"The Japanese can't do decent martial arts manga". Discuss. (^_^)

This quote is from a certain legendary figure of alt.manga. I'd like
to hear proof either way. The longer, the better. ^_^

Gee, I'd never thought Pat would say such a thing....

So written by a legendary martial arts novelist from HK, this style is
called "Dipper Turns and Stars Move". ^_^;;

Yeah, really, Japanese martial arts 'manga' sucks. But who else draw
manga??

I guess you're talking about the 'gladiating' manga we see in Jump.
They DO suck.
It is, however, hard to generalize the category as a whole. I liked
'Kenji' in SS, for example, which introduced readers interesting
features about Chinese martial arts (true or not).

let me guess, it is 2 o'clock in the morning, and you are running out
of things to do? :)

>Gee, I'd never thought Pat would say such a thing....

Patrick is still around, (I saw his post in s.c.j.) but he is not hanging
around ram and am too much lately like one member of Operation. X.

seriously (who me?) the Boxer Boy on S.S. is a good fun-fu manga story,
but then again, depend on your definition of martial arts, Fist of
the North Stars, Saint Seiya, etc. are definitely 'fine' martial arts manga.

patiently await Nov. 21st, when the shipment of AMG #7 and Ranma CDs
shall reach here......

here is my "Drunken Angel looking for Wine' move, sweep! suck! ZZZzzzzzzz.....

Well, I agree 100% there, those titles don't appeal to me in the
slightest. But that quote came from IRC, when it was getting bogged
down in Oss!! Karatebu discussion.

I remember Kenji, and it certainly seemed to go into a lot of
detail, though I never recognised any of the martial arts stuff
as authentic. Then again, I only saw a few weeks of it.

As for Oss!! Karatebu, the styles like Drunken Fist, Praying Mantis
style, etc. are definitely real, though "dead bone" and Lightning Fist
are most definitely not. ^_^ Things like the Shinkyoku-ken, and
Teramoto's ability to harden his muscle, are very close to real Chi Kung
techniques (Chi Kuann Da and Gin Chung Tsao). Whether this is through
research or coincidence, I don't know, Takahashi Kouji always seems to
prefer talking about the voice actors for the OKB videos. (!)

For me, OKB is THE best martial arts manga, it just gets better with
every volume, IMHO. But I'm sure that there's even better stuff around.
I have seen (and like) Natsuki Crisis and Grappler Baki. I haven't
seen Otokojuku and Harajuku Kobushi-gumi, which have been recommended
to me. But I suspect that these are "highschool boys beating the
shit out of each other" manga and not martial arts manga. ^_^

Hong Kong draws a shitload (and I mean it) of kung-fu comics. Comics
come out weekly and are read by a huge percent of the population. Some
come out of here by Jademan comics, the biggest comic company in HK.
Some titles:
Blood Sword
Blood Sword Dynasty
Iron Marshal
Drunken Fist
Oriental Heros
and
The Force of Buddha's Palm.

For the most part these comics are really good, a little corny at first,
bu they evolve...

I don't know much about it so I won't be telling...

>Ta-chan

My favorite.

>Dragon Ball

Now this is the difficult one. I'm afraid it contains nothing
more than a simple fighting scene, nowadays. But somehow kids
seem to love it...I don't understand.

>Otoko Juku

This one sucks, as much as Saint Seiya does. There was nothing
new in those manga. Story and character developed at snail's
pace.

Dragon Ball is awesome...although i've never understood what they're
saying, i still can get the general gist of the story ( i also had a
little help from a friend of mine). the movie is really good.
anybody here at cmu have any dragonball? i'd really like to see some,
even if i've already seen it.
