Hypothetical question. If I was to install Debian with a Gnome
interface would I notice any difference between Ubuntu other than the
loss of the Synaptic Package Manager?

In theory no, but in practice you will have different wallpapers, but for the
usage of gnome2, it will work the same regardless Linux distribution or if you
use a Unix like OpenSolaris or *BSD.

What do you mean "loss of the Synaptic Package Manager"? It's in Debian
too. Aside from the differences in themes, precious little difference. I
have a Ubuntu and a Debian on my desktop and switch frequently from one
to the other via a KVM switch. Sometimes, I momentarily forget which one
I'm on - but then I'm 64 ;)

Thanks for that I'm 64 on my laptop, 32 on Desktop. So the Synaptic is
Debian. The more I learn the more I find out how clueless I am.

Debian is such a good distro. It seems that most of the things that I
liked so much about Ubuntu are just taken from Debian.

I changed the the wallpaper and colours on my Ubuntu I did not like brown.

Have you used OpenSolaris? If so does it use rpm or deb or something
else.

Yes, I have played a little bit with OpenSolaris, built a VM image at work for
customers to use. It don't use any of the rpm or deb package managers, it uses
a tarball for binaries, a bit similar to what you have in BSD.
