I have a question for those who are reading this. First, I am only a
minor, but I can definitely handle the online community like any other
adult. "Is it illegal for me to at least see any art on any webpage,
if it says that minors must leave?"
and "Should I just keep my furriness a secret from my family?"
Ok, here goes...
Furvey 2.64
===========
Main purposes of the Furvey:
==== ======== == === ======
* Information. The Furvey was originally created to collect personal
data
from furry lifestylers. This information will be made available online
via
a web-based database, and will allow furries to request statistics and
search for like-minded furs.
* Delurking. The Furvey can be used to delurk on alt.lifestyle.furry, in
much the same way that werecards are used to delurk on
alt.horror.werewolves. Typically, a new furry posts a completed Furvey
to
the group, effectively introducing themselves to everyfur else, and also
causing many 'Hey... I'm like that, too!' remarks. It is _not_
compulsory to
delurk using the Furvey, although just about 99% of furs favour it ;)
* Self analysis. Some furs have found that completing the Furvey, in
private
and in their own time, has enabled them to discover aspects of
themselves
which they hadn't previously known of. Once completed, the answers can
be
posted to alt.lifestyle.furry for delurking or simply kept for future
reference.
* Discussions. Furries posting their Furveys to alt.lifestyle.furry
will hopefully inspire and encourage various threads of discussion.
Completing the Furvey
========== === ======
Feel free to write as much, or as little as you want for each
question. You
may decide to type concise sentences, or perhaps even your entire furry
history - it's entirely up to you. Of course, feel free to omit any
questions which you can't answer - either because you don't want to
(e.g.
the furry sexuality questions), or simply because the question isn't
really
applicable.
If you want to email your Furvey to me directly, then you'll find the
email address located at the very bottom of this file.

Administration: Many furries will post a revised Furvey to
alt.lifestyle.furry every few months or so, and I will quite
happily accept these for processing. However, a change of email
address or name can often confuse this poor foxy when it comes
to archiving the collected Furveys. So...
0) If this is your first Furvey posting, then please list below _all_ of
your current email address(es) and name(s).
If you are posting a revised copy of your Furvey, then please list

I think it was when I was about 14 or 15. I had loved to watch
cartoons, like Bugs Bunny and other animal associated cartoons. I also
liked watching animated Disney movies such as Robin Hood. I had also
loved animals and hated hunters. Not until this year, 1999, I didn't
think of it much. I also felt a little emotion about the cartoons as
if they were human. In the beginning of 1999 I had went with one of my
RL friends to a comic bookstore and I found an Havoc Inc. comic. I
thought the comic was cool yet new to me so I bought it. When I first
read it the concept of more realistic art or furries was new to me.
When I got the Internet, around the beginning of July 1999, I tried
search for my favorite furry characters and a FAQ about furridom. It
explained the basics to me and, after that, I ended up were I am now.

way?
It was basically an accident, but I did wonder why I felt like that.

lose a chance to make friends
33) What kind of furry interests/hobbies do you have?
I draw furries
34) Do you ever doubt how furry you are?
35) Are you ashamed/proud of being furry?
I am proud, but I am afraid that if my parents here about this I'll
lose everything

[i.e. your girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife. Animals don't count!]

I suppose that depends on the laws where you live, and whether or not
anyone decides to pursue prosecution. (IANAL though, so don't pay too
much attention to my opinion.)

That depends a lot on your parents, and it depends a lot on you.

:) Yes, exactly. I think if this was a furry-only world, this might be
alt.lifestyle.human, and we'd all be wishing we had no fur nor scales
nor tails nor nothin'. ;)
Or, like I read somewhere, we might still feel as animals, just not as
the ones we'd happen to be. :|

Actually I understand quite a lot of Christians believe in the Big Bang.
(Not me, personally, and apparently not your parents either.)

In _my_ day.. (all of.. two years ago..) they only gave us 2MB! And
those were the *big* places! None of this 10MB/25MB/unlimMB without
puttin' up cash beforehand! And we had to walk uphill both ways through

AIEEEEEEEEE!!!
Urm, with that out of my system...
Are you aware that a reasonably sized image rarely breaks the 70Kb
mark? I sort of have this ongoing crusade against websites with 500Kb
images on them. That's a lot of bandwidth, you know.
Here's a few space-saving tips that may allow you to adjust your images
for reasonable viewing:
-If it's bigger than the screen, it's too big
-If it's animated, check the file size
-If it takes up more than half the screen, consider reducing it further
-JPEG images have an adjustable compression rate
-JPEG images are good for photorealism
-GIF images are good for low-colour line art
-Bitmaps are good for eating hard disks
-Use tiled backgrounds, not one huge file
(side note: use a bland background, or text won't show up)
-Just when you think it's small enough, see if it looks okay smaller
If you go by these, and reduce file sizes, I'd be surprised if you
manage to break 1.5 Megs, let alone 10.

