by Carl Hiaasen. As new and unread except small bump on bottom edge of

photography book closely chronicles the workaday life of Florida's
unsung and largely unseen Cracker cowboys. Their work is similar to
their Western counterparts only in that they both work with cattle.
Working in swamp and hammock, Cracker shows the behind the scenes love
and sweat that these caretakers of the environment bring to their
lifestyle. An art photography book as much as a pictoral essay,
Cracker is for anyone who loves the cowboy life. It also shows that
Florida is a lot more than beaches, Miami and DisneyWorld. "Cracker"
was awarded two awards in the Ninth Annual Midwest Independent
Publishers Associations' 1997-1998 Book Achievement Awards, for "BEST
ART/ PHOTO /COFFEE TABLE (STYLE) BOOK" and "BEST COVER DESIGN". This
is on the heels of winning a "MASTERS" certificate in the National
Photography Awards competition. $60.00

binding with silver lettering, pictorial dustjacket, 204 pages with
color photos. Text by Les Standiford. Inscribed by the author on
half-title page, "Always, Alan S. Maltz." Miami, only 100 years old,
certainly has its share of social and economic problems, but the city
does not hurt for exciting visual subjects. As he so artfully
accomplished in Key West Color (1995), Maltz trains his camera on not
only colorful but also telling features of Miami's urban landscape,
from downtown skyscrapers to the treasures of art deco architecture in
South Beach. Miami is a place where nature and civilization often
collide, but more often the two coalesce and collaborate in explosions
of creative dwellings and lifestyles. Unveiling the true essence of
the City of Dreams, award-winning photographer Alan S. Maltz has
captured the essence of Miami, and from South Beach to the Everglades.
The book was awarded the Certificate of Honor--Best Armchair Travel
Book by the Mid American Publishers Association. $60.00

[177] Tarbell, Ida M. and Addison Mizner. THE FLORIDA ARCHITECTURE OF
ADDISON MIZNER. ill. . NY: William Heilburn, 1928. First Edition.
Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Original Cloth. Very Good / No
Jacket, As Issued. Folio. Publisher's orangish-rust colored cloth and
marbled boards. Paper printed label on the spine, top edge gilt,
marbled endpapers. Cloth slightly soiled, rubbed, and frayed at spine
ends. Frontispiece portrait by F.E. Geisler. 184 photogravure plates,
photographic reproductions of Mizner's houses. Study of Mizner's
rococo stucco houses built in Florida during the early 1900s. A very
good copy. Mizner, along with Richard M. Hunt and Stanford White, is
ranked as one of the great American society architects. Although he
had no formal training in architecture, he spent many years studying
design in Guatemala and at the University of Salamanca in Spain. When
he returned to the United States, he apprenticed at the San Francisco
office of the architect William Polk, a leader of the Spanish Mission
style, eventually becoming a partner in the firm. His architectural
work in Florida, documented in this book, clearly shows the influence
of his early study and travels. But Mizner's designs are not strict
copies; his style is a unique combination of Revival Hispanic
architecture and traditional American impulses, adapted to the climate
of Florida and the lifestyle of his wealthy clientele. This book,
Florida Architecture of Addison Mizner, was put together by a group of
Mizner's friends and associates who wished to document his work and
promote his practice. Paris Singer, the sewing machine tycoon, who was
one of his clients, wrote the foreword for the book. The photographs
are reproduced in a rich brown and show the exteriors and interiors of
Mizner's buildings, primarily in Palm Beach and Boca Raton. The
facades are elegantly restrained, showing the strength of massive
walls relieved by articulated architectural features such as exterior
staircases, towers, and grand entrances. The interiors show a
comfortable and inviting series of rooms with loggias, cloisters, and
patios giving way to living and dining rooms, to music rooms and
libraries. In 1928, the International Studio magazine reviewed this
book and called both the book and Mizner's work "monumental." It is
still true today. $1,200.00
[251] Visalli, Santi. Miami. NY: Rizzoli International, 1993. First
Edition. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Hard Cover. Fine / Very Good.
Blue cloth binding with title blind-stamped on front cover, gilt
lettering on spine, in bright pictorial dj with one small repaired
tear. 224 pp., full-page color photos. Intro by Beth Dunlop. The fifth
in a series of photographic books on great American cities by Santi
Visalli, Miami explores all of the characteristic aspects of this
dynamic Florida metropolis, from the pastel-pretty Art Deco District
and the sumptuous Villa Vizcaya, to the sun-drenched beaches,
cruise-ship quays, and glowing neon signs outside the hottest night
spots. With a special talent for conveying detail, drama, and light,
Visalli has captured the special ambience of Miami - where strong
Hispanic and Caribbean cultural influences commingle with the youthful
exuberance of the city's recent architectural explosion. The city's
residents: the flamingoes of Hialeah Park, the macaws of Parrot
Jungle, and the dolphins of the Seaquarium, as well as their roller
skaters and sunbathers along Ocean Driye, populate this vivid panorama
of one of North America's most exciting vacation spots. Miami offers
more than 200 views of this extravagantly colorful city--from its
cruise ships afloat on turquoise water to its Art Deco district to its
Hispanic districts. $50.00

