Does anybody else here take Zanaflex. Just wondering if you hallucinate
(sp?) when you take this? I often have this happen and last night and early
this am was rather dramatic. I was hearing a radio, seeing TV on and it
wasn't on, seeing people in the bedroom and other wierd things. Is this a
danger signal. Excuse if this is a stupid question but I really don't know.
Had this happen when I was on a morphine drip in the hospital too. They are
not even similar drugs. Also experienced it with codeine. Is this
dangerous aside from falling and hurting myself?

Actually Nettie,
This is what was happening to me when I was on
the Amitriptyline. I took 75 mg per night, and it happened for a
week, finally I told the doc forget it..........plus I gained about 13
lbs.on it. I am on Paxil now and only 20 mg. per night, it helps me
alot actually..........no side effects so far, except that for the
past 3 days I've been taking the generic brand. Pharmacy just changed
it on me..........Paroxetine I think it's called........and I've been
crying every night since...........and am fine by the next day till
about an hr. after I take it at night again. Personally, I think it's
too much stress and is freaky having hallucinations like
that........I'd go back to the doc for a change of Rx

it looks like hallucinations are a known (uncommon) side effect of this
drug. i would call your doctor as soon as you can to tell them about it, as
they may want to discontinue the medication.

be safe...

I don't know what else to try because it is a muscle relaxer and I have
restless leg which keeps me moving all night long. I have tried so many
different things. I feel like I am caught between a rock and a hard place.
Last night though was like the outer limits/twilight zone.

I hate if this is going on b/c while it might be a little of that depends on
the person thing..this is a good med.
I was given Flexeril and I can't really see where it does squat! But know
some have had great help from it! I know I shouldn't have but while trying
to give Rick some relief before the doctor diagnosed with fibro. I gave him
the flexeril off and on. He swears it did nothing for him. The boy could
actually walk about fine taking a dose that makes me sit and sleep!
When told this was fibro. the doctor put him on Zanaflex. Gave him 4mg.
pills and told me to start him at ½ a pill at bedtime. I did and while it
did relax it didn't help with his sleeping which was what we were trying to
do. So like the doc said, I upped him to a pill every night before bed. This
definitely knocked him out and he had no trouble with waking up during the
night! He didn't like the strong zombie feeling and neither did I for him!
So I started giving him 3/4 a pill at night about a hour before bed.
At this dose he is sleeping through the night and in turn feels better in
the morning to start the day.
Remember he is only 16 but the doctor told me when he first wrote the rx
to watch if he had any of the side effects to much or questioned things
being around him(to me the same you are saying) to cut back on the dose!
Of course there are other meds. out there that are relaxers but I would
almost try the cutting back before switching. You might do fine on something
else but not knowing if another med. would work as well on you......

Well that is just it Melissa. How much med changing can we do? Your body
gets used to one thing and changing meds can send you into a tailspin.
Urgh.

I use to take it but it zoinked me out!!! I would wake up 5 hours or so
after taking it, and not know where I was or what time it was,
anything........and I only took a quarter of the darn pill. I did get use to
it after a while, but was still very sleepy, so I stopped taking it because
I could not function during the day. I would hear and see things while on
it, sometimes very strange things.......

Also I would have to have blood work done every 3 months to check my liver,
so I opted to take Soma, and it does help.

Allison, Are you saying to check the liver b/c of the Zanzflex? I'll have to
check that one. Something new to me I have never heard for this med. Plus,
year back around 1995 when I was taking they never did the blood work and
they don't on Rick.

So you get the strangeness from it too. I only take it at night. The other
night though was the biggest trip I have ever taken. Way out of my head. I
have to have blood work done every 6 weeks anyway being on Methotrexate for
RA so no biggy for me. My girlfriend's husband takes it during the day too
and doesn't even feel the effects. I cannot even imagine that.

I have not heard of this but like I said, I have blood work done every 6
weeks anyway so perhaps they feel I am covered.
How does Rick handle Zanaflex? Just falls asleep? Has he had any unusual
"out of body" experiences? Pick his brains and see ok?

