Magic Q&A: David Copperfield
by John Wenzel on May 8, 2009
Magic is under attack, and David Copperfield is sick of it. Granted, the
art of illusion has prompted wonder and skepticism ever since ancient
times, but only in the last decade has mainstream TV gotten into the
business of poking holes in it.
“I find revealing the secrets of magic quite
reprehensible,†Copperfield said via e-mail. “After all,
we are all in the same ‘brotherhood,’ and why one
brother would want to hurt another brother in entertainment is beyond
me.â€
Copperfield, the world’s most famous working magician, is
referring to the syndicated MyNetwork show, “Magic’s
Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed,†a weekly debunking of
everything from levitations and sliced bodies to simple card tricks.
Still, shows like “Masters of Illusion†(also on
MyNetwork) also pump some of that romance back into magic, and
Copperfield’s touring schedule proves that people are still
willing to believe.
We chatted with Copperfield in advance of his Buell Theatre shows
tonight through Sunday.
How has this show evolved since it last visited Denver in 2007?
My show is constantly evolving … new tricks are added, old ones
are dropped … so it stays fresh. But it’s the randomly
selected participants from the audience that make it fresh and provide
some of the best comic relief of the day! I have some classics of magic
that will be in the Denver show too, from the dancing ties to the
death-defying fan, where I attempt to walk through the rotating blades
of a 20-foot-high industrial fan.
The last time we talked, about two years ago, you said you try not to
take yourself too seriously on stage. Was that something you had to work
on early in your career or something that came naturally? Is it tempting
to take yourself too seriously when you’ve got so many
peoples’ attention?
Well, “The Music Man†on the Chicago stage was pretty
lighthearted when I was still a teenager, and how could I take myself
too seriously during those formative years when the producers kept
cutting my singing roles and had me adding more magic? That in and of
itself was a humbling experience and made me realize I needed to blend
some humor and lighthearted moments into the show as well as the
death-defying feats.
How do you feel about the health of magic in general, with shows like
“Magic’s Biggest Secrets Finally Revealedâ€
showing some of the methods?
Their “show and tell†is really part of the illusion
itself, unlike the shameless acts of the “masked
magician.†It is the unspoken ethic of all magicians to not
reveal the secrets. Unfortunately, people like him and the Fox network,
who are in the business of creating entertainment — just like me
and other people in the arts — seem to have no regard for this
ethic.
What would you do if they guessed one of your tricks?
I am fortunate to have the resources to have many methods to do each of
my illusions. If someone makes a guess that is in the correct ballpark
as to how I perform my magic, I keep the illusion but change the method.
So, to me, the simplistic guesses in these TV shows and books that aim
to expose are like blanks fired from a gun.
But there are thousands of magicians with families who are less
fortunate. They are hardworking entertainers who cannot afford to have
multiple methods for their illusions. The producers at Fox are putting
these people out of work and affecting their families. The ability to
amaze and create a sense of childlike wonder in an audience, no matter
what the age, is to me, the basic tenant of the art of magic, and this I
believe is still very much in existence. Once you stop
believing… the amazement is gone.
Have you ever had an illusion fall apart in the middle of the show?
I know I have done some wild things over the years, from levitating over
the Grand Canyon and tumbling over Niagara Falls to being suspended from
a burning rope high over fiery steel spikes in straight jackets.
Sometimes looking back over my career one goes, “What were you
thinking?!†I am constantly challenging myself and with that go
with some degree of risk.
On occasion, the tricks that don’t seem dangerous at all are the
ones that harm you. I remember one time I was performing what should
have been a simple rope trick, using a very sharp pair of scissors. I
held the rope up for the audience to see and proceeded to cut it like I
had a thousand times, except this time I accidentally sliced off the tip
of my finger.
I said to the audience, “Excuse me for a moment, I just sliced
the end of my finger off,†and exited stage left. They laughed
hysterically, thinking it was a part of the show, while I headed to the
nearest emergency room for stitches! (I did come back and finish the
show.)
What do you look for in new illusions?
My influences unlike what most people think came largely outside of the
field of magic. Although magic greats like Keller or the Frenchman
Robert Houdan (where Houdini got his name from) were certainly great for
the profession, it was artists like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly have
greatly influenced how I present my show on stage. The key to it all is
to consider nothing impossible in crafting an illusion and then work you
way backward from the final reveal. Of course this sounds easier than it
is — otherwise everyone would be doing it.

