massage therapy as home occupation

client who has fibromyalgia, so I thought someone here might be able to
help me. I'm a visually impaired massage therapist and I recently moved
to Port Huron, Michigan. I had hoped to be able to see clients in my
home, but the city has not given me a special use permit. What I REALLY
need are examples of ordinances in places where massage therapist can
and do work out of their homes. The Planning Commission here is looking
at the ordinance to see if it needs to be clarified and updated. If
anyone here has any leads on how I can find ordinance info that relates
to this subject in other places, please e-mail me at

home LEGALLY.

Hi Vicki,
One of my best friends has been a certified massage therapist for over
20 years, and has served as the President of the Massage Therapy
Association for our province, and she has operated out of her home for
at least the past 15 years. She also has a practice in a health spa,
and teaches at the local community college.
There are certain requirements to her working our of her home, of
course, as there are with any home business in any city (I assume.) I
can't find a website for them, but I did do a search and found you the
American Massage Therapists' Association Code Of Ethics:

I found many different websites relating to Massage Therapist's Policy
and none of them state that you cannot operate out of a private
residence. Most say, basically, that you must provide a professional
environment that is safe and within health requirements for your area.

I also found an article dated March 2000 about a Bill that has been
passed in the House regarding The State Of Michigan's Massage Therapy
Associations -- Bill 5124. This article comes from the American Medical
Massage Association, who are very concerned about this Bill passing with
its present wording. I don't know if this issue has been settled
already or not, but it's probably pertinent to your situation. The
Bill identifies professional massage therapy with prostitution. they
recommend contacting the Senators on the judiciary committee and this
hyperlink has the senators' addresses and e-mail addresses.

Yes, I can do that if she wants me to, Rian. I also e-mailed my post to
her, and if she needs more help, she's WELCOME to come to my in-box or
whatever. The sites are quite long and she may not want ALL the info.
I also don't know how much visual impairment is involved, so I didn't
want to overstep my bounds. But I'm happy to help in whatever way works
best for those who need it.
