[1057] (Rackham, Arthur) Maggie Browne (aka Margaret Hamer): THE BOOK
OF BETTY BARBER. London: Oxford University Press, 1920. 2nd ed. Cloth,
12mo, 129 pp. (Rackham, Arthur illus.) Very Good: gift inscription,
light foxing, archival repair spine. A fanciful tale of music and
fairies from early in Rackham's career. Scarce. When these
illustrations first appeared in 'Little FOlk' magazine in 1900, Rackham
was noted only as a black & white artist, and color printing was in its
infancy. Thus the coloring was done at a later date by Harry Roundtree
(Hamilton, RACKHAM pp 47-78, 188). The story concerns Betty Barber's
visit to a fairyland that is to music as Carroll is to chess and cards -
the creatures she encounters there are full of references to musical
notation, scores, composers and the like. Including, somewhat
puzzlingly, several illustrations of a wide-eyed pixie with "LSD"
printed on his smock. Out of print, scarce, and in collectable
condition $150.00
