I'm guessing something is FUBAR.
I'd try pushing the shackle in, and then see if it turns.
Clearly a change key is not very worthwhile if you can't enter a
new combo.....
(My experience is with only the 8077 model, the 88 had been
banned by then...)

I presume you don't have the instruction card. You're in luck.
I quote from mine.....
Sargent & Greenleaf, Inc.
Rochester NY 14621
Since 1857
DO NOT DESTROY
This is your direction for operation.
The combination of this lock is set on 10-20-30 after final
inspection at the factory.
To Unlock:
1. Turn LEFT stopping when 10 is aligned with the index the FOURTH time.
2. Turn RIGHT stopping when 20 is aligned with the index the THIRD time.
3. Turn LEFT stopping when 30 is aligned with the index the SECOND time.
4. Turn RIGHT stopping when 00 is aligned with the index the FIRST time.
5. Pull the shackle out.
To Lock:
1. Push shackle in an dspin dial several times to LEFT.
To Change the Combination:
1. Dial to unlock and pul shackle open.
2. Slide changing button up, and hold while closing shackle.
3. Using changing index (that's the small index pointer 3 ticks to
the left of the normal index pointer) dial old combination as
in steps 1 thru 3 above.
4. Insert changing key in back and turn clockwise.
5. Using changing index, dial new combination of your choosing
as in steps 1 thru 3 above.
6. Turn change key back and remove.
7. Using opening index, dial new combination as in steps 1 thru 5 above.
Caution:
Dial numbers precisely - do not turn back to regain a number run past;
redial entire combination. Before setting a new combination
WRITE IT DOWN. Be sure that in changing a combination all numbers are
set to the changing index. A frequent error is to set the first
number to the changing index and the next number to the opening index.
If the changing key hole is open the lock can be reset. If the key
hole is closed and the combination lost, the lock is valueless due to
its security design.
General:
Read all instructions completely thru before changing combination.
In selecting a combination of numbers, avoid exclusive use of 5's
and 10's. Distribute numbers over entire dial, i.e., 6-36-14.
You're welcome.

The answer is yes, it is possible to open the lock, reset the combo,
and have a really nice padlock out of the process.
The answer about anonymous posting is that if you are hiding behind
something you won't get the info...at least from me. Try a repost
with a name and expect better results. Sorry.
