A troubling trend
These three children, whose families were investigated by the Rowan
County Department of Social Services, have died in the past six months.
BUDDE LEE CLARK
AGE: 6
HOMETOWN: Cleveland, N.C.
DSS INVOLVEMENT: Social workers substantiated a medical neglect case
involving Budde and monitored his doctor's visits for a nasal problem
for six months. His case was closed Dec. 5, 1996.
DIED: Jan. 31. His bruised body was found by rescue workers in a bathtub
in his home. His stepmother, Robin Gosnell, 39, also known as Elizabeth
Magdalene Craig Clark, has been charged with first-degree
murder.
TROLA MILLER
AGE: 16
HOMETOWN: Salisbury
DSS INVOLVEMENT: Entered foster care May 23, 1994, because no one in her
family was capable of raising her, according to DSS. She ran away from a
group home in May 1996, according to the DSS director.
DIED: Feb. 4 at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem of gunshot
wounds. Elizabeth White, 20, of Salisbury has been charged with murder.
DEMALLON EL-JUHNN KRIDER
AGE: 2
HOMETOWN: Salisbury
DSS INVOLVEMENT: Placed in foster care five days after his birth in
Raleigh because his mother, Tamanchies Krider, 27, was a prisoner at
N.C. Women's Correctional Center. Krider was released in September and
regained custody of DeMallon on May 7. The emergency room at Rowan
Regional called DSS to report a
suspicion of abuse or neglect when Krider brought DeMallon in June 9
with bruises and bite marks. DSS did not go to the hospital, but sent
social workers to the home the next day to investigate.
DIED: June 15 of head injuries. His mother has been charged with murder.
