This is the second time in a week my computer's been infected with spyware,
the first time was Zenon or something similar which I managed to remove,
and now it's Surf Sidekick which I can't remove no matter how hard I try.

I've already tried Hijack This! as suggested by a number of websites, but
each time I delete the several entries they re-appear instantly. Ad-Aware
seems to have gone commercial and my reference file won't update since
last October, and SpyBot made things worse by freezing my computer up with
hundreds of alerts about attempted registry changes.

How the fuck did it get on my computer? I don't recall having installed
any new programs recently, and my previous problem with unauthorized
download/installation seemed to have been fixed with the SP2 security
upgrade. Is there a newly discovered vulnerability in XP? And how do
I get rid of Surf Sidekick and is it malicious other than forcing me to
view ads? And isn't there any legal remedy for assholes who do this? It
seems to be about as ethical as breaking into someone's house and erecting
a billboard in their living room without their permission.

Also, I've downloaded several copies of Linux images that fit on a single
CD-ROM in an attempt to boot off CD into Linux to remove the files
manually, but even though F12 offers an option to boot off CD, it never
does and always boots directly into Windows. Why?

Are you using Internet Explorer? That is usually the problem when you
get spyware. Either that or file sharing. You should use Firefox and it
will prevent most spyware from installing:

How did you burn the images? Did you just copy the ISO files to the CD,
or did you use a program to make a disk from the image? A list of
programs is here:
http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm

You can't just copy the ISO file onto the disk as if they were regular
files.

After you use Knoppix to save your files, why not just install Linux? Try
SLAX or Ubuntu. You can still run a lot of your windows programs under
Linux. No more spyware...

If you want it fixed and fixed right then follow my directions. Ignore
anyone else. This is a 2 part fix. After you do everything listed below then
post your HJT log so I can see it. Uninstall your old corrupted versions of
Adaware and spybot then download, install, update and run all of the
following.

Ad-Aware
http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/aawsepersonal.exe

Spybot search and destroy
http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/spybotsd14.exe

Ewido Security Suite Trial version
http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/ewidosetup.exe

Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta1)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=321CD7A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en

If none of the above fixes the issue then download Hijack this, run it, save
a copy of the log file and cut and paste it back here to this group so that
I can analyze it. Ignore anyone especially the troll Leythos, who will tag
along a nonsense post to this message, who tells you to post it elsewhere. I
need to see it not them.

If you haven't already figured out how to get it off, download KillBox.
What you have to do is replace all those files with fake files and then you
will be able to successfully delete them without them coming back.

Have you ever tried Firefox? I used to get lots of spyware from using
Internet Explorer. I never got any spyware after using Firefox. Also
Firefox has over 600 free extensions that you can use to expand its
features. You can even write your own extensions. Firefox is open-source
and everything is free. You can easily change the look just by adding a
simple CSS file.

If you make web sites, Firefox has many tools that can help a lot, such as
the Web Developer Toolbar Extension, the HTML Tidy Extension, the
MeasureIt Extension, the Colorzilla Extension, and much more.

Internet Explorer is a terrible program and it is the reason why most
Windows computers have spyware on them. If you get rid of Internet
Explorer most of your regular spyware problems will go away.

You can download it here for free:

i doubt that's it -- he mentions pressing F12. In most BIOSes that have
an F12 option to get a list of boot devices, you don't typically need to
configure the BIOS boot order.

I think he probably just burnt the CD wrong, and instead of burning a
bootable ISO image, he burned a big ISO *file* to the CD.

For example (using Nero -- I found these with google, can't verify ther
veracity):

You must work for Microsoft. Firefox is without a doubt the best browser,
and it is free. Do you realize that Microsoft ripped off a lot of the
features of Firefox for version 7, as well as completely ripping off the
web developer toolbar? They still will not get it right though. IE is
not a good browser or a safe one and never will be.

Firefox is innovation. It is the cutting edge of
browser technology. There are more than 600 Firefox extensions
freely available. There is no ActiveX in Firefox so it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer. That is why if you switch to Firefox you
will get rid of most of your spyware problems.

