There needs to be a binaries magic group so that magic enthusiasts can
download specials they may have missed, like T.H.E.M.

Do you mean that magicians should become as bad as those who pirate
movies?

Of course, I did. When you copy a show from TV, you have no rights to
distribute it. That's known as violating copyright and is often
referred to as pirating.

Is that more clear now?

Pardon me? You think that I'm trolling because I dare to suggest that copying a
tape recording of a copyrighted show to a binary newsgroup is pirating?

One thing you can take to the bank is the fact that I am not a troll.

What you suggest doing is illegal, immoral and bad for magic. Perhaps you should
find another line of work. You know. Something that encourages illegal ativity.

You still haven't answered the question. I'll repeat it now.

For the record, is it legal where you live to distribute copyrighted material
without the permission of the copyright holder?

You have far more to do in establishing that you have the legal rights of others
in mind when you distribute or plan to distribute the property of others.

The word you're looking for to describe what I am doing here is FLAMING you, not
trolling you. If I were trolling, I'd be the one who started this thread. Which
of course, most here know, was you. This may be the most polite flame you ever
experience on USENET. Trust me on that one.

I've been around this newsgroup from the time it was being formed until this
very day. I've been a magician most of my life performing professionally for
over 40 years.

Ray is NOT a troll, he's practically been a regular here since
alt.magic.secrets inception...and the internet for that matter. He;s
just trying to save you a lot of headaches. If you don't think NBC
takes piracy seriously you're mistaken. The pirated and posted info
can be traced right back to the person who posted it. Two days ago 28
more people were arrested for downloading pirated music, the industry
is getting serious about it. People are being arrested left and right
for taking video cameras into theaters and copying this summer
blockbuster films. Is it really worth all the hassles and worries
just to copy and post something from television?

Alt.magic.binaries was created so magicians could post jpegs and mpegs
of themselves performing magic. Or to post pictures of stuff they
want to sell. Posting pirated material will not get you placed on a
pedestal, you'll only get flammed and someone is bound to let NBC know
about it. It's just not worth it anymore.

You are not going to get help and information by insulting those who
may well have what you want.
If you are going to insult those who make their living by entertaining
at parties, you could make more enemies than friends in this group. Not
everyone can do children's shows, many find children impossible to
entertain or keep the attention of... so show a little respect for
those with that talent.

For the record, not only have I done children's shows, but I have also
done them free for the local school. It's not about me or what I can
do... it's about seeing the happiness and wonder on their faces.
If you want to go round bars, showing off a few tricks to impress people
so you can feel good about yourself, then go ahead... but please don't
knock those who perform to bring happiness to children.

Sir,

A troll is someone who has no interest in the group topic, and posts
messages purely to start filling the group with angry responses. I have
seen them at work in newsgroups, and have seen how they can destroy a group
to the point where genuine users keep away.

Ray may get on his "high horse" from time to time, but he is clearly rather
more than just interested in magic and can add much to this group.

While he has the ability to wind people up, in fact he can pretty much p*ss
people off, it is may not be his intention... just a side effect of his real
interest in magic and his ability to say what he thinks regardless of
whether people will like it.

However, he has a point, making copies and distributing them is illegal. Try
going on a shareware newsgroup, and asking for some "hacks" for using such
software after the trial period without buying it.

No, I was talking to Folderol and calling HIM a troll. Not Ray. Ray is
one of the most responsible members of this rag-tag group and I would
never call him a troll!

There was a telelvison show in England called "Blakes 7." In an
episode where one of the characters ignores the main character, Avon's
warning not to run along a dangerous trail. Avon, walking slowly,
finds her hanging from a root over the ledge, after helping her up she
exclaims; "Don't you ever get tired of being right?" AVON: "Only with
the rest of you always being wrong!"

I think Ray would have understood that.

Close, but no cigar. But I will admit that I was confused regarding
what and what is not permissible under the Fair Use branch of the
copyright law. While it is legal to tape television shows, it is not
legal to post them on-line. I was not aware of the latter rule.

Ray, I am a strong advocate *against* on-line pissing contests,
whether they materialize on a message board or in one of these
newsgroups. Your response to my initial post in this thread seemed
confrontational, so I fired back. It was unprofessional, and I

You know, Bill, anyone can do TV magic.
A camera trick here, a stooge there, a few "bouncers" to eject troublesome
spectators and you can select which parts appear on TV.
Heck, you can even have an audience of stooges so that the TV audience
discount the obvious camera trick.

With TV, you can do the risky ones like "think of a card". If you get it
wrong 20 times before getting it right, 20 people may be disappointed, but
millions of TV viewers will be amazed as they will only see the time you got
it right.

The best performers are those who can work live. No camera tricks, no choice
of which parts get seen, you have to know how to deal with the difficult
spectators, and there's really no point to having a stooge audience.
Entertaining children has to be one of the hardest jobs... they have little
idea of "rules" for spectators, no idea of the concept of tact and a strange
way of seeing things.
Some tricks that work great with adults fail to work with young children,
because they will not make the assumptions that an adult would.

A few days back, I asked my young daughter a question. I cannot remember
what it was, but she came back with one of those incredibly funny child
answers. You know the type, correct but not what you was looking for. Both
me and my Son found it so funny, because I fell into the trap of allowing
that response.

For me, the worst audience has to be wrinklies. I once did a show at
an OAP home... never again.
Hey, nurse, can you check they're still breathing.

I have not seen any message from you calling anyone a troll. I only see two
of your messages in this thread, and the other was a response to Mark Lewis
pleading innocent.
But I know that my server misses some posts. I have changed service
providers, but they all seem to miss some posts.

> I think Ray would have understood that.

I don't know how much of Ray and Mark's banter is just a comedy routine, but
it sure is entertaining.
Imagine them as a comedy magic double act :~)

I think you have the addresses messed up. I'm pretty sure that's my
post (under edward....@verizon.net, I use the verizon.net and the
hotmail.com accounts interchangably.) and I was referring to Folderol.
I would never call Ray a troll, it wouldn't be true and would be very
dangerous besides!

Give http://www.individual.net a shot. They don't carry binaries, but
they're free. I've been using them for years, and haven't had any real
problems.

Not according to my newsreader, which is where the above headers came from.
Do you use Forte Agent? The poster of that message appeared to.

Now you mention your other identity, I find this in my cache...

It is clear that this is NOT calling anyone a troll, but
defending the one being called such.

Too right, he may trample you with his high horse.

I was just funnin' ya!

I did pick up on the general tone. I couldn't resist having a bit of a go at you
just for the sake of my own amusement. Forgive me, for I have sinned.

Oh, and to answer this, I as edward.j.rhodes I use Internet Explorer,
otherwise I use hotmail. (Which is convenient because it gives me the
ability to search for any responses to my posts over the last 24
hours.)

Unfortunately, I couldn't think of a smart-ass response at the time, so you
had to make do with a straight reply.
