It is also surprising that very few here are mentioning their instructors.
IMHO if you don't think that your Instructor is the most impressive that
you can work with then you are wasting your time (I know some of us are
also Instructors as well).
I am impressed with my Instructor Shojiro Sugiyama. I am not going to list
any great tournament successes (he pre-dated the All Japan) and who he has
trained or who he trained with. I am only going to say that if I didn't
think that he was the most impressive teacher that I could find I would
leave immediatly (and in Chicago with all the different Instructors who are
quite well known I think that means something). And even at the his age he
still manages to teach 5 days a week and stay active at a time when most
people spend the rest of their life in "homes" or "wheelchairs".
Mark
I agree.. however last time Sensei enoeda visit Norway, he know the names
of a lot of students.. and could tell if they had rise their level from last
time.. (I think thats impressive)
He was always my favorite at our summer camp.
A little more insight into human nature could have taken you even
further on this one, Rob. The nidan that teaches you the basics++ comes
out as someone you respect, someone you're indebted and grateful to, or
even as someone you feel a sort of love and admiration for. But you've
been so close for so long that you know where he fails or is lacking in
excellence or character. He never comes out as "impressive".
Your posts, if any, should go to show that no karate-kas are impressive
in any absolute sense. It's the guy who flashes into your world for a
brief spell of excellence, and then out again, who stands a chance of
keeping his downsides and drawbacks from your view and be labeled
"impressive".
Being "impressive" is as illusionary as anything else. This is just a
party game - get with your Zen, Rob, not your zentimentality.

Jerry Marr is a real star. With his background in Judo and good-natured,
knock-you-on-your-ass personality, he is a pleasure to train under. His
guys always fight hard, and if you get ahead of them they would rather lose
by a foul than get beat outright. His son Darren is living in Minneapolis
now and has done a lot to raise the level of kumite at Fusaro's. Darren
might join our early morning workout group....
Nonetheless, he's a fine instructor and has always been a nice and
friendly to me.

Just wondered where you heard of Mark Minarik as he used to teach/train in my
neck of the woods?

I suppose I might as well chime in on this one too, since he's the guy I
train under. His understanding of kihon is outstanding. He has this
phenomenal ability to imitate to show you exactly what you are doing wrong.
At his best, he can cut through all the shit and bring you to a completely
higher level of performance in a single training session. At his worst?
Well, Rob probably couldn't take 5 minutes in his presence. Elmar-do is
absolute heresy and those of us who are trying to pursue it have to tread
lightly.
His personality can cause both intense loyalty and intense dislike. I've
known him for 22 years and consider him a good friend, faults and all. The
better you get to know him, the more you understand he really is a lunatic.
But he's OUR lunatic, and WE AIN'T TRADIN' HIM!!!!

I guess I would have to list
Bob Shapoff
Joe Gayle
Tom Frobel
All three from Mori's NYC dojo in the 60' and 70's. Shapoff is in Denver
now, saw him last year. Gayle dropped out of the picture. Both on the US
team to Japan numerous times and some of the most technically proficient I
have ever seen. Frobel has the quickest hand I have ever seen.

Scott,
Does Tom Frobel still do his Lobster Man thing (big
padded suit)?

he just had arthroscopic surgery on last month. Just getting back out

Scott, I know Tom Frobel is your teacher and all students
are impressed by their instuctors. But trust me, Tom Frobel
has a VERY LOW level of ability... I've seen him BOMB
a 5th Dan exam in South Dakota. He couldn't even get through the Heian Kata,
as a matter of fact, he forgot EVERY kata he attempted to perform. He them
attempted to perform Bunkai.
I actually felt very bad and embarrassed for him...
If you don't believe me... Ask him about his 5th Dan exam
in front of Dalke and Gould.
Tom is a nice guy, but far too full of himself to improve beyond
his current level of technique and attitude. He is however
excellent at the management of an organization.
Sincerely,
Frank

Gee, Frank, you've been everywhere. And you know everyone. You must
be very famous. I want to be like you when I grow up.

Gee, really? Tome doesn't impress me due to being my instructor, I've trained
with many others over the years who didn't impress me as great at certain
things. His hand speed in sparing, I stand by.
Trust you? I don't know you except to see that you mouth off about things you
don't know. Your use of capitals suggests you age as about what, 12?

Seems your idea of what happened and other peoples ideas differ somewhat, but let
me get this right, trust you, right? I know all about the test. I've told Tom
for years his kata sucks. His bunkai? Let me guess, didn't follow your JKA
kihon basses lexicon? (Falsetto mode on) Oh My!!!!! (Falsetto mode off) As for
Kata, I have a tape of Dalke doing kata where he forgets many moves, has to
restart and his wind up is ludicrous. I show this tape to people and tell them
it is Dalke and they can't believe it.

Sure he is full of himself, look around yo in the Shotokan community, Look in
the mirror. What do you see? Ego, That's what. Seems like an ingredient for
those who train more than 2 years. Although you might not have hit that time
frame yet.
I bow to your obviously superior knowledge. ROTFLMAO
The really sad part Frank, is that you don't know when
Rob (or others) are yanking your chain.
It's been 5 days and you haven't called Rob on the
bogus part of what he wrote above.
Brad.