Also, it is open-source and that means that anyone can look at the code
and easily make modifications to the browser to customize it in whatever
way desired. If you know any CSS (which is very easy to learn) you can
make a CSS file and customize the look of Firefox with just a few lines of
text.

Either you have never tried Firefox, or else you never learned how to use
it (it has a lot of features and several books have been written about
it). I don't know anyone who has seriously tried Firefox and not preferred
it over Internet Explorer.

Firefox is recommended in USA Today:
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/computersecurity/2004-09-08-zombieinfect_x.htm

Firefox is recommended in Forbes:
http://www.forbes.com/2004/09/29/cx_ah_0929tentech.html?partner=tentech_newsletter

Are you telling me the people at Forbes are idiots?

It is also one of the top 10 products of the past 10 years on CNET, along
with Google and the iPod:
http://www.cnet.com/4520-11136_1-6312246-1.html

The fact that your vocabulary is limited to "idiot" and "retard" makes me
suspect that you either work for Microsoft or are still in high school.
If you want to have a serious conversation about getting rid of spyware
you will have to do better.

No system is 100% free from security weaknesses. Firefox has very very
few weaknesses compared to Internet Explorer. The day I installed Firefox
was the last time I ever had spyware problems. That is why I recommend
it as a solution to spyware problems. After I installed Firefox I only
had to run AdAware, Spybot S&D, Ewido, Norton, every 2 months and they
still never find any spyware or viruses. The first thing I do when I
clean spyware and viruses off someone's computer is to install Firefox.
It's the best initial line of defense against spyware.

I'm surprised that so many people are ignorant about their browsers. Are
you on the IE development team or something? Sorry, nothing personal but
it is a crappy product that is full of security holes and copying Firefox
for IE 7 is not going to help. Where do you think all those new features
for IE 7 came from? Tabbed browsing, integrated search bar, warning bar to
block downloads from web sites, web developer toolbar -- that all comes
from Firefox. IE is only popular because it comes bundled with Windows,
not because of any merits that it has.

You have got to be kidding me...

Someone asked a question about how to get rid of spyware and I told them a
way to fix it -- something that has worked on dozens of computers that I
have helped people with, including my own. There have been no rational
responses; only words like, "idiot" with no explanation. So I
have explained myself further. Why are there so many rude people on these
newsgroups? It's really a sad thing. One would hope that computer users
would be using newsgroups to help each other out, and that is usually the
case in most of the newsgroups I've been in. I don't know why people here
are so rude.

I read all these posts...maybe I missed something but I think not. I don't

IMO.

I agree with fitz. I have used both IE6 and firefox. I must admit that IE
sucks but it is the most readily available since it comes bundled with
Winblows...oops, I meant Windows. The only issue I had with firefow it that
it would block some of my most frequented sites.

I have since started to use MSN Explorer and I hav had no problems.

Have you tried adding the Firefox PrefBar extension, so you can spoof
the UA string from Firefox to Internet Explorer?

Sometimes it's better to just warm up the killfile and be done with them.

I knew you wouldn't use the killfile. You like to argue too much.

You don't remember this?

Rebecca,

You seem very unhappy. Your method of
interacting with people is called "bonding through negativity" and it
makes for bad relationships with your fellow human beings. Have you ever
considered that you would be happier if you weren't so confrontational?
You just sit behind your computer, insulting people from behind the
protection of your screen. I can't tell if you are 15 or just act like
it. I don't mean to insult you (despite your insults) but I think you
should take my advice and develop your personality a little. It's not
healthy to sit around trying to make friends or get attention by putting
other people down (bonding through negativity). Give kindness and you
will get it back.

*plonk* means that you have added me to your killfile. You aren't very
consistent:

You might try a regular activity like swimming or yoga. That would relax
you and get rid of some of that frustration that you have. I think
that you would find Yoga to be very beneficial.

Becky darlin', if all you're going to do is plonk, how about trimming
out all the other 50-60 lines so we don't all have to scroll to see your
latest plonkage?

(Pretty soon now, there will be nobody left for you to read. <g>)
