I did not know they sold stamps on line. I seldom send anything that needs
them any more, so I buy those forever stamps. I do use the machine as I
don't feel like standing in line for that, but now and then I stop and that
is of course the day the machine is down.
Leave it to the USPS to come up with a website that works like crap. I had
a hard time finding the forever stamps, finally did. Then registered to buy
from them. I wanted to see what they wanted for shipping to buy stamps but
they do not seem to want to say. It had me go all the way to entering my CC
numbers and still would not say what shipping was so I stopped and gave up.
A kid in Jr. High could design a better site than this.
I can't wait till health care is done this way too. Only the Gov. can take
something simple and make it a mess.

vending machines after about a year of having "BROKEN - DO NOT USE"
signs pasted over the coin/bill slots. I guess the local manageress
finally got tired of paying the electric bill on the two very
inefficient space heaters ...

Wrong. As soon as you click on checkout, there's a very
visible statement on the page that says:
"All stamp orders are charged a $1.00 Handling Fee, regardless of the order
amount. "

Ok I did miss that the first time it says :
The Postal Store ships all in stock Domestic orders for stamps and retail
products including Prepaid Envelopes within 1 Business Day and sends them
via Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation or First Class Mail. Shipments
should arrive within 3-5 Business Days. All stamp orders are charged a $1.00
Handling Fee, regardless of the order amount. All other products are charged
standard Priority Mail fees based on weight of the item and shipping address
ZIP Code.
All PSE products are charged a flat Priority Mail rate depending on how many
boxes are ordered as specified in the PSE Shipping Charges table, and should
be received within 7-10 Business Days.
So then it still is not really telling me how much they plan to charge me.
1$ handling fee plus priority mail charges? If the cost of getting a book of
20 stamps was the cost of a first class envelope to put them in, that would
be fine, but since it still is not telling me what they are going to charge
me, just asking me to enter the CC info I will pass and hope the machine
works next time I am by there. I buy a lot of stuff on line and I don't
remember ever having a site tell me enter your CC info and then we will let
you know what we charged you.
I guess their site is just made for people smarter than me, there are
certainly plenty of them around.

.....which were actually run by private contractors.
Ours were removed years ago, and so were nearly all of the others.
I imagine the POs who were the slowest to get the updated systems
and APICs, were the slowest to remove the vending machines....
which were easy to break into.

I had to wade through a lot of pages of stamps to find what I thought was a
very simple, forever stamp. The first many pages were all kinds of stuff for
collectors, then the first forever stamps was a subscription where they send
them out automatically to you.
Even after finding them, and then looking again after Kris said the
shipping was on the page, it still does not seem to really say the shipping
is $1.00.
Both times I got as far as it asking me to enter CC info and it was still
not showing what the charge was so I did not. I guess I am used to the
"dummies" sites that I use. They clearly show your "cart", what's in it,
cost + ship, tax and total for the order. The USPS site was still not
showing me that at least not until I gave them the CC which was what was
made me back out.

stands in, and it has been the best thing I ever have seen most of the time.
Since many people will not use them I seldom have to stand in line any more,
can just breeze up, scan and pay and am out the door.
I hope they put in more. 1 cashier can run 4 stands this way. As long as
you don't need cigarettes or stamps, they work great. For those who have no
where to go, all day to get there, and want to tell the cashier all about
their latest surgery, kids, grand kids, photos and such, there is always a
line or two open, with a long line, for them to wait in for their turn.

You must still shop at the small "corner store" kind of place. The grocery
stores here are all large scale operations. Have 15 or more check stands,
and any number of them are staffed by the needs assigned by some floor
supervisor. There may be a couple open when you walk in, and :20 later there
may well be 10 open and the ones that were there when you walked in are
gone. A lot of the help seems to have regular jobs assigned to them and are
called to man a register when needed, since I see many I recognize stocking
and such also.
There is a little Mom & Pop up the street from me I go to now and then for
something simple, because I like the family that owns/ runs it. I will have
to ask them if they sell books of stamps next time I am in there. If they do
it would be great.
The good part is a book of 20 does last a hell of a long time now. That's
as why I liked the idea of those forever stamps. I was always ending up with
some left over when the price would change.

Damn, you must be at least a minor celebrity then, must be nice.
Many of the regulars at the Fred's I go to seem to know me, but none seem
to know be by name, that I can tell anyway. I have no idea who in the hell
is actually in charge of the joint. Don't ever remember noticing anyone with
a name badge saying store Manager like you used to see. Just seems to be a
few cashiers who are some kind of "lead" or such.
Back before they got the self check, there was one cashier who I would
often run into at a local watering hole when I was working swing. She would
say hi to me by name, which did not go over well with my wife when she was
there. Don't know what ever happened to her as I have not seen her in many
years.

We saw a Safeway last weekend, in Ukiah! They'd all closed
here, in the mid 1970s. My daughter thought it was something new.
It was out closest choice; i generally avoid any store that requires

(Harmons) that's excellent (hand-made artisan breads every day!),
and the ex-Albertsons are going to be an Associated Foods "Fresh

You know, I really don't know. I will look next time I am there now. Could
well be there someplace and I just have not bothered to notice.
I was there today so I got the receipt to check, nothing about who runs
the place at Fred Meyer, or Safeway since I was at both today. The Fred's
does say the cashiers name, even though I went through the self check, so I
am assuming that must be the name of the one who was in charge of those 4
today. It also has about a tree's worth of paper going on forever about
"fuel rewards". How many I have, dates and all kinds of crap. I have no idea
what this is. I know some of them (Fred's) have gas, so I guess they must
give some kind of perks there if you shop with them, but I am seldom near
the ones that have gas.

The big 3 we have here are Fred Meyer, Safeway and Albertsons. Of them
Safeway does seem to be hands down the most expensive. I have one of their
stupid club cards, but I long ago tossed the card, just type in the phone #
assigned to it to get the sale. Every week Safeway sends a mailer with the
weeks ad. They often will have steak at a price that means it must be a loss
leader. That is the only reason I normally go in, buy some of the steak, and
if I see something else on the club card deal that looks good grab that, and
leave.
I have noticed they have a lot of Retarded kids (I am sure this is not the
"correct" term for them any more) working there though and I do like that
they do that. The kids try hard, and always ask if I want help out, normally
with my one bag, and I am glad the store hires them, gives them a chance to
do something and earn some money. I have come VERY close to going off on a
cashier there a couple times when they would make some very disparaging
comments that I could easily hear, about the kids. VERY, VERY unprofessional
for them to be doing that so that a customer can hear them. The kids are
doing the best they can.

When I was young one of my first jobs was at a chain grocery store. A.J.
Bayless. The Top manager would be all the time on the floor, checking,
bagging, stocking, whatever needed doing. They did promote from within, so
the managers all had started out bagging groceries. I have not seen that in
a long time, unless the manager is doing it and just does not stand out.

My Raley's store has a "retarded citizen" -- used to have two, but the
other one left, and I think she moved up, because she was really good.
She worked hard, was always cheerful, and was very careful to do things
correctly. Not the fastest at first, but she built up speed over time.
The guy who's still there is a bit lazy, but very nice, also cheerful
and helpful. He does like to talk, though. ;-)

When I worked for Wild Oats, Mike G and I used to go to
various stores around the country and have "bag offs".
See who could bag the fastest/coolest. I was like
Tom Cruise the bartender tossing tofu into unbleached
canvas re-usable shopping bags.
