Harry,
Perhaps you don't use catalytic converters on your cars to reduce smog
in the UK. However, many countries do. Without the platinum in the
catalysts, the smog might injure your beloved bugs and bunnies. It
certainly isn't good for people. Even if you don't use catalytic
converters, many products that you depend on require platinum-family metals.
Without platinum, you probably wouldn't have your computer and the internet
to transmit your concerns. Isn't it being a little hypocritical to complain
about a mine in your backyard while you take advantage of the technology
afforded by the output of that mine? You talk as though the "international
mining company" is doing this outside the economic system and are somehow
going to make a profit without contributing anything to society. Now if
these were extraterrestrials coming to Earth to steal water or babies, I
could understand your concern. However, the only reason that the
"international mining company" is able to potentially make a profit is
because there is a need and demand for what they intend to mine.
Do you have a particular specie that is endemic to the area of the
proposed mine, or are you just exaggerating for the sake of soliciting
sympathy from non-thinking readers?

a small part of the SW of England. A large international mining company
claims to have found platinum in the UK and in their quest for money are
going to extinquish at least 1 species from our planet. Butterflies, birds,
small mammals, fish and even some plants are at risk from extinction if this
corporate monster is not stopped.
