I'm new to martial arts and was curiouse about these two sytles. It sounds
like Wado Ryu is very much parallel to Hapkido in its approach. Does anyone
know of a school in Manhattan that teaches Wado?

Thanks,

RR

RR,
Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), founded Aikido in 1942, and Hapkido,
which is a cousin of Aikido and some other native Korean styles
was founded around 1959 by Yong Sul Choi (1904-1986), who possibly
studied Daito-Ryu Aiki Jujutsu from Takeda Sokaku, while working as
a servant for him while living in Japan from around 1919 to 1945.
Ueshiba was also a student of Sokaku.

Wado Ryu Karate was founded by Hironori Otsuka(1892-1982) in 1934.
It is a blend of:
1) Okinawan Shuri-Te; which was taught to by Shotokan Founder Gichin
Funakoshi, Shito-Ryu Founder Kenwa Mabuni,
and Naha-Te(Goju-Ryu) great Choki Motobu
and
2) Shindo Yoshin Ryu Jiujitsu, which Otsuka learned from Tatsusaburo
Nakayama (1870-1933) from 1898-1921.

It is possible that Otsuka may have studied some under Ueshiba, I
am not sure, but the similarities you might see between Wado and
Hapkido are probably through his Jiujitsu training. Otsuka also
trained in tachi dori and tanto dori(sword and knife defense), so
similarities to Aikido may be seen here too.

As for Wado Ryu Schools near Manhattan, here is a list of Wado
schools that I have that may help you. I am not sure about there
exact location in the New York area, so you might want to look
them up in the yellow pages, and see what is closest to you.

NJ Long Branch Wado-Ryu Isaac Henry, Jr, Sensei
NY Abdallah's KO Kickboxing Amer Abdallah, Shodan
NY Seishin-Kan Wado Kai James Hufnagel, Sensei
NY University of Rochester Chris Blaha, President
NY International Martial Arts Wado Kai Peter Avino, Yondan
Niagara On The Lake Wado Kai Karate Club Mike Allen, Sandan
Canada Niagara Falls Wado Kai Gary LaPlante, Rokudan

I hope this helps you in your search.

Best Wishes,
