Greetings all,
I have been using the Universal Waite Tarot for some time, and I am
sure that some of you use the deck as well. It is a pretty solid deck, and
the visualazation is easy. But here recently, I have been feeling a lack of
depth with it. Yesterday I went to the store and browsed around for awhile,
and came home with Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot Deck. It was the deck he
created with Lady Frieda Harris. It is still based on the 78 card idea, with
22 major arcana and 56 minor arcana. But he made some changes to how the
deck was set up. Somw are not too major, such as changing the strength card
into the lust card. While on the other hand, he eliminated the court card of
king and page, inserting prince and princess.
But the major difference is the artwork. It is not midevil in style. It
is much more astral and esoteric. It is a tip for the mind just to look at
them. The symbolism is very thick, and much can be gleamed from each card.
However, let me point out that I DON'T recommend the THOTH deck, if you are
inexperienced with the tarot. I think the waite deck is still the best
beginners deck.

Honorably Yours,
Grey-Wizard
I have tasted the fruit. Now while you sit there praying for my forgivness,
I'm going to see what I can accomplish with my new knowledge

Well, this is a tarot deck thread, so I might as well ask.
I was wondering what people thought of the Rohrig Tarot by Carl-W. Rohrig? I
just got it and am not sure how to proceed on studying it, and haven't seen
anything about it. (It was one of those decks that jumped out and grabbed me
by the throat you see...)

Thanks,
Colbiras

I have never understood this. Thoth's fine for beginners--if nothing
else, it leaves the potential to have less nonsense to unlearn later on.

Jess Karlin has an essay on the Chariot trump from Waite's deck at
http://lonestar.texas.net/~r3winter/chariotser.html
which, among other things, gives some indication of the sheer level of
occultist "blinds" the tedious old bastard engaged in. I'm not aware of
any one source that attempts to do the same kind of thing for the entire
deck.

Best,

Yes I have used My trusty Waite Deck for many Years. Mine is called the
Rider Waite Deck. We carry a few decks on Our homepage including the Thoth
Decks (Large and Small) I have had a little experience with it, but prefer
My deck, while My Brother Uses only the Thoth Deck. He is a Solid student
of Crowley, and swears By the deck as the best. I think however You must
make Your own choice as far as Cards go. We have never sold a deck off Our
website, because the selection process is so personal. We have explored
many decks from Thoth, Waite, Tree Of Life is very interesting, There is
even a Witches Tarot Deck. I really like the Egyptian art work in the
Egyptian deck. Not much on Irish Fairy, but they have a deck as well. Loved
the Lord of the Rings, and King Arthur storys, There are decks out there
for just about everyone. We have sold alot of decks from Our shop (Not
online, but in person) from the mythical to the bare bones decks. There
seem to be two favorites The Waite , and the Thoth decks. I have began the
long process myself of designing a deck. The good news is it will rock, the
bad news is I think it will be about 40 years before I can get all the art
work done for it! Ugh! The Lord of the Rings Oracle is climbing the charts
it is By Terry Donaldson. It is based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the
Rings" . It is not based on the trusted Tarot Methods, but more on a
Karmatic system, and it even comes with a ring :) I don't know about it's
Magickal validity, as I have never actually used the deck, I have only word
of mouth, but I have seen some of the art work and it is very pretty. I
would like more information if any one has it on The Goddess Tarot, Golden
Dawn Tarot, and the Unicorn Tarot. They are listed in Our distributors
catalog, But I have no idea what they are other than what the names
suggest. We have a very small shoppe out in the middle of the Hoosier
National Forrest, so We don't get many actual customers, But We love what
We do! Although if You are thinking about getting into it for the *Money*
I'd suggest another path, one more profitable like begging on street
corners, or collecting scrap soda cans. It is pretty much a selfless life,
You really have to love it to do it, unless You sell out to the
Entertainment industry. Well I'll let You all go for now, I'm talking Your
eyes off here, But Like I said We are pretty much all alone here in the
Woods of Southern Indiana, But We wouldn't trade it for the business
districts for anything. We are in the eliment, and trusted clients
sometimes are willing to travel. We are thinking about putting up a few
workshops on Our page, actual spell kits You can buy the parts from any
store, and apply them to the work shops, just a thought. (FREE)
Blessings friends,
Mardon
