The toxins associated with hair dyes do not leave the body, as I
understand it. They make their way to the liver and just stay there.
They may not be a facor in your present illness, but they can lead to
other problems later.

Toxins are excreted from the body through a number of systems...liver,
kidneys, lymph, skin, breath. You can help your body excrete toxins by

* not adding to the load (cut out artificial flavorings, aspartame, sugar,
smoking, etc.)
Also filter your water and try to get air filter. It's not just your hair
dyes in your body but the accumulatoin of petroleum fumes, formadadhyde,
pesticides, chlorine...thousands of traces of chemicals. Remove toxic
cleaning products from your home. Use safer laundry soaps and shampoos. GET
RID OF ALL PERFUMES!! And of course the aspartame/msg.

* Take some liver enhancing supplements. Milk thistle herb is a well
recognized liver herb that helps with detox. Niacin helps move the toxins
from the fat cells to the bloodstream for elimination. Anti-oxident
supplements such as vit. e, c, coenzyme Q10, also help. There is a
supplement collection called UltraClear that some find beneficial...but for
some it backfires.

* figure out a way to increase lymphatic circulation. Those mini-trampolines
are often used. Pumping your upper arms back and forth, deep knee bends,
swinging on a swing will also help. (I realize you might get dizzy or can't
exercise.) Some massage therapists specialize in lymphatic massage. You
might be able to find a chart of how to massage your own lymph system to
help move things around. DRINK MORE WATER to help the lymph fluid flow...for
most of us, it's sticky.

* Sign up for a series of colon hydrotherapy sessions. There is a licensing
organization for this, but not all therapists belong. Ask... This might be
the simplist thing for you to do because there would be no chemicals or
herbs to interact with your already sensitive system.

* Do an herbal cleanse. There are many prepackaged kits at health food
stores (cost about $25 for a month). This will include products such as
bulking agents (psyllium seeds), a laxative (cascera segreda-sp? is
typical), liver enhancers (milk thistle, dandelion), a chlorophyl product
(green algae perhaps), something to cut through mucus, a detoxifier
(charcoal...will also absorb beneficial minerals, so use sparingly), some
sort of clay to pull out toxins. The stories about cleansing can be sort of
funny. A great book as an introducion is "The Herb Lady's Notebook" by Venus
Andrecht, Ransom Hill Press, 800-423-0620. You will laugh the toxins from
your body reading this, and she gives a good sense of how to approach using
herbs.b An herbal program that has a lot of "buzz" around it is the
Clean-Me-Out program by Richard Anderson. He has a little purple book titled
Cleanse and Purify Thyself...lots of incredible testimonials in the book.
From my research--interviews with gastroenterologists and a cornoner--the
"thick mucoid fecal layers" mentioned in this book (and many other colon
cleansing booklets) is not there upon surgical or endoscopic or autopsy
examination. And these folks have been through a lot of guts! the only
explanation I could come up with for the prodigious amount of material
passed on these cleanses is: backup of current stools, the herbs pull toxins
from the body which is passed through the colon, the herbs react in some way
with the normal mucus layer to give the rubbery black tubes (passed on
Anderson's protocol). Or, perhaps it's magic!!!

* Detox saunas...You may not be able to stand the heat because of blood
pressure problems. A detox sauna heat is lower than a recreatoinal sauna
temp. I've heard stories of orange chemicals being excreted (a man with
metal acid exposure), "black goo through the soles of my feet" from a GWS
vet. to make these sauna program work, the clinics have the patient receive
a brief massage, do a little exercise, take some niacin, into the sauna,
take a shower...and start all over again. Minerals are supplemented to
replace those that are sweated out.

* DRINK MORE WATER...CLEAN CLEAR WATER...DRINK MORE WATER...

