I have recenlty got my "Shodan ho" (provisional black belt) in Goju Ryu
karate. This is a grade above 1st kyu attained after 2nd kyu (ie you grade
either to 1st kyu or shodanho) but not dan grade (ie shodan). Does any other
style have this grade? Does anyone know how it originated as until a few
years ago there was just 1st kyu (brown belt) and 1st dan?

More money out of graduation fees? More steps to achieve in practice =>
keeping motivated by not making people wait too much? Reasons may be
anything.
I don't understand these...I'm all for one kyu-system. Any classic system is
good, however.
You can choose if you graduate up to the 1st kyu OR shodanho? That IS
interesting. I don't believe any classic style has this kind of system.
1st kyu=>black is natural.
Sounds like local addition.

Congratulations

I am a Shodan in Goju ryu and I received my Shodan Ho aprox. 5 years ago. It
was also new to me. I thought you went from 1 kyu to 1 dan ........oooo
no..... I went through a blue and black grading only to find out that it was
Shodan Ho.

To answer your question about fee's ,There were none attached.

The condition to go to shodan was that I had to complete a thesis on on the
"Go" in Goju. I reckon that it was because my karate had to much an
undertone of "ju".

So yeah If your not ready for Shodan then "They" slip in good old shodan-ho.

Yours in karate

There should be three sub-grades in every kyu or dan grades, eg, shodan-ho,
shodan and shodan-sen, sort of a, b and c. But nowadays, most schools only
apply this to shodan-ho for sort of probation period for new black belts.
