Claritin-D includes Pseudoephedrine Sulfate while Sudafed and many
other allergy meds include Pseudoephedrine HCI. Does anybody know what
the differance is between the two?

The difference is the salt (charged ion) that is used to balance the
charge of the pseudoepherdrine molecule. One form uses chlorine, the
other uses sulfur. It is needed to create a powder for shipment
among other things. I don't know of any instances where that affects
the efficacy of the drug once in solution. There can be effects on
the stability of the solution but most likely it is a production cost
issue.

Jerry -- thanks for the reply - so in that case Sudafed is the same as
the decongestant used in Claritin-D. Is that correct? I am trying to
decide what allergy med to switch too now that Claritin is no longer
covered by my insurance plan.

Thanks

Bob

Do you want an antihistamine or a decongestant? They are not the same
thing.

Both :> I didn't understand the the decongestant used in Claritn,
Allegra Zyrtec, Sudafed was really the same. Have had very good
results with Claritin-D so am leary to try something new. However -
with Claritin no longer being covered my my HMO, I was looking for
what other product might come close. Turns out that the only other med
covered is Allegra, which I tried once and did not have good result
with. So - I think I will be using Sudafed 12 hour for a decongestant,
and buy regular Claritin OTC.

Yes, there is only one decongestant, pseudoephedrine, approved in the US
(there used to be two, and the other, PPA, was banned a couple years ago).
Any medicine, prescription or OTC, that contains decongestant, contains
pseudoephedrine (including all the -D antihistamines).

It's really better to take them separate anyhow, antihistamine and
decongestant (if you need both), so that you can separately adjust the doses
of each, see what really works for you, etc.

Actually, you can buy pseudoephedrine generically much cheaper than the
brand name Sudafed. Look for the store brand name in the drug store. Or
still cheaper, you can buy it on the Internet. (Perhaps only the short
acting though, I don't know if there is a generic 12 hour. Time release meds
never work for me well, anyhow. And you wouldn't really want much to be in
your bloodstream at night, as it could keep you awake.)

Claritin (generic name-loratadine) is also available OTC now by other names
than "Claritin", such as "Alavert", probably at a lower price. (Probably
pretty soon there will be store brand names of it available too, at a much
lower price.)

Thank you Bob & Geri for the original question posted and everyone who has replied. In my case I prefer the Pseudoephedrine HCL mainly because my digestive system cannot tolerate Sulfates. Come to find out some people have severe allergic reactions to Sulfates.
