Hi all,

I don't know if this is allergy related......

At night ONLY when trying to fall asleep I get itchy. It goes something like
this...My cheek will tickle then I scratch it, then a spot on my leg, then
somewhere else and it keeps going on and on to different places. The itch
does get relieved by scratching but pops up like I said in a different area.

There was a time where I would end up changing the sheet and it would stop.
This isn't working anymore. Then I tried putting a clean sheet between
myself and the blanket that worked for awhile..not anymore. My latest trick
was to take off my pajama shirt and sleep without one. That too has stopped
working. This problem isn't everynight but is becoming more often. Last
night was very bad..only got a few hrs of sleep.

Thanks for any info

Yup I have a dog and he sleeps in my bed. He is non shedding coat wise and
we don't have fleas in my part of the country. I have thought about mites
though..with the dog added to the bed you would think there would be even
more mites. Assuming of course that dogs, like humans have mites crawling
over all over us. From what I've read on the internet you wouldn't be able
to feel mites crawling on you though.

Why don't you try smothering yourself in dry-skin lotion for a couple
of days, just to see what happens. Sometimes I get itchy areas on my
legs that are so bad that they wake me up at night. Awful. A couple
of days of applying moisturizer --lots of it-- usually straightens me
out for several weeks.

Something else: Changes in humidity can cause apparently random
itching by making little hairs change shape and length as they dry out
or become moist.

Personally, I thinks it's nerves.
Are you overly anxious about something?
Is something getting you down?
Are you working too hard?
All these things can manifest themselves
in a nervous itching response. I've had
it happen before and it was always something
going on in my life and when I faced it and
put it in it's proper perspective, suddenly
I was not bothered anymore.

Could be over-reaction to stimulation when you start to relax.....

Happens to most of us at some point, then once the suggestion is there - it
happens til you tell yourself your being silly.... LIke the convinvtion that
there is an insect in your bed..... but is just the sheet brushing you.....

Do you have a shower before going to bed? If so - think about your soap. If
not - try having one

Too much coffee or caffeine can cause itchiness. Also might be related to
restless leg syndrome noted by an unresistable urge to move or kick legs. I
find that it is highly related to the amount of coffee I drink.

Also it might be dust mites or pet dander. You can be tested by an allergist
for either one. An easy cure for pet dander is to kick the dog out of the
bedroom permanently and clean the heck out of your bedroom. As for dust
mites, that takes a bit of work. I have a dust mite allergy. Symptoms
include a stuffed up head in the morning. Also sneezing in teh morning. In
other words, you feel worse in the morning than you did at night. For your
dust mites, you can buy a dust mite proof mattress cover and pillow covers
(Walmart has them at a reasonable price). Wash bedding in hot water every
two weeks. For a short term tryout, I just covered the carpet with building
plastic.

Hello I just did a google search and your information popped up. I'm having the exact symptoms. I stopped taking Xanax about two months ago, cold turkey. I'd taken them mainly at bed. I'd been going through other withdrawals like hearing buzzing. But the latest is this!!!
It's horrible. I refuse to get back on the drug.

No need to worry it is curable disease. And, if you really want to cure Eczema then you should opt for Eurax Cream Generic (Crotamiton) which is used to treat different type of skin itching or Eczema.
And if you want it at your doorstep then you may opt for online pharmacies, Like: Medsonline4u.

Itching
Treatment of itching
Itching accompanies many skin disorders. It is always important to clarify why one claws, and treatment will be initiated accordingly. Consult your dermatologist for an evaluation if you are bothered by itching. See section for skin diseases, where the most common skin disorders is discussed in more detail.

I get this too. It can be horrendous if you let it get the better of you.

I have healthy radiant skin.

For me these itches are persistent throughout the whole day but unless i think about them then I don't notice them because my mind is actively working on other things so like a psychological block. One way to test this. During the day, out of your bed, close your eyes, breathe slowly and deeply until you feel your heartbeat then concentrate your mind on the areas of your body that usually itch and see if they start cropping up. I get the feeling you have the same problem as me because your problem is briefly remedied by the steps you take (psychological blocks) only then for the itching to come back. I don't think it is related to parasites.