Bill, when you buy a computer make sure it has Windows 7. It's
standard with most new computers sold now. Those screens are so small
on those Netbooks, you might want to spend another couple hundred
dollars and buy a decent laptop. And buy a copy of "Windows 7 for
Dummies" some even come with an instructional DVD with the book.
There's a lot to learn when you change over from your MSNTV to a
computer, and it's all good! I'll send you links where you can watch
all your old favorite TV shows. And there's thousands of videos on
Youtube you'll just love; UFOs, Men in Black, Conspiracies, and the
tricks...thousands of free videos of tricks and illusions. You
probably won't leave the house for a month. Just have Bob deliver
your KFC and Pizza Hut to you...oh, and don't forget the malts from
Dairy Queen.
-Leary-
Bill, they call that the "10 Code". Like you said 10-4 means you're
ok, and 10-20 means "what's your location?" Here's a link for you
that has the entire CB 10-Code:
http://www.truckroadservice.com/10_codes.html
If you ever get a police scanner let me know and I'll give you the
police radio codes. Note than digital scanners are very expensive,
almost ten times what the old analog scanners cost. The police
switched over to digital radios several years ago and made the old
scanners obsolete. On top of that they the signals jump around just
to foil scanners; I think they call it "spread spectrum". Too many
bad guys were buying scanners so they had to do something.

Advertise here nowNo stranger to myth vs. reality, the author behind the
Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling, is now attacking Hollywood's
obsession with thinness.
Rowling, herself the mother of two young girls, has decided to speak out
against the unhealthy message that is being sent to young girls: you can
never be too thin.
Using Pink's song "Stupid Girls" as an on-point example, the two have
created an unlikely pair to send a positive message that "what's inside
is much more important than what's on the outside."
I couldn't agree more. As the mother of young children and stepmom to
young adults, I have seen these images of "thinness obsession" cause
untold harm to otherwise beautiful young girls, while creating unhealthy
messages of what's beautiful to impressionable young men.
Our society is getting fatter, while we are being bombarded with
unrealistic versions of what's normal and healthy. Where's the
disconnect?
Hollywood and the fashion industry are mostly to blame. A perfect
example is that whackjob Lindsay Lohan. Once a healthy-looking
attractive teen, she has now become the embodiment of yo-yo weight loss
and weight gain.
She even admitted to having an eating disorder (but of course later
denied it) in an interview that, as far as I am concerned, showcased her
spiral into dangerous self-obsession and solipsism.
Lohan (with a similarly drained Nicole Richie at right) is just one
example, but there are dozens who show a lack of concern for their
health in an industry that forces them to choose between an attractive,
healthy weight and an emaciated, anorexic frame.
Perhaps the disconnect is an inability to achieve this abnormal ideal
causing so much stress that people do the opposite and adopt really
unhealthy eating habits to cope.
But who can blame women for feeling stressed and unhappy about their
weight to the point of paralyzing them into inaction and poor habits?
Dieting is a billion dollar industry in this country and until we come
to terms with what is truly healthy and what is nonsense, it won't
change.
At least J.K. Rowling is using her fame and popularity to try to turn
the tide and for that, she gets some serious credit.

Fantastic article Dawn. Good to see some women speaking up.
I don't understand how Hollywood and the media keeps selling skeletons
when most men will agree that they prefer "meat" on women. I never got
the obsession with thiness. It's not pretty, it looks unhealthy and
becomes to easily obsessive.

She did get millions of children reading books. She does readings in

No argument with Rowling's accomplishments Jeliel³. But they were
essentially for the benefit of JK Rowling and family. This goes beyond
her and is not specifically for her own benefit - unless she is
preparing the way for a new line of clothes...

