I've got a strange feeling that this would be considered spam.

Yeah, I got that too. Slimey bast#%!s. Paypal is encouraging this from
thier users with the $5.00 referral thing. Not a high price to pay to have
your name shoved in everyone's faces over and over. Paypal wants to be an
internet household name, doesn't want to earn it so they'll buy it.

I got this crap too. In HTML format, to boot! YUCK!

I also fired off an email to ab...@paypal.com
about this message.

I don't blame PayPal. I think their service is wonderful. Their $5
account opening bonus is brilliant marketing and incentive. It is the
responsibilty of it's account members to not abuse the privelege of
their account.

I reported the creep to paypal and ebay. Just got a nice email back from
ebay which reads in part:

"Thanks for your email. You did exactly the right thing by writing to us.
I can see why you would be concerned over receiving email like this.

Unfortunately, the email you received was sent from an email address
that is not in our database of registered eBay users.

The sender may have obtained your email address from another source, or
the sender is registered at eBay under another email address which we
can not identify."

They also suggested reporting this to the sender's ISP, which I did at
the same time I emailed paypal and ebay. For those who want to
report it, the ISP address is ab...@home.com. Include a copy of
the spam with full headers.

I got the spam, too, and recognized several of the names in the
forwarding list as ones which I had seen here (did everyone get
the long string of attachments, also?).

I'm not too handy at reading headers but I did take some time
over on Sam Spade trying to figure out what route the culprit
took. "Buzzpipe.com" does exist but the message id was beyond
me. I really could not determine if the post came from there or
if this was a forgery. "Home.com" exists (as several here know)
and seemed to definitely be part of the real path so I sent an
e-mail to them at the abuse addy I turned up (ab...@home.net). I
really don't know if my complaint went to the right source,
though. This header business can be SOOO confusing!

I looked on eBay and did turn up a user by inserting the letters
in front of the @ sign. That individual also uses "home.com".
But I did not forward the spam post to eBay as I really could
not be certain that the person the search turned up was the same
that sent it or, if the same, even responsible. I got my first
lesson in deciphering spam headers when, unbeknownst to me, my
name had been pasted into the "From" field of a bit of spam, a
year or so ago. You know those friendly "messages" that
sometimes show up in your "inbox" that have you wondering if you
simply forgot that you asked someone to check on something for
you? Yeah. I was one of the unwitting authors of one of those.
Fortunately, I was able to decipher the headers in that case and
got it stopped.

My first reaction to this spam was to forward it to Paypal at
ab...@paypal.com which I did. If everyone who received it will
take a minute to do the same, Paypal will probably take heed.
There are a lot of names on that forwarding list!

Aside from the annoyance factor, what's really bad about this is
that the perpetrator of this spam probably will get a few $5.00
bills back for his efforts. Sighhhh...

Is this the puky-green colored email with two ads on it?
One for PayPal and one for Google?

I reported it to ab...@paypal.com - and then got back
a note telling me that my customer service question would
be answered soon. Seemed an odd reply to an abuse
inquiry, and I'm wondering if opening this email caused
something else to be sent to PayPal?

What I got, Kris, was just a regular e-mail with lots of
forwarded to addresses at the beginning. Below the addys was a
line or two about Paypal and the $5.00. Then there were several
attachments (none of which I opened, might I say). So, just what
DID you get?

lot of unsaved data because I had to reboot to get out of it. I AM REALLY

Now I can't even touch the e-mail to delete it or the one after it because I

ALSO, I use this e-mail ONLY HERE and I do not use PayPal. So, the spam was
generated by harvesting the e-mails in here. OH PLEASE, let me meet this

Damn, Bowser - that's tough.
Hollow comfort, but I just noticed that Damon at PayPals is in the same
list.
I wonder if the jerk spammed him too. Be kind of funny if they got a bug
out of this deal.

I wonder if you can go to your dbx files and delete it there?

Maybe some of the real geeks will come along to help soon, but the ng sure
seems deserted tonight.

I got just what you describe -- but I opened the file attachments
(they were not executable files). In fact, the attachments were
just duplicates of the email itself. No damage done....just that
strange reply from PayPal.

Oh well...maybe I caught the one person at PayPal who felt like

Hello Rod,

Thanks for the info. I have never done that but it made sense. I went into
Outlook and since I did not have anything important in my "inbox", I just
deleated the whole file. IT WORKED...NOTHING THERE NOW.

Where is the unibomber when you need him. (for you NSA people spying on
keywords in e-mail...that was a joke...OK?) I am going to use what little
spare time I have and trace this jerk to try and to get him shut down.

Thanks Again,

That's the PalPal defense, but the nature of the promotion
itself encourages spamming. The TOS prohibits spamming,
but people do it anyway, so we end up getting the spam, and
paypal can stand back and assume no responsiblity.

I don't know specifically about hotmail, but most freemail services
have a box to click on beside the message to select without reading,
at which point you can then click the delete option on your mailtool.
See if you can find anything like that on the screen.

I had something like this happen once. Bowser, if it ever happens again, try
this (it only took me two days to remember how I did it... <g>)

Take the email above the offending email and if it's important, copy it. Do
the same to any emails below the offending email. If there are none, send
yourself one. What you are doing is making a group of emails, with the
problem one, the one you CAN'T CLICK ON in the middle. Then, select the
first email, position your pointer on the third email (bad one in the middle
still) and hit shift while you click the third email. That should select all
three, then you can delete the whole group.

Can't say if it'll work every time, but I did once have an email that locked
up the computer when I clicked on it, and that's how I got rid of it.

Sorry I couldn't remember what I did sooner.

Cynthia,

I follow the plan and it's a great idea.

THANKS A BUNCH

Why? I've got nothing to hide like you apparently do.

With today's email and newsreader programs, you can filter out most anything you
don't want. Sure, I get some spam e-mail, but really not much more than anyone
else, and using SpamKiller, I cause a dozen or two spammers to lose their ISP
accounts for TOS violations each and every week. Very satisfying.

And I'll tell you, the opinion of someone who doesn't have the character or
esteem to use his or her own name in a public forum just isn't as meaningful to
me.

But then, Ron, maybe you've never had someone do something really bad
in your name.
It's farely simple tospoof a name well enough to fool the
not-technical users.

No problem at all. Forging headers in a usenet post is a serious matter. I'm
sure that there are people at your (soon-to-be-former) ISP who are technical
enough to figure it out. You'll be hearing from them shortly.

So, in order to catch one @$$hole spammer, you're going to give every other
@$$hole spammer in the world the opportunity to harvest a couple hundred
people's email addresses? Not real bright, Einstein. Ever hear of <snip>?

Something different. I just read that almost 10% of folks listening to
web-based radio are tuned to http://www.texasrebelradio.com . That's
amazing. And fun to listen to (see "spinning now")
