I was able to get a GeForce 2 system up and running with RH 8.0 last night.
Here's what I did:

- Downloaded the NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123.src.rpm and
NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-3123.i386.rpm from nVidia's site. (Note that the
NVIDIA_kernel is the *src* rpm file.)

- Did an 'rpmbuild --rebuild NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123.src.rpm' to create
drivers for the RH 8.0 kernel. (That'll create the binary RPM in
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123.i386.rpm.)

- Installed this new NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123.i386.rpm and the
NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-3123.i386.rpm.

- Edited the /etc/X11/XF86Config file:

- Removed the Load "dri" line.
- Changed the Driver line from "nv" to "nvidia"

Worked for me! :-)

Hi Brett.

I ran into the exact same problem that Carina did with my GeForce3. I
tried to rebuild the kernel from the source file, but the rebuild
failed (unfortunately I am at the office so I can't post the error
message). I still find it amazing that after 3 releases of RedHat
(7.2, 7.3 and 8.0), there is still not built-in support for many
GeForce cards. Nvidia is pretty good about posting updates so
hopefully we will have a new version of the drivers soon.

I don't think you will see copyrighted stuff in the free RedHat, regadles of
version. So you have to wait until nVidia changes the licence for the driver.

I don't think there will be any big development on the free nv-driver, as we
have the nVidia-driver.

Did you install the kernel source before you tried to compile the
NVIDIA_kernel?? :) For that could cause big problems.

If you and/or Carina could post the errors from the SRPM rebuild when you
get home tonight, I'd be interested in seeing what's dying. It's just
source, so in theory if it builds on one machine w/o problems it should be
able to build anywhere. (But theory vs reality...well, you know how it
goes. :-)

Judging from the Bugzilla entries, Red Hat's been putting some effort into
getting nVidia cards working correctly with the XFree86 code. It might be
worth your while to submit a bug report. (And the first request that the
Red Hat folks will make if you submit this as a bug is to attach your
XF86Config and /var/log/XFree86.0.log files, so you might want to just
include those from the start.)

Anyways, think about doing a bug submission. It might be something simple
to fix, like a missing hardware identifier. And if they don't have your
card in their test lab, well, they won't realize that X isn't working
correctly with that model. (At least not until someone actually tells
them. :-)

True, nVidia's been good about releasing binary RPMs for a lot of releases
and kernels. Maybe they're still trying to get through to a mirror so they
can download RH 8.0. :-)

Cheers!

Juls-

I don't think RedHat can distribute non-GPLed code. The NVidia
drivers, AFAIK, are not open source.

Aho -- thank you! In my excitment to get 8.0 running, I completely
forgot to install the kernel source. Once I did that, the rpmbuild
created a working Nvidia binary. Thank you!

What I really found interesting about the 8.0 install process is that:

1) The 8.0 graphical install does not work with my Hercules GeForce3
-- I had to use the text install. Interestingly enough, the graphic
install worked in 7.3 (even though x would not run without the nvidia
drivers).

2) The install process does identify a GeForce3 (Generic) as being
installed.

Seems the problem lies more with XFree86 than with Linux not
recognizing my hardware.

I'm glad that it solved for you :)

It's odd, but things like that happens when software is updated.

Yes, the nv driver development more or less stopped after the release of gf2,
it's kind of sad as it make things more difficult for those with newer nvidia
cards. But we have to be happy that we have a driver, which ain't the case if
we would had XiG instead of XF86.
Lets hope that nVidia could loosen their lisence, so the nVidia driver could
be included into a normal Linux distro.
