Sorry bugleboy, NORTH Richland won CC honor band in Texas....Many people think
Space Center in Houston is very good.
I thought I'd put a little historical perspective on the topic of JH
bands. I came across a fairly old LP in the UT Fine Arts Library from the
1960s featuring "Honor Bands" selected by (I think) Mulmar? Records. I
don't know if these recordings were adjudicated by a TMEA/UIL group or
not.
One of the bands on the record was the Lake Highlands Junior High Band led
by Eddie Green (later of LHHS and UH fame). The program and performances
were quite impressive--all 6 movements of Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy and
Della Cesse's Inglesina March. The quality of musicianship, I felt,
rivals that of many a high school band today.
I also remember that in the not-so-distant past, Marion West (currently
doing wonderful work at Lake Highlands HS) led a strong program at
Richardson North JHS. Their repertoire in the 1980s included El Salon
Mexico (Copland/Hindsley), Holst First Suite/mvmt I, selections from
Scenes from the Louvre (Dello Joio), La Fiesta Mexicana/mvmt III (Reed),
Symphony in Bb/mvmt III (Hindemith), Symphony #2/finale (Malcolm Arnold),
English Dances Set I/mvmt III&IV (Arnold), Elsa's Procession to the
Cathedral (Wagner/Calliet), Hary Janos Suite/mvmts? (Kodaly), Festive
Overture (Shostakovich/Hunsberger),...
I've also heard that Griffin MS (John Benzer, who was a student teacher
under Marion West when I was playing with RNJH!), which feeds into The
Colony HS, has a wonderful band program.
I haven't been following the JH band scene lately--I'm sure the programs
are running strong. I wonder though, if there are JH groups today that
play with the level of maturity/precociousness that educators like Eddie
Green and Marion West developed (and continue to develop at their current
positions)? Is it fair to say that in the past, JH and HS bands generally
played on a higher level? Listening to the LHHS/Eddie Green recordings of
Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra makes me
wonder.

Two which stand out considerably, IMHO, are the Parkhill Junior High
Symphonic Band (Richardson/North Dallas), and the Bedford Junior High
Symphonic Band (Bedford, Texas).
But, that was one sampling.

This is not true.
North Richland was honor band
Sorry SC, a friend called me to tell me to change my posts.
Congrats to Space Center!
I'll mention Bammel Middle School in Spring for the last decade. Mrs. Royal
has had a history of amazing bands, including at least one honor band and
several in the top 5 if memory serves correctly.
I think one of the most charismatic and effective Junior High instructors from
recent times is Bobby Brown. He's moved to HS now of course, but his JH bands
were talented and incredibly devoted.
It was my great privilege to be in his JH bands. Its now my even greater
privilege to be in his high school band.

Also, some people are bringing up past bands. Well there is this band director
by the name of Barbara Prentice-Lambrecht. She is amazing. She started some
programs in Arlington. Her junior high band was the band chosen to recieve the
Sudler cup the first year it was given to junior high schools. While she was
there, they played pieces like La Fiesta Mexicana, Original Suite, Italian in
Algiers and others. I wish I knew for sure of the other pieces they played but
these are a few I know of.
She is now at a middle school in El Paso. In the summers, she conducts the 2nd
band at the Texas Tech Band and Orchestra Camp, and it is a real experience to
be in a group she is conducting. She is one of a kind.
Is she related to Richard Lambrecht, the director of El Paso Coronado?
