I am doing a couple of things here and I need the help of alt.manga.

Lately I had been working on a FAQ for a.m. A "What is manga?" article,
an Alt.manga Welcome, and an alt.manga resource guide. Basically I took
the same stuffs from r.a.a. and do some editing (like replace all "anime"
w/ "manga" :) I also copy and paste some old articles which I think can help
in those area.

They are basically 90% done. Now all I need is to find someone who will
become the caretaker of all those articles, first by correct any spelling
, grammar and factual mistakes I have, may be reformat it, then post it
one time each month to the alt.manga, just like what Conty used to do.

any volunteer? :)

Second, the most obvious missing article from those I mentioned above is
the "alt.manga primer", which would answer the question if someone ask
"Can you recommend some good manga?". Instead of brewing them out by
myself, I think I will take this question to the net and let EVERYONE
answer it. Just remember, when you list your recommendation. Please list
as many facts about that manga as possible. (title, author names, publisher,
cost per book, # of issues, from which manga magazine, BRIEF discription,
<may be I can take them out from the manga list?>, etc)

and do remember, you are making those recommendation to "beginners". some
factors that need to take into considerations are

1. Ease of understanding, (can be ignore if lots of scripts/synopsis exist)

2. Availbility. (won't do them any good if they can't fine them)

3. Culture barrier. (Musashi, Heaven and Earth, The Romance of three
Kingdom, Crying Ryuchi, and the story of Ryun would be bad recommendation
for westerner, but not necessary to the Asians.)

4. Obscure/occult topics should be avoid unless they are VERY famous.
It would be a hard choice if we shall include Oishinbo and Kujako-O.
Firebird shall probably be included if the availbility is better.

here is a brief version of some of the possible titles.
(I am skipping all titles that had/will been translated into English
which means things like Ranma, Silent Mobius, and 3x3 won't be listed.)

Classic
Firebird, Astroboy, BlackJack, Lupin the III, Sukeba Denka, Galaxy Express 999.

Cyberpunk
Orion, Ghost in the Shell, Compiler,

D&D
Dragonquest

Fantasy
Ah My Goddess!, Bastard, Dragonball,
Jojo's Bizzare Adventure,

Horror
Vampire Princess Miyu, Mermaid's Forest

Kid
Chibi Morokochan

Mecha
Patlabor, FSS.

Modern Actions
Gun Smith Cats, City Hunter,

Monster/myth/magic
Dark Angel, Kujaku-O, Saint Seiya,

Romance (drama and/or comedy)
Video Girl Ai, Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange Road, Sesame Street,
Marrionette Generation, Nineteen, BB Fish,

Shojo
Cipher, Rg Veda, Earthian, Genji, Ooka no Monshou.
Kakuen Tokkei Deukarion, Moon Princess

Special Interests (If you want to know more about Japan)
Living Game, Oishinbo

Sports
Touch, Yawara, Slam Dunk, F,

any comments on my selections, disagreements, or additions?
(no, I don't plan to list them all on the primer, so help me pick out the
good one for recommendations. It would be kind of like popularity vote,
I will include the titles that got the most response and delete the rest.)

Hmm?? Nothing listed here are "depressive" or "sad"!! What a refreshing
breakthrough of Cyberpunk! :-)

Well, except GitS which might (just might) be called "Cyberpunk", the rest
are not cyberpunk I think. Orion is a SF/fantasy (I guess it's both) with
material from Buddhism and Taoism. Compiler is just a modern SF comedy,
nothing cybepunkish.

BTW how easy it is to get Compiler here?

>Fantasy
>Ah My Goddess!, Bastard, Dragonball,

AMG should be classified as Modern Life Fantasy. It's nothing like all
the rest listed above which has a fantasy world of its own.

AMG is actually closer to Magical Taruruuto kun (correct name?) than
Bastard or Dragonball.

Actually I didn't see 3x3 Eyes on the list. It's not that hard to find
Sazan Eyes volumes.

Quick & dirty way to get started in manga:

1) Hang out in the bookstore's manga section and just browse (the ones not
sealed in plastic bags).

2) After a while you'll develope your own taste for manga (people don't have
to tell you what you should like), and maybe buy a few copies that you really
like.

3) Find out who the artist is. It's likely that you may find his or her other
works appealing.

4) Look over the shelves again. With more experience with manga you may find
your range of interest expanding.

5) When you're done with shelves, start mingling with the crowd at the magazine
section. It may be difficult to pick up on stories at first, but the point is
again to find out new and interesting artists/titles. Besides, after a while
you may follow the stories better.

