Install new HD in G5

I'm new to mac, mostly use Linux. I got this nice G5 with everything
including manuals and 2 OE disks. One has 10.4 and the other 9.2 I did
everything the manual says. Use disk utilities, erase disk, place install
disk in dvd, hold down (option) key and follow instructions.

All I get is a gray screen with a padlock, a long bar and a box with an
arrow. All the articles I have Googled about HD install on a mac has ever
mentioned this. I was wondering if I have the only mac with this screen.
If anyone knows what that is or how I can install os X I would appreciate
it. Thank you for any help.
