Crap - My 5D died right before my "once in a lifetime" vacation to
Ireland. I just got back and now have to figure out how to get the
camera to Sony for warranty repair.

The camera makes a buzzing noise when it's switched on for about 5
seconds, with a slight vibration. I suspect something is jammed
internally. After that I get good displays on the LCD, and it seems to
auto-focus, but it will not shoot. I tried resetting the camera to
factory settings, but it does not help. I get the same sound with any
lens, or with no lens at all.

Has anyone else run into this? I'm really disappointed, but at least I
still have a month left on the warranty!

Mike,

This happened to my 7D, and I went through the support website to get
it sent in for repairs. It was promptly fixed and returned in good
working condition.

Just got the camera back from Sony. It seems to work now. Apparantly
the Image Stabilizer quit working.

They claim to have upgraded my software as well, but are not specific
about what was changed or fixed. I'll let you know if I see any
differences.

You are very lucky, mine went down at the beginning of a journey across
the Baltic (Russia Estonia, Poland Scandinavia), I was really p*ssed
off. The camera had to go to Sony in Germany and I didn't get it back
until 15 weeks had passed.

I asked around in the UK for a name to complain to and was told I should
consider 15 weeks as good for Sony.

Ahoy!

It sounds like the SSS motor may have died. Turn it off and re-start the camera. Does it work now or not? also, is the first frame taken 'black'? I would suggest you go to www.dyxum.com and read
the threads about the First Frame Black (FFB) issue and the camera in general. Also, there's a K-M website that covers the Dynax 5D, though it's no longer supported by Sony and there are very few
parts available in order to get it repaired, so it won't make economic sense to have it repaired. You would be better off buying an A700 if you want to upgrade the camera and maintain the OVF system
as opposed to SLT.
