I have done a search or two but can't find much reference to broccoli as a
common allergen. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of broccoli
causing hives?
The symptoms are several insect-bite sized swellings, usually on my buttocks
(!) and repeatedly in the same place. They go away after about 24 hours. I
sometimes also get swellings (no common size or shape) on the soles of my
feet, my lips, my fingers and wrists and occasionally my eyelids.
I am feeling fairly confident that I have narrowed it down to broccoli and
having done so would be interested if there are any linked foodstuffs that I
should also avoid.
I love broccoli and would love to be able to get it back in my diet - is
this ever going to be possible?
Thanks
Andrew
Hello,
There are few real allergic disease published with brocolis but they are the
same family of mustard (in french "crucifères) which is a common allergen.

Are you sure the trouble comes from the broccoli and not something added, maybe
agricultural chemicals or chemicals to preserve freshness?
Can you eat other Brassica oleracea varieties such as kale, collards, cabbage,
cauliflower, kohlrabi or Brussels sprouts, or non-oleracea brassicas such as
turnips (roots or leaves) or mustard leaves or seeds?

By common allergen, are you referring just to mustard or to the whole family,
"crucifères" in French, which is Brassicaceae in Latin?
Have not had any problems with cabbage, cauliflower or turnips. However
brussel sprouts may have caused a small reaction the other day. Need to
experiment further.

I have found that one food usually starts the problem for me and then
if I use a food in the same family to replace it too often it starts
to bother me too. I guess that's one in support of a rotation diet.
Hope this won't be the case for you as you seem to really miss your
brassica's.