[075] Barclay, Juliet. Havana : A Portrait of a City. ill. Martin
Charles. NY: Cassell, 1995. First Edition. Soft Cover. As New.
Small folio, stiff pictorial self-wraps. 223 pages, 75 b&w and color
illustrations. Havana grew from a straggle of huts into the most
brilliant metropolis of the Caribbean, unique in the vibrancy of its
culture and the rich splendor of its architecture. This book traces
the development of Cuba's capital from the early sixteenth century to
its heyday in the late nineteenth century. In the course of its
history, the city was coveted by Spain's European rivals, looted by
pirates, occupied by British troops and renowned as a center of the
slave trade. It became a treasure house for the Spanish empire as the
wealth of the Indies passed through the city's wharves. By the
nineteenth century Havana had truly come of age. It was elegant, vivid
and sophisticated and visitors flocked in the thousands. In 1982
Havana was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its palaces,
churches and great houses are now being restored and the most
extravagantly beautiful city in the Caribbean is beginning, once
again, to take its rightful place as one of the world's great
attractions. Combining detailed research with an obvious affection for
the city, Juliet Barclay has written a clear, concise and evocative
history of Havana. Beautifully illustrated with Martin Charles' color
photographs and with contemporary engravings and paintings, this book
is a fitting tribute to the city of Havana. (multiple copies

[192] Burri, Rene. Cuba y Cuba (Motta Photography Ser.). Washington,
DC: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1998. First Edition. VF/F.
Normal shelwear, never read, contents as new. 60 pages, photographs.
Reports of poverty and waves of refugees have given most Americans the
impression that contemporary Cuba is paralyzed by communist austerity
and drained by economic isolation. Burri is a Swiss-born documentary
photographer who has taken photographs in Cuba since the early 1960's.
Many depict the confident years right after the revolution and the
more recent urban landscapes and street life. A sequence of twelve
black-and-white images depicts the confident years immediately
following the 1959 revolution: cigar-smoking workers build fishing
boats, and children play baseball in front of the National Cathedral.
The lush, color-saturated urban landscapes that follow, created
between 1984 and 1993, focus on the iconography of Cuba's military
regime and the vitality of its street life. A uniformed soldier
standing at a curb glances sharply down the street, a young woman
dancing barefoot on a terrace strikes a statuelike pose, a boy in
turquoise shorts tries out a yellow hula hoop. Accompanied by an
essay that clearly describes Cuba's current poverty and uncertainty
but holds out the possibility of economic rebirth, and by poems
that celebrate the beauty of the island, these striking pictures pay
tribute to a people determined to meet the future with passion and
equanimity. Burri reveals a human element in Cuba, a land still
sorely in need of a paint job, as evidenced by his bright color snaps
of the economically challenged island nation. The concrete may be
crumbling, but the human spirit will prevail is the message of these
mainly color shots. Of course, there are Castro, Che and cigars here,
but it is the smiling faces of children, who know not of the Bay of
Pigs or some old missile crisis, that give this book and the Cuban
nation its appeal. $20.00

[100] Rodriguez, Ana with Garvin, Glenn. Diary of a Survivor :
Nineteen Years in a Cuban Women's Prison. NY: St. Martin's Press,
1995. First Edition. Very Fine / Very Fine. As New condition, unread.
The story of Ana Rodriguez, a young medical student arrested by Cuba's
State Security in early 1961 for her role in the anti-Castro
underground. As a teenager, she had been active in the fight against
the Batista dictatorship and at first welcomed Castro's triumph. But
as the repressive nature of Castro's regime became ever clearer, Ana
joined the fledgling struggle against Castro as well. Betrayed to the
authorities by an informant, she was tried, convicted, and sentenced
to thirty years in prison. Diary of a Survivor is a remarkably
gripping tale in the tradition of Prisoner Without a Name, Cell
Without a Number and Papillon, but with a single difference: while
those books were about men, Ana Rodriguez tells the story of an
utterly remarkable group of women jailed as political prisoners.
Beaten, starved, threatened and bullied, locked in blackout cells for
months at a time, denied water and medical treatment for long
stretches, these women resisted with astonishing courage, guile,
occasional violence, and an unshakable will, breaking their captors
rather than being broken themselves while completely defeating the
repressive apparatus of a totalitarian state. $10.00
