Did some pricing on what few meds I need. Right now, I am on a pain
killer and antibiotics.

Since they are from a Dentist under Delta, the VA wouldn't issue meds.
Even if they did, it would have still been the customary 8 bucks.

I priced them at Walgreens (they don't accept tricare) and the price for
generics was right around 30 bucks apiece.

Went to Safeway, without tricare, the antibiotics were only 13 bucks.
But after I filed with them for Tricare, the pain killers were less than
4 bucks.

I realize that some meds is better to go with the VA since the generic
may not be an option but it looks like, for generics, safeway is the one
to go to .

Guess it pays to shop around.

It sure does. I have a physical coming up soon and since Tricare/Express
Scripts covers smoking cessation meds that will be topic 1-and assorted
aches & pains.

If you are a military retiree you can receive formulary medications on base for $0 even with a civilian script. Unfortunately VA will not accept civilian prescriptions. Although VA does not accept civilian prescriptions at their pharmacy if you are eligible and enrolled in VA you can set up an appointment with a VA primary care manager, show him the script and more likely than not he will write up a new script. Of course if you are 100% rated you can use VA dental and receive the medication at no cost as well.