6) At this stage you know what you like and want, but the store can no longer
satisfy your needs (yes, even in L.A.). Go to the front desk and ask for
special order forms (give them the name of the title, author, and the publisher
which you find out in zines or from friends). In the mean time check the
shelves and racks regularly for newer developments.

7) When mangas and bills pile, when your daily concern is whether your
shipment had arrived, or if someone else has snagged that last copy from
the store, post on alt.manga and let "Manga Anonymous" save you from this
terrible disease.

Can I de-elect Slam Dunk? ^_^

Hey, how come I cannot find a category for Galactic Hero Legend? ^_^

actually, put aside opinions on Gundam itself. Gundam manga would be a very
bad choice for beginner manga otaku I think. for one thing, where do you
start? the manga is really a part of the Gundam universe, which is make
up of anime, manga, and books, the manga as far as I know, don't cover the
entire Gundam timeline, so you are only getting pieces of the whole
pictures, etc.

of course, there are also things like quality in story and artwork, etc.
I can't remember when is the last time Gundam manga is the hot topic of
either r.a.a. or a.m..... :)

>>Monster/myth/magic
>>Dark Angel, Kujaku-O, Saint Seiya,
>Arion.

hmmmm, I might put that in classic.

>>Romance (drama and/or comedy)
>>Video Girl Ai, Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange Road, Sesame Street,
>>Marrionette Generation, Nineteen, BB Fish,
>Miyuki, Fuyu Monogatari.

I personally like Miyuki a lot. but I think I would left it out of this list,
I don't think for one thing, that westerners would know what the hack is
going on.

>>Shojo
>>Cipher, Rg Veda, Earthian, Genji, Ooka no Monshou.
>>Kakuen Tokkei Deukarion, Moon Princess
>Babylon Tokyo, Towards Tera (may be difficult to find though).

hmmm, I don't know, I think I would recommand one from Clamp, one from
Kouga Yun, and Cipher. I think that cover the top class of Shojo pretty
well,

I am not much of a shojo reader. If any shojo expert out there think by
only listing 3 titles I am missing some "must read" titles for beginner,
then you are more than welcome to make additional comments.

>>Sports
>>Touch, Yawara, Slam Dunk, F,
>Can I de-elect Slam Dunk? ^_^

well, then what shall replace Slam Dunk? how about Dear Boy?

>Hey, how come I cannot find a category for Galactic Hero Legend? ^_^

hmmm, that shall probably be classified as sci-fi, I think I will
also put Compiler and Orion there. I still think AMG is a fantasy. :)

BTW, is there manga for LoGH? I thought there is only the anime mooks.

I can second that. Even for big Gundam fans, majority of Gundam manga
are NOT worth getting. There are few good Gundam mangas but 95% is no
better than fan mangas in terms of quality (In fact, most of them
are fan manga or adaptation of anime for kids).

>>Monster/myth/magic
>>Dark Angel, Kujaku-O, Saint Seiya,

I think Seiya is more of an action manga than myth/magic manga since
it doesn't really have much ties to magic or myth (IMHO, Greek Myth
there serves only only for decorative purpose.)

In any case, it's little bit ODD to put Kujaku-Oh and SS in same
cathegory. (IMHO, of course)

Garasu no Kamen (The Glass Mask) by Miuchi Suzue
Deimos no Hanayome (The Bride of Deimos) by Ashihe Yuuho
Harmageddon Series by Yamada Mineko
Three Sword Story by Nakayama Seika
Yajikita Gakuen Douchyuuki by Shito Ryouko
Yuukan Club by Ichijo Yukari
Boku no Chikyuu o mamotte (Please protect my Earth) by Hiwatari Saki
CIPHER by Narita Mineko
AKIHI by Saeki Kayono (BTW, SAeki Kayono is the wife of Shintani
Kaoru)
etc...

AMG = Fantasy + Love Comedy

>BTW, is there manga for LoGH? I thought there is only the anime mooks.

Yes. Manga version of LoGH by Michihara Katsumi is going on in
Shonen Captain (mag with Guyber).

Yes, the manga of LoGH is drawn by Katsumi Michihara. The character designs
are very different from the anime designs. I do not have them though.

Yeah, I tend to agree. It's hard to classify, though. Maybe
Exorcism/legend/occult manga? Should include Ushio to Tora, Kujaku-Oh,
3x3 Eyes. Or something.

What about manga translators' manga? Does that exist yet? :-)
