SHIN JI BUDO MUSOJI NO MAKI
(The Workings of the Kami Budo Purification Volumn)
Translated into English and Romanji by
Ward Rafferty
Copyright 1997

The following is the beginning of a translation in progress I have made of a
small volume published in a limited printing by Aikido 10th Dan Hikitsuchi
Michio of the Aikido Kumano Juku Dojo in Shingu, Japan. It is based on a
series of taped private conversations that Hikitsuchi Sensei had with O'
Sensei on these teachings and practices. I have given the Japanese version
in Romanji first, followed by the English translations because many of O'
Sensei's lectures on spiritual practices were given in Kototama. I feel that
it is important for serious Aikido students who are interested in these
studies, but who may not read Japanese to have direct access to the
materials in their original form. If sufficient interest exists, I would be
willing to publish further translations of this book as it progresses as
well as taped conversations that I had with Hikitsuchi Sensei on O'Sensei's
Aikido Kototama teachings and practices.

Waga kumi ni wa Su no KOTOTAMA yori umare ide tamai shi
AME-NO-HO-HI-FU-NO-KAMI no seidai yori denrai seru misogi no shin ji ari.

In our country, (born from the Divine sound SU), there is this Divine
Purification work which was transmitted and bestowed to us from, and during
the reign of AME-NO-HO-HI-FU-NO-KAMI.

Kono shin ji wa Shibi Tenkai no Kami gami to iedomo ichi nichi mo okotari
tamau koto naku konichi ni oyo beru shu yo no Koto gara nari.

It is essential, right now, to reach the Divine Merger that this work,
properly done, confers. We must not be off guard and neglect ot fail to do
this work of the Heavens and "all of the Kami" (YAOYOROZU-NO-KAMI) for even
one day.

Somo somo misogi wa dai ni shite wa chi boku heiten ka to nari.

In the first place, in big terms, the Purpose of this work is to lead to
and insure a lasting World Peace.

Sho ni shite wa shushin sai da no kihon tari.

In lesser terms it is the very basis of Moral Training and Religious and
Self-Purification. This Self-polishing then leads to Correct Action.

Shi kashite misogi ni wa shu shu no hoshiki tsutawarei misogi ni konsuru
byo ji no uchi ni te motomo shuyo naru Shin ji wa Furutama no gyo nari.

Concerning the Path of Training in the Way of Purification Training as a
whole, among all the methods of which it is comprised, in turn, the most
essential is Shin ji wa Furutama no (literally, To Shake Your Soul).

Kore ni wa shu shu no hoski are domo.

In this, there are also various ways of doing Furutama.

Futsu no baai ni wa ryo te o heso atari no zenpo in oite ju ji keini kumi
awa se.

The usual way is to make the form of a cross with both hands clasped and to
place them in the area closely in front of the navel.

Kon shin no chichara o komete Shin Mei o tonae nagara jiko no konpon Sei
Shin O gi ka su shite. Sakan in moretsu ni su ji pun mai shi su ji kan re
zoku shite. Zen shin o furu ii uga kasu Gyo Ji nari.

With all your power and focus, gather up your Consciousness and
Concentration while chanting and invoking the Name of the Kami in order to
gain insight into the basis, foundation or essence of one's Self and into
the Purest Essence of God. You vigorously fire or shake your Spirit
continuously from several minutes to several hours. The shaking is so
vigorous that it moves the whole body in order to find The Divine Method.

Shin Dai no Misoji ni wa Kami Gami Isure ni mo AME-NO-HO-HI-FU-NO-KAMI no
Mi Na o tonae matsuraretaru ga.

In the Epoch Age of the Kami, The Purification Practice consisted of
chanting and invoking the names of all of the Kami not just
AME-NO-HO-HI-FU-NO-KAMI.

