Anyone out there have the instructions for changing the combination of a J &
J Taylor safe? My dad doesn't remember the old combo.... thinks it's only 2
numbers... the safe is open right now, and we have the key, so all I need
are the instructions. The lock and handle as separate, and the lock has a
star at 12 o'clock and a line at 1 o'clock.

Thanks

I'd suggest to call a locksmith with safe and vault experience.
If you make a misteak and lock the box shut, it's far more
expensive then the cost of the combination change.

Don't need to worry about that..... the safe was drilled in the past and
never repaired. We want to get the combo changed and working before we go
to weld the hole shut and replace the fireproofing.

if that the case ? there is a good chance you may need to do
more than just change the combo and plug up the hole. you
should have a professional look at what all you have there.

I don't know much of anything about safes but I can tell ya most of these
guys here only play locksmiths on Usenet. 10 to 1 you can't find anybody
than can give any type answer.

Not gonna find a professional here either. Nobody here even knows how to
change the combo. The only guy here who posts much real info says he's not a
locksmith. There's some irony.

LOL he'll have to. Nobody here knows. That's something probably only an
actual real working locksmith would know how to do.

So if you don't know much about safes, then just what are your credentials
for judging if, and what kind of a locksmith someone may be?

If you are not part of the solution, you are not dissolved in the solvent.

I notice nobody has answered the question yet. Nobody on here answers much
of anything in the way of locksmithing related questions except one or maybe
two guys who look like they do it to piss off the nuts who think
locksmithing or locksmithing wannabes are supposed to belong to some kind of
secret club.

Somebody call me????
;)

It's most probably a key change lock. (And not your average, run of the
mill change key either!)

If the combination just needs to be obtained and not necessarily changed...
best bet (for an amateur - other than getting a professional) would probably
be to just remove the back cover, dial all the gates under the fence and
write down what the numbers are.

Try the combination at least five times - in a row - successfully - BEFORE
you close the door!

To change the combination of a J&J Taylor safe you need a combination Key that fits on the inside of the locking mechanism...

I have key, already removed lock from safe door, looking for instructions how to set or retrieve existing combination.
