POPE ONE OF ED CONRAD'S BIGGEST FANS

Just before he died in October 1988, The Father
of Tabloid Newspapers had expressed sheer
amazement about Ed Conrad's discovery of petrified human remains
between coal veins.

Generoso Pope Jr., affectionately know as 'mr. Pope" by his staff at
the National Enquirer which he owned, was well aware that Ed had found
the physical evidence to send the Theory of Evolution to the landfill.

Ed remembers how Generoso's big blue eyes lit up
when he saw and examined the fossils during their private meeting in
his spacious office in Lantana, Fla.
<
"You're a far bigger hero than Galileo, Newton
and Copernicus -- or the three of them wrapped
together," Ed said The Pope had told him.
<
"In other words, Ed, you're a freakin' genius,"
Ed said he had said.
<
That Mr. Pope had spent several hours with Mr. Conrad just before his
death the very next day is
confirmed in this front-page article in the NY Times.

Generoso P. Pope Jr., the millionaire
owner and publisher of The National Enquirer,
suffered a heart attack yesterday at his home
in West Palm Beach, Fla., and was pronounced
dead on arrival at the J.F.K. Medical Center
in Atlantis, Fla. He was 61 years old.
<
Mr. Pope, whose father founded Il Progresso,
the New York City Italian-language newspaper,
bought a weekly newspaper, The New York
Enquirer, in 1952 for $75,000. It had a circulation
of 17,000 copies and a focus on politics, sports,
personalities and the theater.
<
Mr. Pope converted the paper into a tabloid
and turned its pages into a showcase of the bizarre, with tales of
mutilation, sadism, murder and gory accidents.
<
The paper's name was changed to National
Enquirer to reflect its growing national readership and, by the
mid-1960's, the paper was making huge profits and its circulation had
climbed to nearly a million.
