RAD Rarity of the Week
BEAUTIFULLY BOUND CLASSIC OF ILLUSTRATION
Birket Foster (1825-1899)
BIRKET FOSTER'S PICTURES OF ENGLISH LANDSCAPE,
With Pictures in Words by Tom Taylor.
(Dalziel Brothers, Camden Press, Engravers and Printers)
Routledge, Warne & Routledge, London & New York: 1864
pp. xi, 118, Publisher's ads (2 p.). Thirty wood engraved plates
printed on one side of the page only. The whole on thin card.
4to. All edges gilt and gauffred. Original beautiful crimson
morocco binding (probably executed, like the cloth bound edition,
by Leighton Son & Hodge from a design by Owen Jones), stamped in
gilt and blind. As usual the 'gutta percha' adhesive has dried
out and the book is now more like a portfolio.
Foster was the most successful and highly paid English
illustrator and water-colorist of the late 19th century. He was
never quite satisfied what could be gotten from even the most
skillful wood engravers, and pushed the art to its limits.
"Oddly enough, for one whose name is considered synonymous with
the sixties, Foster illustrated only one book originating within
that decade. Fortunately it is the best of them all - 'Pictures
of English Landscape'... Here his elaborate ultra-sentimental
rural landscapes are more finished, more painstaking, than usual
and there is not a pin to choose between them... " - Percy Muir,
Victorian Illustrated Books.
An elegant copy of one of the great Victorian illustrated books.
