I may buy my first Mac this week. What are some good inexpensive software
for Mac? Specifically anti-virus and productivity (word processing,
spreadsheet, e-mail)?

Thank you,

Kevin

Depending on the Mac model you buy, your Mac may come with AppleWorks
pre-installed... if so, give it a try.... it's an OK set of word
processor, spreadsheet, draw/paint, etc. applications. And the price is
right.

Also, just last Tuesday, Apple released iWorks-- a word
processor/presentation bundle for US$79.

No anti-virus needed. There are currently no (count them, zero) Mac
viruses 'in the wild'.

That could change, but for now it's safe to be a Mac user online without
antivirus.

Appleworks comes with it for productivity software. Norton for Anti
Virus, Netscape for email and web browser. You might want to buy
Photoshop Essentials 3.0 for touch uo of photos and pictures($99)Tech
Tools 4.0 for disk maintenance and repair. What model are you thinking
about for what uses?

Kevin,

If you need an office suite that is compatible with M$ Office, try Open Office
at http://www.openoffice.org/ .

OS X has a firewall built-in... it can be enabled using the Sharing
system preference's Sharing tab.

Note that the checked items are the services that are allowed through
the firewall, not the ones being blocked... everything EXCEPT what is
checked will be blocked after you click the Start button.

It's incoming-only; because spyware apps 'phoning home' is not an issue
on the Mac, this isn't as problematic as it is with Windows' built-in
(incoming-only) firewall.