Oh, oh, I gotta tell this one. The funniest part was when I was sitting in
the living room in my chair at 5:00 am and Ed walked past me. It looked
like he was carrying red and yellow balloons. He walked into the kitchen
and I asked him what he was going to do with those balloons. He very calmly
said, Jeannette, I don't have any balloons!!! ROTFLMAO

Melissa, there are a few special warnings about zanaflex and one of them
states zanaflex has been known to cause liver injury in a few patients.

It can also cause low blood pressure and should be used with caution if one is
taking blood pressure medication.

If one has a kidney condition this requires a lower dose to be used.

There is no documentation of zanaflex causing hallucinations.

Nettie, even in the special warnings section in the PDR there is no
documentation regarding zanaflex causing hallucinations.

Check your other medications.

There are several online PDR's
(physicians desk reference) which is used by doctors when prescribing
medications.

You can look up each and every medication you are taking in the PDR.

When you are on a combination of medicatiions your doctor and or your
pharmacist should know if any combined medications would cause you to have
hallucinations.

Good luck

Well, maybe then it is a combination. I am doing better now. It could have
been fever as well since I had that bad infection. Usually I just see
pretty colors but the other night was sur-real!! Now I can laugh about it.

interesting. i wonder where the online pharmacies get their info? i've
found several that mention hallucinations.

http://www.consumer-rx.com/_buy_Zanaflex.html, for example.

i know they're not the first choice for information, but it's weird that
they would say it's a side effect.

Kelly, that *is* interesting.

The consumer-rx.com lists hallucinations as a side effect.

It's not listed as a side effect in the PDR.

How strange ...

Thanks Kelly, I will save the link.

Hi Nettie.

I take Zanaflex at night. Sometimes I get what I have thought might be panic
attacks within about 30 minutes of taking it. I see things that are not there.
It is better if I take Ambien, 10 mgs at the same time, then I go into a good
sleep and don't have the "visions." Also, I sometimes get what feels like
postural hypotension.

Hmmm.... What is postural hypotension? I would call what you describe also
hallucinations too. This must be a common denominator with that medication.
Now there are at least there of us reporting this. Last night I took it and
just got sleepy and went to bed ... no problems. Other nights are the same.
Just some nights I wierd out with it. Don't know why sometimes and not
other times. Thanks Dru.

Yes, I also hallucinate with my zanaflex. Even though I take it right at
bedtime; I often wake up like three hours later to find myself in a totally
different room. Most often it is a young boys room with sports memorbolia from
wall to ceiling. If I only take one zanaflex instead of two, The
hallucinations are not nearly as frequent.

I took Zanaflex 4mg tid for a long time. Never hallucinated. It helped me
sleep at first, but then I developed a tolerance to it.
I also take a lot of other meds. Can you try another muscle relaxer? Soma,
Flexeril, Baclofen, Norflex, Robaxin or Skelaxin.

all or most medications are processed through the liver, so it stands to reason
that if a person has a pre-existing liver condition or takes high doses of a med
and/or see # 3 below, they're in for trouble.

have a look at www.rxlist.com coz I don't know..keyword hypotension or medication
conflict section ??

>
> If one has a kidney condition this requires a lower dose to be used.

http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/tizanidine_wcp.htm
Hallucinations/Psychotic-Like Symptoms
Tizanidine use has been associated with hallucinations. Formed, visual
hallucinations or delusions have been reported in 5 of 170 patients (3%) in two
North American controlled clinical studies. These 5 cases occurred within the
first 6 weeks. Most of the patients were aware that the events were unreal. One
patient developed psychoses in association with the hallucinations. One patient
among these 5 continued to have problems for at least 2 weeks following
discontinuation of tizanidine.[]

What does that mean?
165 patients had no hallucinations.

What questions should be asked?
1) dose?
2) person previously cleared of psychotic problems ?
3) any of # 1 , # 2 and other med/alcohol/drug combinations.
