I spent four hours this morning, digging up a stump in my yard. That SOB
was one tough motherfucker. I figured I burned 600 calories alone
attacking the stump with a pick axe, shovel and clippers. That damn
Asian Multiflora Rose bush had to go. It was time. After nine years of
constantly clipping it from overtaking my yard, I decided I was going to
win the war against this invasive bush once and for all.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosa_multiflora

I clipped the bush down to its bare stump. Four hours into fighting the
prickly plant and digging the stump out, a thought came to my mind:

"If more people did mindless, back breaking work, such as foolishly
removing a stump by hand, there would be less time for people to riot."

Yes. If more people got off their asses, turned off the television,
turned off their phones, turned off social media (but not Usenet, yup,
I'm not a hypocrite) and went outside and fought with nature, there
would be more physically fit people who would have less time to give a
shit about politics and other asinine human crap.

As I fought with the stump, I thought this is how one feels when they do
something worthwhile with his/her own hands. You feel satisfied. There
was no Covid-19 bullshit, no election bullshit, no BLM bullshit running
circles around in my mind. Only the stump, and its eventual demise.
Actually that was kind of a cool way to kill four hours of my boring life.

In the end the stump lost and was put to the curb with a shitload of
other garden clippings to be picked up by the town. Will the rose bush
come back next year? Probably. Never underestimate the power of stumps.
I may think I have won the war, but next year that damn rose bush may
come back with a vengeance ready for war once again.

Ehh.. .maybe I will be dead by then and in the end none of this will matter.

That stump stumped your mind from thinking about politicians stumping
for elected positions where they can sit there like a stump and do nothing.

Too many humans underestimate the power of stumps.