As an analogy, at night your sense of hearing is much more acute, you hear little ticks, bumps and creaks you wouldn't even register in your mind during the day. I think these itches are the same. I've started itching just by writing this lol.

I believe my problem is seasonal and at its worst from late spring through to early fall (hay fever season).

My solution to this is to ignore the itches as hard as that may sound, it works generally. For some sudden sharp itches it is impossible but I have learned to cope mostly. It seems to be worse when I know I have a big day to wake up for (nerves).

I have this problem of getting random itches at night, and not everynight. Some are easy to ignore, but then comes a "shooting itch" that i HAVE to itch because it's near painful. Itching is contagious, in NeuroPsychology it is a nervous system discrepancy of "misfired signals in your nervous system".

Its been a while since i studied this, but your nervous system is full of small "connectors" that go out through the skin of your body, linking to your spine and then to your brain. A itch occurs when the brain no longer receives a response from one of the connectors. Itching it reaffirms to the brain that everything is ok- and the itch goes away. BUT once you itch one you get itchy elsewhere.

Knowing about Cognitive Psychology from my past, I understand this is one of the bodies many way's of releasing anxiety. Anxiety escapes the body in various forms, anxiety tension is released by stretching, YAWNING is a popular anxiety release, and when those are repressed i guess itching. It will differ person to person.

It makes me very agitated since i am calm and want to sleep. I have managed to calm my ambitious, overactive brain down at night, but now unless i'm "knock out tired" or taking Triazolam or a dozen beer as a sleep aid, that repressed anxiety is making me itch.

So what do I do? I can stay up for days without any sleep, and when i'm super busy with my business I can do it no problem. With a fair amount of coffee and good food, and the right activities, I make it through the day with no sleep. But come 8-9pm I no longer feel tired and back to staying awake until 10am...

I've had sleep issues for 29years, I am 29years old. Partially blamed on living in hospital for the first 2 years of my life with no structure and no parents at the time.
I'm past the point where I need to just accept poor sleep. I will never sleep 8hours, 4hours at best. I actually find myself more alert on little sleep, and when i make people laugh the most.

It's 7:30am now, and no sleep for me. i'm going to the beach. Maybe i'll nap there!

I once read where this condition is sort of a cousin to restless leg syndrome. Sometimes benadryl or some sleep aids can bring about restless leg syndrome, and I have noticed it can cause me to have the same itch problem you describe. It starts just when I'm dozing off, and only when my eyes are closed, and it will itch one spot at a time, with a new spot starting whenever I scratch the one that was previously itching. It's really aggravating.

I think I have what you have, because it's become a routine that as soon as I lay down my brain goes straight thinking of itching, haven't even pitched but when I think about it which as I said is a routine now I itch non stop. Although I can get 1-2 hours of sleep and still barely ipperate I'm in high school and I don't want to fail anything which I am because as soon as I sit BOOM lights out and I'm asleep. Anxiety could be the coalpret and is very likely. Please if you can help, help

Yes I suffer too from it. I am up right now because of it. Leg, then back, then leg, the back and now it is my scalp. Every time I am super tired and ready to sleep this seems to happen. I have the same problem. I am up scratching away now. I noticed that my itchy twitching and restless increases tenfold about 10 days before my period and even some times around ovulation. I think I may be allergic to progesterone and or have a hormone imbalance. Also, I decided I am going hypoallergenic everything again because I am losing my mind. I am going to the doctor to get some more tests done but I have been trying to solve this problem forever. Good luck and I will keep you posted on my progress.

Wow! just googled this and found someone with the exact same problem I have! This must be neurological, perhaps it's a dermatological sensitivity which is stimulated by the onset of sleep?

My little itches occur just as I am about to fall asleep, and they wake me up. I've tried ignoring them, but they just get more intense. They go away as soon as I lightly rub them. This happens about every other night, sometimes every night for a while, and continues for about a half hour. Never heard of this sort of insomnia.

