Hi,

Recently I had to change my PC monitor (CRT type) to a HP Pavilian mx50
due to a problem with the other monitor.

Note: I have AntiX 16.2 installed on a desktop PC's HD.

The resolution is not as high as the other monitor!! I could NOT find
where to change (SIMPLE on a Windows PC) the resolution!!! I looked
into all the places where you can make adjustments to the System & Hardware.

Anyone know how to increase the resolution from 800 X 600 to a higher
resolution?

Thank You in advance, John\

It depends on your desktop environment. In KDE Plasma, it's in the
System Settings → Hardware → Display and Monitor. If you don't use
Plasma, use the configuration tool for the desktop environment you do
use. It should be similar.

Is that one still supported? Latest one is AntiX-19, which I think you
may think of upgrading to.

Which graphics card do you have?
example command: lshw -class display

Which graphics driver are you using?
example command: grep Loading /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep drivers

Which kind of port do you use from the graphics card to connect to the
monitor? VGA, DVI, ...

Which window manager do you use? Some may have features which allows you
to set the resolution like you can do in desktop environments like KDE.

By tradition you can set resolutions in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but
nowadays you seldom do that and allow Xorg to select the best resolution
as your graphics card/monitor combination can do based on the graphics
driver you use.
Nowadays it's more common to use /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/filename where you
create small files which are just partial xorg.conf files where you make
small adjustments to the default settings.
For example:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Keep in mind that the above is just an example and shouldn't be used as
it is, you need to adjust it to your X11 setup, and be prepared that you
may have to be able to remove the file in console mode if you happen to
screw things up.

More info, "CRT" is Cathode Ray Tube (old type of PC monitor for many
years). Both monitors, the one with a problem and the HP I used to replace
it, are CRT types. They plug into the standard VGA connector.

I told you when you asked in thread "FireFox V64 in AntiX 16.2 Display
Issue" about edid. You must verify what EDID information has your monitor.

Now that I know that it is a CRT, possibly old, it is possible that it
doesn't support EDID. In that case, you may have to write the
configuration file by hand, old style.

MORE INFO (from a Ham Radio friend with AntiX 17.3, I think)

"Go to Control Center and select 'Session' then select 'Adjust screen
resolution'. When the box opens, select 'Outputs'.  I had VGA, S-video, and
several others.  Select one and look for sub-menu 'resolutions'.  That should
get you there!"

PROCEDURE DID NOT "WORK"

I tried to change the resolution (AntiX 16.2) from 800 x 600 (selected) to
"1024 x 768" but it did NOT take effect!! I noticed that 1024 x 768 was now
selected (has the selected dot on left, but the MAIN screen display, right
side, showed "res: 800 x 600". Also above that is "rox-icewm".

Also, a reboot had no effect.

QUESTION:

After selecting the resolution to "1024 x 768", is there something more I
have to do to make it TAKE EFFECT (example in Windows, "Apply", "OK")?

Thank You in advance, John N3AOF

I doubt that icewm has that capability. There are several desktops in
Linux, and the control center of one may not work in a different desktop.

I insist. Please find out the EDID info as I told you days ago.

UPDATE (using AntiX 16.2):

From Ham friend, "click on 'Layout' and then 'Apply"". Now that took effect
and the screen resolution became hires!!

One more CHALLENGE (using "Screen Layout Editor"):

Via "Save As", the "Save Layout" window has a slot for a "Name".
Below is "Save in folder" (default "root" "screenlayout", and a list of
"Places", etc..

I tried a filename, "HIRES" which was saved, but when I rebooted PC,
the screen was back to low res.

How do I SAVE this setting so I do NOT have to go through this procedure
for hires every time I boot up this PC?

UPDATE (via more info from Ham friend):

I clicked on Control Center, "Desktop", "Edit IceWM Settings" (there are
others) , clicked on Startup tab, and added this line: "xrandr -s 1024x768"
and pressed the Enter key.

Then I clicked on "File", upper left corner, and clicked on "Save".

I rebooted the computer and BY GOLLY it worked!!!!

Reboot? Sounds so microsoft windows, logout/login sounds more than
enough in this case IMHO.
