A few friends of mine are collectors of vintage Rolex watches and they
have been buying and selling them on eBay for several years. We spoke
and they told me that they have learned a lot about how to identify
genuine Rolex watches from fake ones, and I want to share some of
their tips with you. Here are some of the things that to look for when
buying a Rolex watch on eBay:
The sellers feedback and reputation. Always check the sellers feedback
score, positive and negative comments, and how long they have been on
eBay. Avoid sellers who have low feedback scores, recent negative
feedback, or who are new to eBay. Also look for sellers who specialize
in selling watches or who have a lot of experience in selling Rolex
watches.
The listing description and photos. Read the listing description
carefully and look for any red flags such as vague or inaccurate
information, spelling or grammar errors, or unrealistic claims. Also
examine the photos closely and look for any signs of tampering or
editing. Compare the photos with authentic Rolex models and look for
any discrepancies in the dial, bezel, case, bracelet, crown, movement,
etc.
The price and payment method. Always compare the price of the watch
with similar models sold on eBay or other reputable sources. If the
price is too good to be true, it probably is. Also avoid paying with
methods that do not offer buyer protection such as wire transfer or
Western Union. You should prefer to pay with PayPal or credit card so
that you can file a dispute if something goes wrong.
The authenticity guarantee and return policy. Always look for sellers
who offer a certificate of authenticity from a reputable source such
as an authorized dealer or an independent appraiser. Also look for
sellers who offer a reasonable return policy in case the watch is not
as described or not authentic.
