Hi there. I've been thinking about trying Linux, but I have a
question.
Can Linux read/write dos formatted disks, or do I have to play around
some? I was considering getting a notebook for Linux, and would need
to tranfser files from my windows pc.

Thanks

Yes it can.

As for the reverse direction, there is a rather lame Windows utility
to read (but not write) Linux's ext2 file system.

Yep linux reads loads of file formats, including msdos. But not the
other way around. Windows can't read linux format disks.