Depends on your family, but ordinarily, yes.

Playing the piano is no small talent, in my book. I have enough trouble

IRL, we're overrated. ;)

Ow! There's more quackery on the internet than you can shake a stick at
(II should know, I've tried... and that's a LOTTA stick shakin', I tell you
what), so I would advise extreme caution where such things are concerned.
I don't trust most headshrinkers on principle... and I'd NEVER trust one I

No, just certain people.

That's good, because it's a logical impossibility. As a practical
exercise, try proving there's no Tooth Fairy and see how far you get.
Me, I believe what I see.

Actually, we're not QUITE as open-minded as you might think. At least, I'm
not. But I like to think that something resembling enlightenment can come
about through an exchange of ideas.

Hi and welcome to Homestead! I know how you feel, I joined up here for
the exact same reason. Most everyfur here is pretty nice, and I'm sure
you'll make furiends fast.

I know where you're coming from here too. It's not being 18 that I think
people should worry about, but if someone is mature enough to handle
that kind of stuff. I know a lot of 18+ people who act like hrony 13
year olds, but their of "leagal age" so what ya gonna do?
I've done a bit of research on your question and the basic rules seem to
be that so long as you don't look at the actual erotic art/story or
whatever, then your ok. But you'd have to check the local laws.
> and "Should I just keep my furriness a secret from my family?"
It's hard to live a double life so if your family can handel it, it's
not a bad idea to let them know about it. If you think they'll just flip
out, then wait until you move out. :)

Me too! It's gotten a little esier for me since I joined ALF, I hope
it'll help you too.

*Sad nod* Lots of people just don't understand. It's sad really.

I can understand this too. My dad was rasied Catholic and is now a very
devote Christian. I'm also a devote Christian (got to belive there's
more to this world than the sum of its parts), but if my dad knew about
Furry, I'm sure he'd think I was sacreligious or something.

Well erotic and furriness do not nessessarily go together. We get enough
of that problem so let's keep things neat, tidy and separate. Tell your

I think it really depends on the laws in your state, but I don't think
that's ever stopped any under-aged teen from trying to find anything on
the net. They really have no way of checking your age when you click
on the links. Unless the site in question gets raided, and access logs
are checked, and they match up the IP address to the user...tho, I
don't think that'll happen...
> and "Should I just keep my furriness a secret from my family?"
Well, you're 16, almost an adult but not quite. I say keep it from
your family as long as you're living under the same roof. Feel out
your family's feelings. How tolerant are they? I wonder how much of
this advice would be the same for young homosexuals who wish to "come
out".

There really is no reason for the Big Bang to negate a belief in a god

"only"? :) With a decent scanner and a decent graphics program you can
pare down drawings from half a meg (or whatever) to around 70k. Even
with quite a lot of pics, you can still keep your website under 5 megs.
My personal homepage, which has a number of pics of my plushies is only
allowed 5 megs, and I only used up under 2...

Acutally, theoretical physics is approaching the answer to this question, in

If it's animated, consider making it an MPEG/AVI/FLI, or at the very least,
downloadable via a link. Embedding an animated GIF onto a webpage takes ages
to load and can chew on processing power...
>-JPEG images have an adjustable compression rate

Don't use JPEGs on images with sharp contrasts, 'cos it will add an ugly
multicolour fuzz around it.
GIFs also has variable compression rates, make sure that the GIF
compression takes into consideration the number of colours in it. For
example: raw bitmap (144,056 bytes) compresses down to 22,221 bytes with 8
bit compression, and 18,580 bytes with 4 bit compression. Remember that this
is a _lossless_ method.

Which is more than can be said for some "adults".

You can view the non-erotic stuff...
I'm not sure of the vagaries of erotic-art/porn law, i.e. whether there's
one, common age-limit across the US, or whether it varies according to
state, or whether it's up to the artist to decide.
>and "Should I just keep my furriness a secret from my family?"
S'up to you. Let the initial 'discovering furridom' euphoria / excitement /
shock / whatever feelings die down, and then think about it.
Do you want to tell them because you think they should know, or because you
just want to tell someone (in real life) about it? I would argue that if
you don't want to tell them then that's your right and you should keep it a
secret from them, that is, it is better to treat them like mushrooms (keep
'em in the dark and feed them lots of shit) than to tell them all and
endanger your relationship with them.
>109) Do you enjoy casual sex with furries/non furries?

