Eric McDonald was, up until about a year or so ago, a pretty regular
poster on the Usenet, particularly on ame and me-s.

I'm sorry to report that Eric was killed (off duty) in an automobile
crash in rural Minnesota a couple days ago.

The obit is at:

http://www.legacy.com/startribune/LegacySubPage2.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=456234

if that doesn't work, try http://startribune.com and check the
obituaries.

Funeral is 8/24 at 1pm in Anoka MN.

He was an EMT/Dispatcher for HealthEast Transportation (a local
private ambulance service, doing transfers and suburban 911 for some
St. Paul suburbs), and a paramedic student.

Very sorry to hear that, Bob. Was he a personal friend?

I knew the name was familiar, but couldn't quite place it. Then I did
a google search for his posts, saw the tag line he used, and
remembered him immediately:

His AOL web page is still active, btw....

Yes, and a bio with pictures is at:

http://members.aol.com/LCFDFireChief/eric.htm

Seemed like a very nice lad.

FYI: There is an on-line obit and Guest Book at:

Quite likely his family would find it nice to read a few kind words from
those who knew him (albeit in a virtual sense) via the newsgroups.

No. I'd met him a couple times. Mostly knew him via email (besides his
Usenet postings, he'd contact me by email regarding local EMS stuff).

I was anticipating meeting him in person soon (he was a paramedic
student, about to start clinicals, some of them at my department).

He was also well known to several of our new hires (who had worked
with him at HealthEast, or dealth with him through the medic program
(they were in class ahead of him).

Funeral was this afternoon. We sent a truck (and 2 of us from the
soon-to-be functional honor guard). Our department also had several
others attend (the new people I mentioned).

Century College's paramedic program was out in force (in uniform as
well), both his class and the new class that's just starting. I gather
HealthEast didn't accept any scheduled transfers this afternoon, and
had mutual aid backup, as all but 1or2 of their trucks were there, as
well as the bulk of their staff. All the other local EMS agencies sent
trucks, as well as a couple fire departments and one of the local PDs
(they have police medics). All told, I suppose there were probably 150
EMS personnel and 15 or so ambulances, plus the police and a couple
fire trucks.

In addition, the Minnesota Army National Guard sent an honor guard and
Rifle Detail (he was a member of the 34th Infantry Division
IIRC...might've been a vet from there instead though).

A touching sight, not seen for EMS funerals (especially non-LOD)
around here until very recently. Family was amazed and impressed.

I'm afraid I'm not sure of the details, except that it was a car crash
in rural Minnesota, while he was off-duty.

No other details that I've found so far (figures, the metro papers
carry stories of almost all fatal crashes in the state. The one time I
actually care about it, no story).