That's very perceptive. I like the hearing analogy. Though why would one only get a single itch, which goes away when scratched, then another one pops up, gets rubbed, goes away, and this pattern repeats?

Why not multiple itches?

I'm going to try relaxing during the day and see if it happens.

Hello, I know this is a very old post but I've been scrolling forums for weeks to try and find someone who is describing the exact sort of itching I am experiencing, and this is it.
Not at any point of the day, only when I'm trying to fall asleep, and one itch after another, instantly.
If I touch one, it goes, if I leave it it starts to sting and then the body part which it is on will naturally twitch extremely vigorously.
I'm half of the opinion it is stress based but I'm just wondering if you've managed to find anything that helped you?

There's only so more nights of one or two more hours of sleep I can take!!

I am having the exact same problem. Hence i looked it up and winded up here.
From what i'm reading it's psychological/stress related which is really annoying. I just want to be able to sleep. I've tried ignoring it and also focusing my breathing and the sort. The only way i get past it is to well give in and not sleep, Or stay up way later than i'd like to until i'm too tired for the condition to effect me and even then the sleep isn't restful.

Ok so I have this too like every night even with changed sheets. So I figured out that hot water (hot showers) removes the natural oils from your skin which will cause itchiness. It's said that if you take a lukewarm bath and something to do with baking soda it should help. They also say it's from excessive activity and anxiety and/or stress. So I'm going to (you should to) try to take it easy during the day and then see what happens from there.

This seems old so you may never see it but I too have this awful issue. Some nights it will keep me up absolutely the whole time, or at a state of about half asleep. I have asked my doctor and she was dumbfounded. I googled and the only thing that I could find which would remotely explain it has something to do with the body temp dropping slightly at sleep time. Problem is, I couldn't really understand the explanation of how they connected. Something about it being similar to when you get dry, itchy skin during the dry, cold months and the effect of the body temp dropping is similar. Maybe you could try to google some part of what I posted and see if there is anything new about it. Do you take pain meds? I touched on something about that too, but I can't find it again and I don't remember the details. Best of luck. If you figure it out, please come on here an let me know what you found.

This is a really old post but hear goes nothing
I too have had this for around six years I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid and was told that it may cause high skin sensitivity!
However my go has now said this is no less beer the case
I use to try and fall asleep and then suddenly sharp prickly itch at my scalp down my spine back of my legs then feet then chin etc
It’s horrid and has started to get worse I now have small scans or sours appearing on my spine and scalp haven’t slept for three days but then again I’m use to this now will normally get three to eight hours sleep a week (not an exaggeration) tried showers new bed linen clean bed , coco butter , detoxing off tea and milk ,allergie tablets etc nothing hasn’t worked if you find something let me know

This is an old post. But the only thing I could find. I can't sleep right now, it doesn't happen every night so I know it's not anything in my bed or allergies. But when it does happen it starts right when I'm getting relaxed enough to start to fall asleep. I'll get an itch on my foot, scratch it and it's fine, then my arm, then my eye, then my back, and so on. I end up not being able to sleep cuz I'm to busy scratching one itch after the other. And I can't just ignore it or I'll end up laying here with 5 spots on me that itch.

I've had this issue forever. Slept in different beds, different houses, some with pets, some without. I know it's not bugs, or needing to change my sheets. I've tried that, I've tried getting up and putting lotion on, taking a shower. Nothing helps except staying up later till I'm REALLY tired, then it stops.

It only happens a few times a week, sometimes less. But it drives me crazy, I can never find anything about it. Every search brings up stuff about, skin conditions, dry skin, bugs, allergies. And I know it's not any of those.

This is the only thing I've been able to find that's like what I'm dealing with.

At least now I know I'm not alone lol

I am also suffering from this problem since last 6-7 years. I am from India. This probably happens during weather change. When weather remains the same during summers or winters, there is no problem buy if 'probably' weather changes or if I go to any other place having a different kind of weather, then this problem starts. I have discovered a solution to this problem. If itching happens, apply a body oil all over body known as 'Keo Karpin Body Oil'. It given instant relief. It works 90% of the times.