Hey Dawn,
Nice take on the 'you CAN be too thin' stance. I think Cap'n EO summed
it up great -

Glad to see women who have the ear of our youth delivering this message.

I wouldn't just blame the Hollywood movie and TV industry. Try adding

Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition helps either.

While I applaud most of your article, Dawn, it's unclear to me why you
feel it necessary to label Lindsay Lohan a "whackjob" for suffering from
an eating disorder. Unless you're basing your opinion on something that
hasn't been mentioned here, it seems she is another victim of the
syndrome every sane person is trying to fight. She's certainly not
responsible for creating it.
I'm glad to see Rowling speak out against promoting anorexia as the
standard of attractiveness.
Few are addressing the root causes of this problem, but perhaps if more
and more of us speak out against its devastating effects, some will get
around to uncovering its causes.

13 - Richard Marcus

While it's heatening to hear people speak out against self esteem based
on body size, as Ms. Rowling is doing, as Victor says this is missing
the root cause of eating disorders. The eating disorder itself is a
symptom of the overall disease anorexia nervosa. The key is in the
second word, the anixety and nervous condition that causes the starving
or the stuffing and vomiting of bulimia.
If it were self image alone, how would it explain five year old children
with anorexia starving themselves to death? These attitudes stem form
the belief that they do not deserve to be nurtured, they are not worthy
of any sort of sustanence. Be it emotional love, nutrion or anything it
all amounts to the same thing.
With their self esteem at that level, they will than begin comparing
themselves negativly to what they see around them. If I can look like
that maybe I will deserve love, etc.
In a book called The Deadly Diet the author (whose name has vanished
from my head) outlines what he calls the voice. The voice is that which
repeats the message inside the head of the sufferer that she or he is a
worthless individual underserving of anything.
That voice can continue on years after the eating disorder part of the
disease has been conqured. It's a lot like the alcaholic who has stopped
drinking, but sill acts like an addict. The motivatins and reasons are
still there, they are now just directed in different places.
My wife is a recovered anorexic, but when we first got together she was
still dealing with the voices. It took her about two years to believe
she derserved to be loved, and she still doubts that anything good can
ever happen to her.
The best response to anorexia is unconditional love from the people in
the sufferer's life. The last thing she or he need to hear is anything
that could be guilt inducing.
Wow, as usual I went on and on. Good ariticle Dawn, and the best thing
about it is that it keeps the issue in front of people in an intelligent
manner, not sensationally like the tabloids.
Richard Marcus
p.s. I'll see if I can'f find the author's name to that book, and post
it here if I have luck.

Terence J. Sandbeck is the author of The Deadly Diet: Recovering From
Anorexia and Bulimia. It's available at all the usual portals online,
and I found it in my local library, which means it should be in any
semi-descent one, becaus ours pretty much sucks.
It's a great book for those wishing to understand what a loved one's
going through, and for those who have a loved one who wants to help
themselves. As with all these things nobody's going to get better unless
they want to.

Richard, you and the book you cite focus on the root causes within each
individual who suffers from an eating disorder. While this is important
for successful treatment of the disease, it still doesn't address the
root causes within our cultural values that allow eating disorders to
reach epidemic levels.
18 - Victor Plenty

Honestly you guys, who cares? People speak out against this kind of
stuff everyday... In fact the only people we have to blame for this our
women themselves. You can't force someone to do something, an idea is
only influential if you by into it. Yes yes, I'm sure alot of girls fall
victim to circumstance... then again, don't we all? We can't blame our
own thought's solely on other people.
20 - Dawn
Apr 11, 2006 at 8:15 am
JK Rowling's motives seems to be born from her role as a mother - it has
nothing to do with publicity. She gets plenty of that by merely
existing.
I also challenge ultraprimus' immature missive. Rowling is a successful
author who wrote a fabulously creative story. She will go down in
history as popular as Tolkien and Lewis.

