I served in both. . . US NAVY and the US AIR FORCE. . . . . 1950 -
1971.....retired

SOS = S#@t On a Shingle. . . . .i.e. GROUND Beef (hamburger) in a sauce
on a slice of toast.....

The previous response ALL relate to SOS.html . . . . . .

CHIPPED BEEF ON TOAST as we called it aboard ship .....CREAMED
FORESKINS' ON TOAST

Is thinly sliced cured beef..........is made with a WHITE sauce......there
are NO tomatoes involved........

The WHITE sauce is similar to "Biscuits and Gravy"........ I guess is made
with Flour. . . .

I too, would like to have the recipe for the real chipped beef on toast. . .
. . NOT SOS

I think we all called it S.O.S in the old day while in the service. ;)
Even my dad did when he was in.

I asked the original question several years ago. . . . never got an answer.
. .

only references to S O S which were of no help . . . .

S O S Sh*t on a Shingle . . . . was made of ground beef. . . .and

Was served in ARMY and AIR FORCE mess facilities. . . . .as Breakfast fare.
. .

Creamed Chipped Beef was served aboard the NAVY ships I served on,

as a Breakfast meal, we jokingly called it "Creamed Foreskins on Toast"

It was made of thinly sliced and dried / frozen Beef with a White sauce. . .

NOT ground beef.. or. hamburger. . .

There is a frozen product by "Stauffer's" named Creamed Chip Beef which

is a reasonable / edible facsimile . . . . I was looking for the real Navy
recipe

The modern Navy probably has S O S on the menu now. . . . .

In da OLD NAVY we had dungarees, and white hats

Beans, Bacon and Corn Bread for Saturday Breakfast. . . . .

US Navy 1950 - 1954 . . . Amphibian Forces Pacific PhibPac (Korea)

Us Air Force 1955 - 1971 . . . MATS- MAC- now AMC

Korea - Viet Nam Veteran and all in between . . . .

Here you go:

Ingredients:

2 (2 1/2-ounce) jars sliced dried beef, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
2 tablespoons of butter
2 tablespoons of flour
1/4 teaspoon of onion powder
1/4 teaspoon of pepper
1 cup of whole milk
1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
4 slices of toasted white bread; cut in half diagonally

Directions:

Place the beef in a medium bowl and add enough warm water to cover all the pieces.
Soak the beef for 2 minutes then drain and rinse the beef well.
In a medium sized frying pan combine the beef, butter, flour and the dry seasonings over a medium heat.
Cook the mixture until the butter melts and make sure you stir the cream for the chipped beef through the cooking period.
Once the butter is melted add in the milk and the Worcestershire sauce and stir into the beef mixture until all is mixed well.
Bring the pan's contents to a boil and cook for an additional 2-4 minutes stirring constantly until the sauce has thickened.
Turn the heat off and spoon the creamed chipped beef over all the toast points and sever immediately while it is hot.
Enjoy!
