LUCKY MOJO CURIO CO.CATALOGUE
BOOKS ON SPELLS, HOODOO, AND MAGIC

The Lucky Mojo Curio Company was founded in the belief that
there is a strong need in the community for knowledge about
traditional Southern-style hoodoo and conjure work. The books we
sell are primarily reprints of booklets that were popular with
African-American root doctors and hoodoo practitioners in the
1920s-1950s. We can not guarantee that these books will
teach you to how to draw money, luck, and love or help you cast
off evil influences, but we have confidence that you will truly
appreciate the esoteric information they contain.

To read about hoodoo and how these booklets helped shape its
development, go to the free, illustrated, non-commercial Lucky W page

Books are listed alphabetically by title.

Aunt Sally's Policy Players Dream Book
by Aunt Sally
Originally published in the 1890s; this is a facsimile reprint.
A curiousity of hoodoo gambling magic, the text consists of four
separate lists of objects and situations found in dreams with
interpretations and lucky numbers for playing Policy, an illegal (and
now obsolete) "numbers" game once popular in the black community. Old
spiritual supply labels (as well as blues songs) often contain coded
messages expressed in numbers from this book; there was even an Aunt
Sally's Dream Incense for gamblers. Also included is a reprint of a 19th
century French divination system called the Oraculum or Book of Fate.
122 pages (plus ads), trade paperback. $3.50

The Master Book of Candle Burning
by Henri Gamache
Originally published in 1942; this is a facsimile reprint.
The classic text on hoodoo candle burning in the pre-Santeria era;
covers everything you need to know about colour symbolism, figural
candles, and altar layout. The author was beyond doubt the best early
20th century writer on hoodoo.
96 pages (plus ads), trade paperback. $4.95
illustrated historical background on the role this book played in the
development of hoodoo candle burning rituals can be found at the

Papa Jim Magical Herb Book
by Papa Jim [James E. Sickafus]
Originally published in 1985; this is a 1996 reprint.
Papa Jim runs a "voodoo, hoodoo, santos, santeria" spiritual
supply store in San Antonio, Texas. His spelling is eccentric, his
grammar is idiosyncratic, and his information is top-notch. He also
writes about himself in the third person: "Papa Jim is a very famous
healer, root doctor, and card reader. [...] Papa Jim is from a Maumee
Indian father and a german Indian mother. Born at the fork of two great
rivers in Indiana. [...] History will tell of the greatness of Papa
Jim."
48 pages, saddle-stitched. $4.95

Protection Against Evil
by Henri Gamache
Pub. 1946 as Terrors of the Evil Eye Exposed; facsimile reprint.
Gamache collected folklore from around the world; this booklet
contains African, European, Indian, South American, and Caribbean evil
eye lore, packaged for consumption in the African-American
market.
96 pages (plus great old-time ads), saddle-stitched. $4.50

Pow-Wows or The Long Lost Friend
by John George Hohman
Originally pub. in 1820; facsimile reprint of an 1890s edition.
Translated from German sources, this is a non-pareil compilation
of 18th and 19th century Catholic folk-magic that is popular among both
white hexmeisters and black conjures in the South.
96 pages, saddle-stitched. $4.50

Secrets of the Psalms
by Godfrey A. Selig
Originally published circa 1940-45, eighth printing, 1990.
Here is an unusual and provocative item -- a Kabalistic work,
translated from old texts by an obviously observant Jewish author -- and
marketed extensively to the African-American community in the 1940s
through ads in black-owned newspapers such as the Chicago Defender. Each
Psalm is prescribed for a different condition, from ending slander and
drunkeness to drawing money and luck. Among Christian hoodoos, burning
"condition" incense while reciting the Psalms is very popular. All 150
Psalms (King James Version) are included in the book for easy reference.
88 pages, saddle-stitched. $4.95

The 7 Keys to Power
by Lewis de Claremont
Originally pub. circa 1940s (WW II); this is a facsimile reprint.
Widely advertised in black-owned newspapers of the 1940s,
this occult self-help book presents the European ceremonial-magic
traditions that entered into 20th century hoodoo.
96 pages (plus great old-time ads), saddle-stitched. $4.50

Spiritual Cleansing
by Draja Mickaharic
Originally published in 1982; this is a 1996 reprint.
A fabulous collection of recipes from Central and Eastern European
Catholic and Afro-Caribbean Santeria sources for herb baths, floor
washing rites, and egg magic to rid the home of curses and protect
family members from the evil eye.
96 pages, trade paperback. $7.95

Voodoo and Hoodoo
by Jim Haskins
Originally published in 1978, reprinted in 1994.
Ignore the title and the cover illustration; this book is about
hoodoo, not voodoo, and it collects Southern conjure lore observed by
the author during the 1960s-70s. If you are looking for an introduction
to hoodoo from a modern urban black perspective, you will really enjoy
this journalist's examination of his "roots." Because of a few serious
botanical errors in the otherwise exemplary text, we enclose a one-page
errata flyer with every copy at no charge.
228 pages, trade paperback. $8.95
