Bitter Boy in Greece Gets Prison Term Reduced for Murdering Woman

THESSALONIKI, Greece - A Greek seaman convicted of the murder and
mutilation of his New Jersey girlfriend saw his prison term reduced to
23 years by a Greek court Tuesday.
George Skiadopoulos was convicted three years ago for the premeditated
murder on Jan. 8, 1999 of Julie Scully of Mansfield, a 31-year-old
former model.
Scully's mutilated body was found burnt and beheaded.
The reduced sentence gives Skiadopoulos the right to apply for early
release in as little as five years.
Skiadopoulos, who was sentenced in 1999 to life in prison without
possibility of parole, claimed his actions were not premeditated but
the result of "jealous rage," because Scully had wanted to leave him.
Scully, a former legal secretary, was known in the Trenton area as a
"Page Six" pinup model for The Trentonian newspaper. Her photo
appeared on billboards promoting the newspaper, and she also did
promotional work for beer companies.
Police said Skiadopoulos strangled Scully in a car along a muddy farm
road just outside the northern town of Kavala. Skiadopoulos then
doused her with gasoline and set the body ablaze.
He said he put her remains in a suitcase and used a hacksaw to cut off
her head so it would fit inside.
Skiadopoulos then dumped the suitcase into a swamp before driving
about six miles west of the town and throwing her head into the water.
It was never found.
During Tuesday's trial, Skiadopoulos told the court: "I was in a haze
when she said she would leave me. I had planned my life with her. It
was a moment of intense passion."
The court recognized his remorse and noted his lack of prior
convictions.
The one-day appeal trial was heard at a court in Komotini, about 500
miles northeast of Athens.
Timothy Nist, Scully's former husband and father of their young
daughter, testified Tuesday.
He told reporters before the verdict: "He must be punished. We lost
our Julie."
Nist left the courtroom without making any comment after the verdict
was announced.
Skiadopoulos, now 28, was a petty officer on a cruise ship when he met
Scully on a Caribbean voyage in 1997. She moved to Greece in 1998.
Skiadopoulos' lawyer, Dimitris Tsakos, indicated he would take the
appeal to Greece's Supreme Court.
"The court has ruled and its decision is just, but we will examine our
legal options to challenge it," he said.
