I have been gone awhile...off of Usenet. I am guessing about 9 years.
Last week I thought to my pathetic self "I wonder if I can still access
Usenet through my ISP?"
I gave it a try, and wouldn't you know, I still have access to Usenet
through my ISP (for now, could change any day). Then I thought to my
pathetic self "Why bother with Usenet? The world has moved on from text
based free speech, to moderated, censored forums where one can post oh
so funny memes and ugly avatars. Twitter, Facebook and Reddit are the
big players in 2020. The whole "get out of my treehouse, won't you sign
my yearbook" mentality rules the online and offline world. The average
human is not going to read some boring text on an unmoderated spam
filled newsgroup, that is why newspapers went out of business, too much
reading of words and ads.
Lately, on Youtube, Bitchute, Reddit, in the comments, people have been
bemoaning how there is no free speech anymore and too much censorship.
Youtube is being especially bitchy lately and banning people for having
opposing points of view from Youtube's leftist agenda. No surprise
there, Youtube has always been bitchy.
Then I thought to my pathetic self, why don't the people complaining
about being censored and banned from various online forums go someplace
else . . . perhaps to a mostly unmoderated place -- Usenet anyone? Ah,
but then they wouldn't have their memes, their selfies, their inline
video links, their likes, their karma, etc. You get tradeoffs, if you
want to act like a 14 year old girl, post trout faced selfies and trade
likes and posts to stroke your ego, then you have to obey your parents
and accept the censorship and moderation of places like Youtube,
Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, etc.
If you are an adult and can handle criticism and are not triggered by
opposing opinions and spam, oh...and you kind of like free speech than
perhaps Usenet is where you should be.
Of course in 2020, besides the binary groups, Usenet is basically dead
for text based posts/conversations. That is a big minus. Hell,
alt.misanthropy has never been very active, even in Usenet's heyday in
the 1990's. Now it is completely dead except for my BS ramblings to
myself. But maybe it is time for Usenet to make a comeback. Make a
splash for the new generations who have never heard of it.
Or maybe not.
However, I have this gut feeling that Usenet will be part of the
underground free speech movement that is coming in the near future. Mark
my words.
Or maybe not.