* Digestive enzymes help, also. Try to go for the vegetable based ones. What
isn't used digesting your food can be absorbed by the bloodstream and do
metabolic work in the body (eliminating old protein molecules, etc.) To do
real therapeutic enzyme work, you will probably have to work with a
naturopath. Many chiropractors also specialize in this. Many many brands are
out there. Search DejaNews at http://www.dejanews.com and search for
"digestive Enzymes"...you'll find lots of links to testimonials and you can
get a sense if something will work for you.

* Note: you may have reactions (headaches, runny nose, skin breakout) if the
chemicals are loosened to go through your bloodstream again and you dont'
move them all the way out quickly. Is your liver up to it? Also, some of
those herbs may loosen up worms and other nasties. stories of worms coming
out ears, nose, EYES! Gross! But of course, you'll be so excited you'll tell
all your friends!

* Join one of the multiple chemical sensitivities mailing lists. They can
help answer your questions (like there is another supplement--NAC?--that is
good for detoxing, but I forgot what it is).

I like this one. You'll find some great people here, many self-made
biochemists!

Gee Whiz,
I didn't even think about the toxins in hair color. I just couldn't get
myself up to something I didn't have to do. By the time the color sets
usually 20 minutes i am so wasted that it just didn't seem worth it to me
anymore. Like you My hair is mousy brown with a lot more white and grey
then I remember.
But I am learning to adjust. I haven't colored my hair since June and the
roots are now pretty long. I've decided to get it cut since it's falling
out anyway and adjusting as best I can with the new color. I'm hoping it
won't look so bad when it's mostly one color.

Six months ago, I stopped coloring my hair (semi-permanent hair color) for
the first time in 15 years. I had never noticed feeling worse after
coloring my hair. I had never noticed feeling better just prior to
coloring my hair (5-6 weeks after the last time). But I decided that I
should stop because I've been sick with this DD for 5 years and thought
that I must been nuts to willingly putting toxins in my system when I've
been walking around feeling so sick...

Well, 6 months later, I don't notice any difference... except I've been
going through a "bad hair YEAR"... This illness has done enough to kill my
self-image without this! So now I'm thinking of going back to coloring my
hair. I can't do much about the weight gain, or my new limitations and
symptoms -- but I *can* do something about ugly moussy brown hair with lots
of grey.

Does anyone know how long it takes for toxins to leave the body? I'm
wondering if 6 months is enough of a test. I don't really think that
coloring my hair was a problem, but since I've come this far in my
experiment, I don't want to invalidate it by going back to coloring it too
soon.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks,
Diane

Be very careful with hair dye - I went very close to a major relapse after
colouring my hair last year. It took me a month to recover to my previous
state of health (and that was using loads of antioxidants and herbal liver
tonics). The chemicals in hair dye are absorbed through the skin and have
to be detoxified by the liver. Now since 'detoxification' appears to be a
real problem for a number of us, using these kinds of chemicals is not a
great idea.

Tim.

Toxins cane take a long time. Try Milk Thistle extract, follow instrs. on
bottle. Also LOTS of water!!!!!
You might consider Henna for your hair. I know I hat emy grey and I am
switfhing to henna, as it is plant based, no chemicals, completely
natural, can do it yourself at home, and not expensive. I have been
coloring for years, don't want the chemicals, but don''t want the grey
either. Makes be look horrible!
Good luck,

Hi Diane and Claire,

I know that there is a school of thought that hair color exacerbates
the symptoms of CFIDS. BUT, I have not found it so for me. In fact, a
very short time after I developed the symptoms of CFIDs, my salt and
pepper hair suddenly turned completely silver. I was not ready for this!
I looked so pale and sick anyway, and the grey hair made me look even
more pale. It was very depressing! So, now I visit my hairdresser every
7 weeks, have my hair cut to about 2 inches, and colored my former
color. I sit there, feel pampered, and come out feeling a lot younger. I
may be fatigued, I may have pain, but my mental health is important too!
I am depressed by the 60 pounds I have put on with this DD - I feel very
fat, but I don't need to feel old and fat! I think it would have to be
proven to me that my health is adversely affected by hair color before I
would even think of stopping!

Just my feelings!

Sandy
