piggybacking because I lost the OP.

I would look for things that are a bit different than the *movies*
I have seen though I loved the original Jungle Book and
some others like that.

Try Peter and the Wolf

http://www.sendit.com/video/item/7000000084554

or Fantasia

(Disney, but a wonderful film anyway)

http://disneyvideos.disney.go.com/moviefinder/products/1826803.html

How about this one:

My neighbor Totoro

http://www.greattapes.com/gt/product.phtml/totorod?16304018075610724698441482

Or

The NeverEnding Story:

or
The Emperor's New Clothes (Danny Kaye's version)

Or George Balanchine's Nutcracker

Actually this listing has many great ones:

My grandson loves a wonderfully animated Japanese
folk-tale movie called Totoro. He's lukewarm
about The Lion King. He does have lots of TV
videos of The Wiggles, Dora the Explorer, and
various Maisy Mouse videos.

At a very young age he began to enjoy the
Baby Einstein series and right now he's captivated
by a similar series called "Baby Gourmet" all about
food. He askes for "Baby Mor-gay" often. We find
that he also watches some of the very earliest videos
on a completely new level of understanding and
interest right now.

You might do well to rent a few to see what he likes.
Their taste and interest levels change so quickly and
so frequently it's hard to guess what he will like.

them really like Barbie Rapunzel even though it has dragons. Oh, the
oldest likes the Mouse King in Nutcracker Barbie, Tim Curry is an
_excellent_ villain ;) and the star game on the Swan Lake DVD.

I second the idea of going to the video store. What they like changes
so often it's cheaper to hire the weeklies. Mine have liked at
various times:
101 Dalmations (animated version)
101 Dalmations 2 - Spot's London Adventure (animated)
Stuart Little (known as Stupid Little for some reason)
Return to Never-neverland
Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius
All the Pixars (Toy Story 1&2, Bugs Life, Monster's Inc, Finding Nemo)
Antz
The Adventurers Downunder
Shrek (they are desperate for my birthday so we can go see Shrek 2)

There have been more, I just can't think of them now. The all time
favourite at the moment is episodes of Dora the Explorer that my
sister taped from Nick Jr (Foxtel).

My daughter loves any Elmo movie, Bear in the Big Blue House and Blue's
Clues. I have a few of each and they are great educational videos. She loves
them.
