Richland middle school is the best junior high band in Texas.
They won the Honor band contest.
I would say that they are the best in the country since everyone know that
texas has the best bands

Sorry bugleboy, NORTH Richland won CC honor band in Texas....Many people think
Space Center in Houston is very good.

I thought it was NORTH, but there is too many richlands to keep track of these

I apologize to all the NORTHERN people

Just finished my senior thesis (yahoo!) and coming out of lurk mode...

I thought I'd put a little historical perspective on the topic of JH
bands. I came across a fairly old LP in the UT Fine Arts Library from the
1960s featuring "Honor Bands" selected by (I think) Mulmar? Records. I
don't know if these recordings were adjudicated by a TMEA/UIL group or
not.

One of the bands on the record was the Lake Highlands Junior High Band led
by Eddie Green (later of LHHS and UH fame). The program and performances
were quite impressive--all 6 movements of Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy and
Della Cesse's Inglesina March. The quality of musicianship, I felt,
rivals that of many a high school band today.

I also remember that in the not-so-distant past, Marion West (currently
doing wonderful work at Lake Highlands HS) led a strong program at
Richardson North JHS. Their repertoire in the 1980s included El Salon
Mexico (Copland/Hindsley), Holst First Suite/mvmt I, selections from
Scenes from the Louvre (Dello Joio), La Fiesta Mexicana/mvmt III (Reed),
Symphony in Bb/mvmt III (Hindemith), Symphony #2/finale (Malcolm Arnold),
English Dances Set I/mvmt III&IV (Arnold), Elsa's Procession to the
Cathedral (Wagner/Calliet), Hary Janos Suite/mvmts? (Kodaly), Festive
Overture (Shostakovich/Hunsberger),...

I've also heard that Griffin MS (John Benzer, who was a student teacher
under Marion West when I was playing with RNJH!), which feeds into The
Colony HS, has a wonderful band program.

I haven't been following the JH band scene lately--I'm sure the programs
are running strong. I wonder though, if there are JH groups today that
play with the level of maturity/precociousness that educators like Eddie
Green and Marion West developed (and continue to develop at their current
positions)? Is it fair to say that in the past, JH and HS bands generally
played on a higher level? Listening to the LHHS/Eddie Green recordings of
Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra makes me
wonder.

My old Middle School, Colleyville Middle School, won the CC state honor band in
1995 I think. The district has added a middle school since then so they are
not as good as when I was there though.

Two which stand out considerably, IMHO, are the Parkhill Junior High
Symphonic Band (Richardson/North Dallas), and the Bedford Junior High
Symphonic Band (Bedford, Texas).

But, that was one sampling.

I heard several very outstanding junior high bands including Parkhill
in Richardson and North Richland MS(Richland) and Space Center in CLear
Creek ISD and Byrd and Reed from Duncanville. Even though Space Center
was honor band.. I heard much more impressive performances from Byrd
and Reed Middle schools. Those kids have a wonderful sound and for a
junior high school the intonation was wonderful..for any school it was
wonderful and the depth of sound was incredible....not to mention the
literature they performed...But Space Center wasn't far behind them,
but I would have to say that those two feeder schools from Duncanville
would have to be among the top junior high bands in TX. But all above
mentioned were outstanding groups in my opinion.

Space center was Honor band and so was North Richland just in different
classes.

Sorry SC, a friend called me to tell me to change my posts.

Congrats to Space Center!

You all have come up with a great list.

I'll mention Bammel Middle School in Spring for the last decade. Mrs. Royal
has had a history of amazing bands, including at least one honor band and
several in the top 5 if memory serves correctly.

I think one of the most charismatic and effective Junior High instructors from
recent times is Bobby Brown. He's moved to HS now of course, but his JH bands
were talented and incredibly devoted.

It was my great privilege to be in his JH bands. Its now my even greater
privilege to be in his high school band.

I would like to listen some recordings or if not listen to the actual
bands perform. People seem to think North Richland MS is good. I want to
hear it for myself and know why.

I dont know for sure, but I find it impressive to see Griffin Middle School
make the honor band at least 2 times in the past eligible years.

Also, some people are bringing up past bands. Well there is this band director
by the name of Barbara Prentice-Lambrecht. She is amazing. She started some
programs in Arlington. Her junior high band was the band chosen to recieve the
Sudler cup the first year it was given to junior high schools. While she was
there, they played pieces like La Fiesta Mexicana, Original Suite, Italian in
Algiers and others. I wish I knew for sure of the other pieces they played but
these are a few I know of.

She is now at a middle school in El Paso. In the summers, she conducts the 2nd
band at the Texas Tech Band and Orchestra Camp, and it is a real experience to
be in a group she is conducting. She is one of a kind.

Is she related to Richard Lambrecht, the director of El Paso Coronado?

Spring being one of the best bands in TX. Wells
MS (also in Spring) is also an extremely talented
band. Both middle schools make up the band at
Westfield High School which is the 5A marching
champs for 1998-99. Mrs. Royal and Mrs. Ramirez
are great band directors and wonderful people.
Mrs. Royal (I think) is also the first woman to
head up the TBA. I was under the direction of
her for 3 years and was in the band that was
honor band runner up in 95-96. That was a great
year for us as well as the following year.

Hey!
Don't forget about the other side of the district. We also have two great
middle schools, Dueitt Middle and Twin Creeks, which feed into Spring High
School. They were second in state. Let's just say, "We have a great school
district!"

has anyone ever heard of John Rucker? I heard he was famous in the eighties.
Please respond.

Not sure that I would consider him "famous" but John Rucker was a good band
director who spent several years in the Pasadena School district (70's) before
going up to Conroe where he stayed for several years during the 80's and maybe
a year or so in the early 90's. I would guess that he has since retired. Hope
this helps.