Yet J K Rowling herself routinely spells out how FAT, how very FAT
('looks like a pig in a wig') Harry Potter's cousin Dudley is, and his
size is part of what makes him so ridiculous. Kids will be influenced by
this.
23 - Eric Olsen
May 07, 2006 at 1:29 pm
I believe the overall effect she is trying to create is one of unbridled
appetite and swineishness - should she be restricted from conveying this
in the interest of PC?
24 - Sarah
May 07, 2006 at 2:12 pm
I don't see it as a matter of being PC or not, it's just 2 contradictory
messages that's all. Which one does she really believe? On the one hand
she herself is happy to portray Dudley of the 'unbridled appetite and
swineishness' as a figure of fun, his imposing size as intrinsically
ridiculous, on the other she rails against others in the media for
'promoting', for want of a better word, thinness. I think she's doing
her bit to help this along! If kids want to be thin because of what they
see on TV/read, then equating being fat with being ridiculous only
reinforces the message.

teasing from other magicians finally got to him. Also, the trick he
did, very un-original. It was a standard magic shop items that's been
around for several years. I guess Leno must have put the kibosh on
his camera tricks and made him perform a real trick.
-Leary-
With the recent popularity of Criss Angel and his show Mindfreak on AE,
it seems that this time around the masked magician is heavily targeting
some of the illusions Criss made famous on his show. As mentioned in the
post below, these include “Crushed by a Steamroller,
“Escaping Death by Wood Chipper,†“Walking on
Water†. Are these tricks really magic or are they just clever
ways to fool you? I would have to say that it is likely the latter.
Criss Angel has become notorious for the use of stooges and video edits.
It is likely that the lid will be blown off that secret this time
around.

I love the Masked Magician show. Breaking The Magician's Code: Magic's
Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed. I am old enough to remember when the
first series ran in the 90s. It pissed a lot of magicians off. They even
had a special where they went through a program with a "circle of
faces." And throughout the program they would eliminate them one by one
and the last one left was the masked magician. So they did unmask him in
the 90s.
Now, I don't know if it is going to be the same guy or what HOWEVER I am
still very excited about the new shows. BUT one thing puzzles me? I have
set my recorder to record ALL the Episodes. When it starts up (the
show). You can see that the Masked Magician is going to expose Chris
Angel (sp). It is pretty obvious there with the flying, water walking
and wood chipper thing. But I have not seen these tricks done by the
Masked Magician? Did I miss something? He came on I think Monday nights
for like 3 weeks, then - nothing. I don't see any future broadcasts. Did
someone get to them and make them pull the broadcast before it aired?
What is happening? Because I wanted to see those Chris Angel tricks.

Hey everyone,
I am looking into a penitration effect, I have considered windsheer, and
other types of penitrations. if there are any that maybe I have not herd
of you are welcome to mention them.
I know that jim steinmyer has a version of walking through a mirror, and
craig dickens does too. personally craigs is my favourite, but not sure
if there are any for a little less money, if there isn't than I would go
with craigs. but which ones in your oppion are the best and are there
any others out there?
I also want to go with a builder who can add some touches. I have a
trick in mind that uses the same idea but ends in a vanish, I worked on
the idea from a previous thread that had the same idea, a little
different tho.
thanks,
Magic Mike

There are a lot of different versions out there. The most well known are
:
Jim Steinmeyer's "Walking through a Mirror" (used by David Copperfield)
Wellington's "Mirror Passage" (used by Luis de Matos)
Craig Dickens version.
Steinmeyer's version is heavy and needs a lot of space. Personnally I
would go with Craig Dickens version. It's very beautiful, convicing and
not too expensif.
Oliver.

Just for the record, Steinmeyer's version was used by Doug Henning LONG
before Copperfield got his mitts on it.

Devin Knight has a portable mirror penetration illusion called
Mirrortrate that used to list for about $1200, however, I can't find it
online anymore. He is a member here and you could contact him for
pictures, etc.

I have herd of devin Knights mirror penetration.
Here is another question, which would work better, walking through a
mirror or walking through steel? I can see a big differance as there
could be a promblem with the mirror, if you bump it or drop it it could
break or crack, although metal can dent its a lot stronger.
I do like hennings one where he walks through the center, and you can
see the mirror all around him.

