Now let's see. If you really are a locksmith who opens safes, you'd already
know about an auto dialer. You might even subscribe to the magazines that
advertise this machine. If you ever went to a trade show, you would have
seen one and heard the price. If you're just curious, no one would sell you
one anyway.

Sorry.

BTW, $2,500 is about right and you'd better be ready to leave vital organs
behind proving you have a legitimate need for one.

I've never heard of these before. How does it work - just try all
possible combinations according to some pattern?

(No, I don't have a safe that I want to open - just curious about
the technology)

Building the silly thing is straightforward. Programming it is where
there's room to get somewhat clever.

Note that you're talking about operating times on the order of
_days_ of continuous operation, so it's very much a last-ditch

and special-purpose tool. Useful to a professional safe tech
whose reputation is on the line, but most folks ought to just
hire an expert, and most locksmiths have better places to
invest that kind of cash.

an alarm.....

I have one of the ITL 1000 original auto dialer that I put the new style
dial clamp and base on so the dial does not need to be drilled and tapped to
mount the dialer to it. Either way the automatic dialer is good for no more
than 50% of the safes that it is sutible for use on. I had this for 10 years
now, spent $600-800 on the dial clamp upgrade and still think that it is
only an expensive toy. Anybody with a fat wallet and credentials really want
one? BTW Did I mention that 30 hours is the minimum cycle this thing
runs?

Yep. There have been versions that have claimed to be able to do better
than that, at an order of magnitude higher costs; I'm unconvinced but
some folks swear they've seen one demonstrated.

A human expert can often do better. Not always.

I've been tempted just to order the mechanical part, throw together
appropriate interface circuitry, and write a program for a surplus PC
to drive it...

Note that electronic locks are essentially immune to this; as soon as
they detect an attempt to guess the combo, they shut down. You might
still be able to exhaustively dial combos, but at three attempts per
ten minutes or so, well... work it out for yourself.

Kyle,
I have been using The Name "Keyman" for my Signature everywhere
on this N/G for a while.
Our Post will get mixed up if there are Two "Keyman" s and our views will be
mistaken.
.
Could I please ask you to maybe, drop the " " from your Signature and add
something to make them different. if you plan to hang around this N/G ???
It would help a lot.
