Here is a list of Shotokan Sensei's who are NOT Japanese.
I feel that these men are truly incredible and have much to offer.
Not only are they excellent Karateka, but they are good HUMAN BEINGS !
At one time or another I have had the honor or training with them.

1) Dr. Milorad V. Stricevic (U.S.A.)
2) Andy Sherry (U.K.)
3) John McClary (U.S.A.)
4) Thomas Casale (U.S.A.)
5) Richard Gould (U.S.A.)
6) Stan Schmidt (South Africa)
7) John Mullin (U.S.A.)
8) Dusan Dacic (Yugoslavia)
9) Elwyn Hall (U.K.)
10) Frank Brennan (U.K.)
11) Rajeev Sinha (India)
12) Dr. Jorga (Yugoslavia)
13) Dr. Jorga (Germany)
14) Ian Rugel (Ecuador)
15) Randall Hassell (U.S.A.)

These 15 men in my opinion are not properly recognised or respected in the
Karate world, because they are not Japanese... I strongly recommend all
of them for a seminar if you can find them !!!

All the Best,
Frank

He was awesome, wasn't he? Beat the Japanese in Japan. What ever happened to
Aidan? I haven't heard about him in about ten years.

I'm from Nottingham, England and have known and trained, on and off for 18
years with Aidan Trimble. His association is Federation of Shotokan Karate. He
now teaches not just all over Great Britain but Europe and even India and South
Africa to name but a few. In my opinion he is one of the best around at the
moment. I know a lot about his early days as I used to train under him at his
first club and along side him under Sensei Shiro Asano, one of the top Shotokan
Karate International instructors in the World, and fought along side in
numourous S.K.I. British championships. More available if required.

At least here in germany, it was/is(?) called SKI (Shotokan Karate
International), no F.

The german head at the time I trained there about 1980 was A. Nagai. Is
this the same like your SKIF?

Maybe the naming is a european thing. I was just a kid then, and didn't
care about the org thing.

It was my understanding that Kanazawa left JKA in 1977 and
in December 77 formed SKIF. After checking the SKIF USA
headquarters page it confirms that. (thanks George Weller :)

So it's probably SKIF and Kanazawa.

On an interesting note... what rank is Adrian Claiming now-a-days?

Aidan Trimble is now 6th Dan
Shotokan Karate International of Great Britain is headed by
Sensei Shiro Asano 8th Dan who is Chief Instructor of Europe and Great
Britain.

Brief history of SKI.

Nottingham karate club first formed in early summer 1965.

Mr. Vernon Bell who formed the British Karate-Do Federation first brought
Kanazawa to Great Britain as a 5th Dan in the JKA in 1965/6.

The Karate Union of Great Britain was formed towards the end of 1967 with
Kanazawa now 6th Dan as Chief Resident Instructor.

Enoeda {now head of KUGB} and Asano both 4th Dans were brought over by Kanazawa
in Spring 1969 to be Joint Chief Instructors to KUGB. Enoeda responsible for
southern-based clubs and Asano the Midlands area clubs.

Kanazawa had now been promoted by JKA to be Chief European Instructor based in
Germany.

Nottingham Karate Club brought Asano to Nottingham where he was to be based.
Nottingham,Leicester & Wolverhampton undertook to share Asano's work schedule,
but after a year or so Leicester & Wolverhampton withdrew this responsibility.
Asano's work schedule was therefore widened to take in Sheffield and other
Yorkshire clubs.

In Autumn 1974 deep divisions arose between the Executive Committee of KUGB and
those club having Asano as their Chief Instructor. This arose from the idea
that Kanazawa was promoting in Japan to try to make JKA an International
organisation.

Kanazawa was now Deputy Chief Instructor of JKA with Nakayama as head.

In 1974 at an Extra-ordinary General Meeting of KUGB Kanazawa and Asano were
expelled by KUGB as they would not give an undertaking to obey various dictums
put out by KUGB.

Almost at that moment The Shotokan Karate International of Great Britain was
formed with Nottingham as one of the founder member clubs. About 6 months after
SKI GB became operative the worldwide organisation of SKI became established by
Kanazawa with Tokyo as headquarters.

SKI GB held their first National Championships in August 1975.

SKI GB applied to the then governing body for British Karate for membership in
order to be recognised as an authentic Karate Organisation, but was refused
through objection by KUGB.

Eventually the governing body was reformed and functioned as the English Karate
Board, but basically the same KUGB domination. In July 1976 the Federation of
English Karate Organisations was formed mainly through efforts and promotion of
SKI and this block of smaller English Karate Organisations was allowed into
membership of EKB. Thus through membership to FEKO and its membership with the
EKB SKI GB became an authentic and recognised Karate Organisation.
