Smoothwall has a bad attitude

Recently, Comcast has implemented some changes, on a few of their newer
nodes, to their DHCP protocol, to frustrate firewalls. After trying an SMC
Barricade and a Multitech Routefinder, I decided to give Smoothwall a try.
Finding the diagnostic screens uninformative, I informed Smoothwall of the
problem, with some gentle suggestions for improvement.

I was shocked at the vitriolic response of gratuitous insult of developer
"Richard", posted to their support listserv.

Apparently, Richard is stretching the GPL license to the breaking point.

Consequently, I will switch to IPCop, another GPL project, supported at
http://www.ipcop.org/ . It's supposed to be a much better product.

My reply to Richard:
1. If I appear rude, it is not intentional.
2. You are apparently sensitive to helplful criticism.
3. I acknowledge that I have no warranty and no rights -- I am simply
providing information to help you -- if you wish -- to improve your product.
4. Your statement that you would delete the diagnostic information is
indicative you have a severe attitude problem.
5. Your statement that I have no point is contrary to the terms of the GNU
public license. Indeed, you stretch the meaning of that license to the
extreme.

Before you reply again as you have to me, you may wish to consider how your
reply would appear in the various usenet forums on linux.

Whether he was a jerk to you or not, you are really making yourself
look like a two year old. Christ, if I posted to Usenet everytime

I'm inclined to agree with you but this is hardly the first time
this has occurred. The easiest thing to do is just blacklist
smoothwall altogether and let the developer sink in his own
cesspool.

Already being done. Smoothwall has been blacklisted by many private
and corporate users. They have switched over to other more reputable
firewall products like IPCop (www.ipcop.org) or commercial. I have
personally removed over 300 smoothwall installations (I stopped
counting some time ago) and replaced them with IPCop, much to the
delight of the end users. Many have said they would never donate,
little own buy a product from someone so abusive. Trust is a big issue
with security products. Smoothwall has proven time, and time again,
that it can't be trusted due to it's author's attitude and management
of smoothwall. He's just ticked off too many people around the world.
IPCop seems to have a very promising future. I can't say that about
smoothwall.

I agree. If Richard of SmoothWall doesn't know how to communicate to people
then he shouldn't be participating in the open source community; he's already
pushing the GPL to its limits. Let SmoothWall project die from the leaders lack
of manners. Open source is about sharing and co-operation.

IPCop sounds like a good project to me.

In article <3c8cf...@news7.fast.net>, sorrynospam@here says...

yeah been looking at the smoothwall mailing list and he is pretty
obnoxious. As for IPcop being a toy, hmmmm..... pretty much identical to
sw gpl except it's got ext3 :)
If he intends sw to be a taster for their commercial product then being
abusive to people on the mailing lists is not a very good advert.

Hello Robert,

I have to say I'm appalled by these responses. I've been using Smoothwall
for a little over a year now and have been quite happy with it. In fact, I
was very close to buying their server product for use at work. BUT after
reading these responses, I'm truly disgusted. I had a quick look at ipcop
and it's actually forked from Smoothwall anyway, don't know how he can then
claim it's a "toy".

Thank you for bringing this to our collective attention.

Cheers,
Peter.

You'd see more like this if you subscribed to the mailing lists. Not
very good advertising to say the least, considering its meant to be a
"taster".

Exactly.....
IPCOP is almost identical, except for the fact that it has ext3 and it
looks like it will be updated more than smoothwall gpl.