FWIW, In the UK, being 16 would mean that you are still a 'minor' with
regards to homosexual contact, but not for heterosexual contact.

And there's probably nothing more annoying than having to slooooooowly
load the long GIF animation, only to notice it's not looped, and when
you hit reload, it will load again...

Actually, it's not the compression rate, it's the color depth of the
image.
Also try to make the image color map "browser friendly" (ie, use
only Netscape color palette). That will make sure the image will
actually try to look good on most of the browsers, even on low color
depth screens (or something like that) One really excellent way to
make sure of that is to get a nicely arranged palette from
<http://www.visibone.com/> (Tigert had a better version of the
Visibone palette for GIMP, I think).

It's also the complexity of the image. A drawing that was designed with a
256-color pallette in mind will compress into a much smaller GIF than one
reduced (dithered) from a 24-bit color image.
And I don't think the world is ready for PNG. I remember a lot of people
couldn't use it, last time I tried to send out a file in that format.
Plus, it takes forever for a slower computer to open a PNG file.
I'm designing a web site to be viewed in 800 x 600, but with some
considerations so that it won't look too lost in higher-resolution
screens. In deference to my pet peeves, it has no Java, no animated GIFs,
and NEVER EVER any autoplay music! Fast downloading, that's my main goal.
I've got one image I love, but I have to face the fact that 94k is
probably just too big.

Illegal: I don't know the actual laws in this matter, but it's possible--I'd
even say likely. And that's whether you'd be inviting trouble for *yourself*,
because:
Irresponsible: Yes. Whoever posted that message is trying to protect herself

That's a personal judgment call for everyone. I couldn't begin to guess
without being well-acquainted with both you and your family. All I can say is,
if you think it'll cause trouble, then it's best to keep your muzzle shut. And
I'd probably wait till I was out of their house, even if I was fairly sure

FIVE hundred?!? I don't think I've ever dealt with a screen that small.
(Maybe the original Mac screen?) Your operating system limits your
screen size? This is something I hadn't heard before. What's your default
height?
I don't mean to be a technology snob, but I've run at least 1024x768 for
7 years, even when I had a video card with only half a meg of RAM.
I figured I'd be relegating a small number of people to sideways scrolling
by aiming for 800 and not 640, but... 500?
*scales Netscape window down to 500 pixels wide*
I doona think I can do it, Captain.

Actually...
I rather like the idea of Windowing System.
Repeat after me: *windowing system*.
When I got this machine, I wondered the great size of its screen - I
could open multiple 640x480 browser windows, whee! These days, I use
1152x900x16bit resolution in X11, and I keep my browser windows at
about 620x400 or so.
Why, you might ask? Some points need to be brought to our attention:
- 1152 pixel window + 12 point font that's used on many websites =
quite long lines! I don't feel like changing the point sizes - then
the images would look ridiculously small. The old typographical
rule dictates that the shorter the lines are, the easier they are
to read - and I fully agree after some empiric tests...
- It's a windowing system. The beauty of the big screen is that I
don't need to stare at one big window. It's much funnier to have
several windows open. For example, when I read Slashdot, I keep one
window with the main page open, and <middle-click> in Netscape
brings me another window with an article. One window keeps the
image list in Velar, another is to show pictures. etc, etc...
Power using! Better navigation!

Also remember that WebTVs can be quite narrow, and people don't always want
their web-browser to be opened full-screen.

No, just the default (I think).

The screen is 1280 x 1024 and has been for 10 years, but Netscape
defaults to 500 x 650, just as the Cern Mozaic code did before it.
Its is IMO a good choice as it leaves plenty of space for other
windows (the stuff your supposed to be doing), and all the online
html documentation is prepared with this in mind.

Well... The main difficulty (for me) with a webpage 800 pixels wide is
that even with an 800x600 screen (what I'm running at... any higher and
I have to lose color) I still have a Windows toolbar along the side of
my screen. It's only two small-sized icons wide, but it does
sufficiently shrink my browser space so that pages designed for 800
widths leave me hitting the left and right buttons repeatedly to get
bits of text.
The best policy, unless you *know* what your audience is using (say on a
local intranet) is not to bind webpages to a width at all.
Excepting full-size images, my page [quiet plug] should be all right
really really thin. In Netscape. (The bells and whistles for
CSS-compliant browsers might add a bit of width.)
*Muke checks*
Yeah, mostly, except for lines that like to format themselves; floating
