Do I need to turn on something, either in Dreamweaver or my browser,
to detect syntax errors? Right now, if I use a bracket ] instead of
parenthesis ), I get nothing blank page with no source code. I've
tried this both IE and FireFox. FireFox's Error console has nothing in
it.

No dreamweaver does not provide this. There are a few programs that
do. What you can do is use the balance braces feature. This will
highlight the brackets that encapsulate the area where the cursor is.
If it is going too high/low or not enough, you are missing some
bracket.