Gendai ni te wa gojin no Misogi ni wa sai sho Ame (Heaven) Tera (Bright
Clear Fire) Su (Crown Jewel) O (Expansive) Kami (Light Coming From Above)
(pronounced Ameterasu-O-Kami) Tsugini O-Haraido-No-O-Kami Tsugini
Ame-No-Mi-Naka-Nushi-No-O-Kami no Mi Na o tonae matsuru nari.

In our present Age The Purification Practice is to chant and invoke these
Kami names: First, Ameterasu-O-Kami, next, O-Haraido-No-O-Kami (The Kami
charged with the Purification of the Earth) finally,
Ame-No-Mi-Naka-Nushi-No-O-Kami.

Kono Furutama no gyo ni yori te sei shin nai ho no momen jaso o shochin
suru tomoni. Shin tai kakubu no han tai teki koritsu teki no katsudo o sei
gyo shi. Ji ko no konpon sei shin o chu shin to shitaru zenshin no to itsu
teki katsudo o nasu nari.

By means of comprehension of this Furutama exercise, you erase and get rid
of distracting and wicked thoughts and gain control of every isolated and
opposite part of the body, and thereby its actions. You see before you your
own Spiritual Essence in order to unite your heart and become one with the
Heart of the Kami.

Misogi no aida wa hibi no shokuji o genji te. Asa yu ni ichi go no kayu to
mitsubu no umeboshi shoryo no goma shio igai issai tabe sezaru mo.

During the time you are doing this Purification exercise, you cut down on
your daily meals. In the morning and at night you have one serving of kayu
(rice gruel), 3 low salt umeboshi and a small quantity of salted seseme
seeds. You eat nothing at all besides that.

Sore wa mattaku jikono konpon seishin (Honshu Soshin) ni taisuru zenshin no
tei koryoku o gensatsu shi.

That diet reduces bodily resistance to the realization of your True Self
and allows your True Guardian Deity to manifest and operate.

Hitoe ni shin shin no toitsu o hakaru ni bensuru yoi nari. Shikaru ni shin
tai wa sono genshoku no tame ni tsudare mata wa yo mi konnan ni ochiru to iu
shimpai wa nashi. Nai bu no kon pon sei shin ga kofun kincho no do o machi
kuru yue ni kaette genki zen shin ni jyu soku zuno wa rei sei mei kai no
nari.

The earnest practice is a convenient way to measure the unification of your
Mind-Body-Spirit. There is no need to worry about body fatigue, disease or
trouble and distress due to this reduced diet. Rather than tension or
strain, the degree of Internal Spiritual Essence is stimulated and increased
leading to a completely healthy body and to clear explicit thinking and
calmness and composure of your brain.

Zen shin sokai ni shite kami no ki bun tada yo nai sei shite eki shiki
tsumi shi no nakaraba tatoe hyaki sen man no kyo teki ara ware kuru tomo
osorezu tai kai taka yama o toppa shi uchu o donto suru kikai boppatsu shite
ichi go no kayu igai ni nani mono o mo tabesezu to iedomo benni kira o
oboyuru koto nashi.

When you do this introspection, the whole body is refreshed and exhilarated
and you float on a part (as a part?) of the Kami. You breathe the Universe
in and out. This leads to an outburst of Ki. You can break through the open
sea and the highest mountains. For example, if you have no spirit of
wrongdoing, with this outburst of Ki, even though a myriad of formidable
enemies emerge and manifest, you will be without fear and overcome them.
Even though you haven't eaten anything besides one bowl of rice gruel, you
don't feel starved.

Adaka mo jiko wa shin dai no mukashi ni kaeri taru shin chi to nari. Hihon
rinzaku no jisei o meiryo ni kontoku suru ni itaru nari.

You have a feeling or sensation that it is as though you have gone back to
the time of the Epoch of the Kami and are now an active participant. You
clearly realize and reach the best attributes of the Japanese race (i.e.,
that of the Kami (Kanagara no michi).

As a Kendo and Reiki student, I try to incorporate O'sensei's teaching into my practice. Is it possible to get the entire translation?

kind regards