What is your vision of the illusion that you wish to create?
Once you decide that, then you can worry about how to transport it with
out breaking, or without denting.

Well the effect I am wishing to accomplish is a penetration. I like the
look and way of penetrating in craigs and steinmyers.
but the other illusion idea I had in mind I will xplain as best as I
can.
I don't know if metal, or mirror would be better but it defenetly helps
effect wise with a mirror
Magician displays mirror and its on a platform so you can see under it.
then a rectangle with spandex or paper is placed in the centre of the
mirror. magician then turns the mirror so the audience sees a side view,
and the mirror is not thick at all. The magician starts my placing and
arm into the paper/spandex but it does not come out on the other side,
he then continues to walk into the mirror like he is dissappearing into
the looking glass and not comming out on the other side. paper/spandex
is then removed to show mirror unharmed and magician makes an appearance
elsewhere.
thoughts?

Your idea sounds pretty similar to what DC did shortly after walking
through the Great Wall of China. In his live shows he would walk into a
plate of steel which would then be revolved to show all sides. Then he'd
subsequently walk out of it, (using the same apparatus he'd used in
China). It was a pretty effective way to present the very similar effect
seen at the Great Wall.
So really I think you might be after a different effect altogether. You
need a vanish that implies penetration into the mirror or steel. The
effect is not truly of a penetration, particularly if you make an
appearance at another location.

Dani Lary does a vanish that implies a penetration in a mirror (& he
reappears in the audience)
You can see his version here:

If I read your idea it seems to look a bit like David Copperfield's
version of "The Fan" from his TV special "Unexplained Forces".
He and his female assistant walk through a cabinet into the turning
blades of the Fan, smoke coming out of the other side and when the
sidestores of the cabinet go up again, he's gone only to reappear on a
platform in the middle of the audience.
To make it look more like a penetration, you could, once gone into the
mirror, have the mirror taken out to revolve it or to place it on an
other platform and come out of the mirror again on the second platform.
But I must agree Frank's statement, that it is more of an translocation
than a penetration.

I was going for the effect of a disolving into the mirror, I am walking
intro the mirror and then showing that the mirror is indeed still solid.
I have seen Copperfields fan, but he uses a shadow kind of effect, I
want to make mine very visible and the mirror very thin. I could also
have a mirror on the other side of the stage and come out of that one,
making a translocation. when I was first thinking about this it was not
going to be a translocation, but the idea sounded better, of course it
is a peneitration...in a way. I just walked into a mirror. and its
completely unharmed!

Strictly speaking, penetration requires coming out the other side.
Otherwise is actually more of... an absorption. DC's patter about
diffusion was most effective in his Great Wall/ walking through steel
plate illusions.
For a visible effect you may need to think more along the lines of the
Osmosis illusion. I'm guessing it won't be inexpensive, no matter what
you decide to use!

Yeah it kind of is an absorption, but I would want it so I can make one
adjustment to make it into a penetration.
I was thinking about osmosis, but am thinking a little different. the
more inexpensive would be the use of black art, but I have a couple
other ideas, including one that can be used to see it surrounded. and
still very visual.
I do like the idea of the absorption into the mirror though, I couldn't
remember that word "absorbtion" that was one of the words I was looking
for.

Using a shadow or not doesn't change a lot of the effect. I think you
need to make very clear what you want the audience to see. Don't make it
too confusing. Your illusion, as every effect needs to have a short plot
(pitch) that discribes what the audience sees in only one sentence.
Anyway, here another thought : Rand Woodbury had an illusion in his
first Illusionwork Book called "Ex-Squeeze Me Illusion".
Maybe this cuold help you to work on your idea. Only inconvenince, the
"mirror" isn't very thin at all.
Oliver.

Using or not using the shadows dosen't change the effect alot, but it
certainly does change it. Just like cutting in half, there are many:
death saw, thin model sawing, laser, modern art. same effect, yet they
seem completely different.
my short plot pitch is- I walked into a mirror vansihing leaving the
mirror completely unharmed.
I will search up the book and research ex-squeeze me, see if I can use
it as a base idea.