This drives me insane, I lay to sleep and right eye, neck and my right shoulder or arm feel irritated. This is causing me to stay awake and I feel I have to scratch this itch, I hate it severely because I haven't had it except for the last month or so, I've literally imagined driving a knife into my eye would be less irritating... (obviously I won't). I also sleep with my dog but that's not a problem as it predates this irritation, I can't deal with it as it's killing me, I'm trying to find solace online it's how desperate I am to sort this out.

Wow. Figured I wasn't alone in this but good Lord, You guys....i have 3 dedicated scratching devices that I use nearly every night. A sharp bristled brush for my head....a generic plastic comb for general purpose scratching and a homemade long handled unit for those hard to reach areas.
It's well past irritating at this point as I'm sure you are all aware. There has to be a cure out there somewhere.
Welp....its now......1:45 in the a.m. In going to go give it another try.
Good luck and God Speed, fellow scratchers.

Also it can be caused by medications, contraceptives, alcohol, stress, allergy, hormone imbalance, if anybody has any cures that help please let me know as im at my wits end. Thanks

I get this too! I have a cat and I'm allergic to cats, but she's not allowed in my room. And yes, it even happened when I didnt have the cat.

It starts as I'm relaxing in bed. Maybe an itch on my arm, leg, butt cheek, stomach. Just anywhere. If I scratch the itch moves to somewhere else.

One thing that did seem to work, and its "weird"... I find by running my hands across body parts, the itching goes away. Like I'm pushing the itch out or something.

And yea, Cannabis helps but its not an option for me at the moment.

Wow! A 14 year post still going strong! I googled my symptoms and this came up. I’m literally going insane from the itching. I have fibromyalgia, idiopathic hypersomnia, restless leg, and periodic leg movement disorder. I don’t know if any of that contributes to the itching. It’s only when I lay down for a nap or go to bed. It doesn’t matter where I lay down, who’s bed I’m in, or the time of day/night. It starts as one spot, then skips around. It was confined to a part of my leg. Now it’s my leg, hips, feet, head, face, etc... basically my whole body! Now the running “itchy patches” have turned from just itching into the feeling of many invisible bugs crawling on my whole body at the same time plus the itching. I feel it now but there’s nothing there! I have nerve problems along with numb spots on me. It could be my overactive nerves. When I’m not trying to sleep, the fibromyalgia has me itching but I don’t know where. I have to scratch everywhere to find it. I have to scratch my leg to get my back to stop itching, my foot to stop my leg itch, etc... I could go on but y’all get the point.... I’m screwed up! It’s a different itch that my bedtime itch though. I’ve noticed on previous comments that many have nerve problems and many take a sleep aid or allergy med. i have a part in both of those so there may be something to that. I don’t have any house animals. Only a 700lb hog that’s outside. I don’t have any known allergies. If anyone knows of a miracle cure, please fill me in!

I’ve had this same problem for almost 2 years. I think it’s stress. Or anxiety. I get these itching fits once or twice a week. And here I am trying to fall asleep and I’m assaulted by the itching and twitching. I’m in tears. I hate this so much. I’ve already taken 6 Tylenol pm and I still can’t fall asleep. I just hate my body and how it betrays me

I feel the exact same.

I have suffered this for roughly about 8 years, on an almost nightly basis. And I have yet to find a permanent solution.

However... I have discovered that (though only occasionally) walking around for about 5-10 minutes can alleviate the itchyness/twitchy limbs enough to catch a couple of hours sleep.

It mostly used to be my legs, however it has recently spread to my arms.

I hope this helps a little bit. And if you have discovered anything to help I would be greatly appreciative if you would share them with me.
Thank you

Hi All,

It's stopped!!!!!!! I'm in Wiltshire UK and I have stopped drinking the tap water! I was trying to reduce plastic waste so had stopped drinking bottled water and chilling tap water instead. We went away for 2 weeks to a house with a borehole (so not on mains water) and the itching went away. I've not changed washing powder or anything. I still use tap water for hot drinks but so far so good! Hope this helps some of you!

