Marine Corp Vows To Fight San Diego Base Closures

(EXCERPT) U.S. Marine Corps bases in San Diego should not be closed
despite Pentagon (news - web sites) promises to shutter a quarter of
U.S. military installations worldwide, said the nation's top Marine
officer.
Speaking to San Diego business leaders Tuesday morning, Marine
Commandant Gen. James L. Jones said the Navy and Marines consolidated
as much as possible during the last round of base closures.
To consolidate further, as mandated by the Department of Defense (news
- web sites) almost two weeks ago, "is risky business and should be
resisted as much as we can," he said.