We’re all itchy! The worst ones for me are the bottom of my feet ones! I’m going to start journaling the itchy nights to try to find patterns. I find relief when I add a drop of peppermint essential oil to unscented lotion and put it on my legs and feet and back, though I believe it mostly to be a mental stress issue then a physical one it still helps!

For me the exact same thing has been going on for a few years. It is extremely frustrating, ruins my mood and I am easily agitated because of it during the day as if I generally become more sensitive to pain and irritation. I've noticed I get a lot more sensitive to everything because of it. As for the cause, my guess is that it's stress & anxiety related.

The fact that the itching "moves" around the body is one of the worst things ever: it's like a big fat joke played on me by my body and it drives me NUTS!

For a while, when it was really bad, I found an Antihistamine + Melatonine combination in Singapore. I don't remember the brand but it was the only OTC medication I found that seemed to tackle the entire issue and allowed me to sleep. Now it's back and the meds are finished. Will get more when I go to Singapore (I'm from Amsterdam, Netherlands).

I will try the following as mentioned in the posts that came before:
- less or no more coffee
- less or no more tea
- no smoking
- no alcohol
- no milk

And the most interesting (and the only one with a solution it seems)
- NO TAP WATER (posted on 11/23/18)

Let's see if this works. If I ever find a (permanent) solution I will share it here.

Good luck to you all.

Hi, the itching and twitching you are having would probably be your brain seeing if you are awake or not. When you go to bed to sleep your brain will send signals to see if you are awake or not, they can be all over your body sometimes or only is some places, if you dont scratch ot move your brain gets ready to paralyze you so you dont get up and sleep walk, this is also how to trigger lucid dreaming. If you feel the itch or twitch just ignore it and you will realize after a bit that you cant move or it is hard to move, once you fall asleep you will fall into an REM sleep and a lucid dream may occur

I've been suffering from the same itching for several years. I'm experiencing it tonight and finally found this thread with people who have the same issue and the original post was 18 years ago. I've lost so much time from work due to lack of sleep and for doctor appointments to try to resolve this, lost thousands on co-pays and out of pocket expenses and still no answer or cure. Depression doesn't even begin to describe how I feel after years of 1-2 hours of sleep per night.

CETERIZINE worked for me!

After suffering from this for 3 years, and trying a lot of (perscription) antihistamines CETERIZINE was the (over the counter) antihistamine that worked for me. It reduced the itching almost completeljy. I would take it just before going to bed with water.

I started it a year ago, and since 6 months I stopped using it entirely without any more itching at night. I don't know if this was the only factor, but the itching is gone (thank god, it was driving me insane).

Try it. It's harmless and you can probably get it anywhere and it's cheap (I pay US$3 per strip of 10 pills in Asia).

High doses of B vitamins were the major thing that helped me. I know the issue isn't purely psychological but it does seem to be triggered by stress, sort of like how I grind my teeth due to stress but the end result is clearly physical damage to my teeth. It also gets worse around allergy season, so I often throw in a cetirizine and a Benadryl.

Like others have stated I feel an 'itch' and when I go to scratch/rub it, it immediately moves somewhere else on the body. Pain does not negate the itch but gentle rubbing can. The more I itch/rub the worse it gets.

I found out about the B vitamins on a fluke. They are supposed to give you energy and since I wasn't sleeping due to the itching I started taking them. When the itching is bad I easily take 4-9 of them a day and it can take a couple days for me to get super satisfactory results. Keep in mind that overdosing on B vitamins can cause people to feel itchy, but it's pretty hard to OD on B vitamins. It is a possibility tho and I don't want anyone taking my advice and then hurting themselves. I don't know if this will work for anyone else but I felt the need to share what I have experienced.

Good luck out there, I hope you all get some good sleep soon.
